European Multi Lake Survey Summer 2015 CyanoCOST/ NETLAKE
European Multi Lake Survey Summer 2015 CyanoCOST/ NETLAKE Training School May 2015 Organization: Evanthia Mantzouki, Bastiaan Ibelings Participants: CyanoCOST & NETLAKE Sevilla, CYANOCOST 19/02/2015 Aims of European Multi Lake Survey 1. Quantify the relative role of nutrients (N vs. P) and temperature as drivers of cyanoblooms (mode and type interaction) 2. Assess the function of trophic state, basin type, functional traits of dominant taxa 3. Risk analysis , toxin profiles of all lakes 27 Countries (54% Inclusiveness) 55 Participants ≈ 100s lakes PROTOCOLS • EPA – National Lakes Assessment 2012 • GLEON – TTG Spring Blitz 2013 LAKE SELECTION (NLA Criteria) ≥ 1 ha in total surface area ≥ 1000 square meters of open water ≥ 1 meter in depth • Not saline (due to salt water intrusion or tidal influence) • Not used for aquaculture # Site ID Lake Name Country/ Region Stratification Regime Trophic State Latitude Climate Lake Size Sediment Type Contact Meteorological data (nearest station) Wind speed Air Temperature (°C) Precipitation (daily mm per year) 2. Scum Chlorophyll a Toxins Phytoplankton 1. Historical or Deepest Point T, C profiles Chl fluorescence / Secchi depth DO, pH, PAR P, N Phytoplankton (microscopy, flowcytometry) Micro-, Mesozooplankton Microbes, community composition (preserve for future) Toxins Field Scenario 1. Prepare equipment and supplies for sampling. Calibrate sensors and multi probe meter 2. Lake sampling (Sampling day chosen by each participant, capturing the seasonal maximum) Meteorological data: Wind speed, air temperature and precipitation Profiles of temperature, Chl Fluorescence, DO and pH in Index site Secchi depth 3. Determine depth of sampling (3 depths) Sampling at 3 discreet depths: Chlorophyll a, nutrients, phytoplankton, zooplankton, microbes- community composition, toxins 4. Inspect periphery and spot Scum Sampling surface: Chlorophyll a, phytoplankton, toxins 5. Ensure all samples are labelled and dated correctly 6. Sample preparation 7. Sample analysis 8.
