UNIVERSITY HOSPITALS CASE MEDICAL CENTER MARCH 20, 2015 Finally Friday Resident Newsletter UH Department of Internal Medicine Residency Program SMAK Corner Friendly Reminders 1. For any call-offs, please page the ambulatory chief at 31529. We are not always available immediately by phone or email, but we ALWAYS have the pager. 2. Remember to complete the Spring is almost here!!! It makes its official arrival on the evening of Friday, March 20th. And after a very long Ohio winter some of the first signs of spring are starting to appear: the days are getting longer, the weather is warming up (at least a little bit), and much of the February snow has melted. But one of the surest signs that spring is just around the corner is the annual return of baseball! Spring training is already underway, and Opening Day is now just about 2 weeks away. The Cleveland Indians will start their season with a series of games in Texas against the Houston Astros from April 6-8th. They will then return to Cleveland for their home opener on Friday, April 10th against the Detroit Tigers. Going to an Indians game can be a fun way to get outdoors into the spring sunshine, enjoy a hotdog and a beer, and take in a professional sporting event relatively inexpensively. Tickets are usually fairly easy to obtain even on the day of game. My suggestion: take some friends and sit in the bleacher section (where tickets are usually $10 each); the view is great and the price is cheap! For more information about tickets please visit indians.mlb.com. - Jason Tuckerman PAGE 1 Medication Reconciliations at the time of admission. 3. Discharge Summaries on the day of discharge as always. Interns, residents, and attendings are welcome to complete! 4. Please remember to fill out our Elective Tracking form. Resident of the Week Award Residents of the week are: Jahnavi Gollamudi and Elise Brady One of the VA attending said regarding a patient on a surgical service: “I would like to relate to you the incredible help I received from your residents. They came to the rapid response and appeared at the bedside. Although they had every reason to exit the scene since a surgery-department attending was already there, they in-fact stayed, evaluated the patient, reviewed the chart, determined that this could be a CVA, rapidly ordered a CT scan and activated the VA-UH stroke protocol. They stayed with the patient until transport came for the move to UH. Their care was potentially life-saving for him. I can’t thank them enough for providing such great care.” Thank you for your hard work! Please remember to submit your nominations for resident of the week to [email protected]. 6th Annual Department of Medicine Research Day Our annual research day will be Friday, May 15th from 12-3:30 PM. All PGY3s are required to present a poster on their quality projects. Also for those that have done research electives this year you will also need to present your work. See you all then! Magnetic resonance venography The diagnostic test of choice for diagnosing dural sinus venous thrombosis is magnetic resonance venography. Need an idea for a project or a research mentor? NEJM Image Challenge Answer: C. Herpes zoster The vesicular eruptions along the V3 trigeminal dermatome, including the left side of the tongue and mandible, are most consistent with a diagnosis of herpes zoster infection. The patient was prescribed a 2-week course of oral valacyclovir.
