Career Presentations Held at Vienna Elementary School
On April 9, 2015, Vienna Elementary School’s 3rd, 4th, and 5th graders were able to listen to career
presentations during College and Career Readiness Day. The students were fortunate to hear speakers from a
variety of professions. The students were able to hear what the career fair participants did for a living and how
they arrived at that particular career choice. Some participants gave demonstrations on what their job entailed.
Others showed a PowerPoint with pictures of what their training and jobs looked like. Mr. Richard Potter, the
College and Career Readiness Transition Specialist for Dorchester County Public Schools, talked with the
students about preparing for college. Mr. Ronald Briggs, Attorney at Law for the Law Office of Ronald L.
Briggs, spoke with students about the schooling and daily requirements for being a lawyer. Mrs. Aubrey
Vincent, Sales Representative from Lindy’s Seafood, informed students about the seafood industry and sales.
She finished off her presentation by showing the students how to pick a Maryland blue crab. Mr. Eric
Masaracchia, from Riverside Retrievers and Hunting Guide for Sean Mann Outdoors, did a dog training
presentation to show how they train dogs for hunting. Mr. Shane Satterfield, Flight Attendant for Southwest
Airlines, shared the training and testing involved in becoming a flight attendant. Finally, Ms. Debbie
Wheddleton, Mr. Eric Hodges, and Ms. Mandi Jones, Paramedics and EMTs for Dorchester County
Emergency Services, showed a variety of tools and explained the training involved in becoming a paramedic
and/or EMT. All presenters allowed for a questions and answer session.
The students and staff of Vienna Elementary School truly appreciated and enjoyed all of the presenters
that participated in College and Career Readiness Day. Our goal was to provide all students with an opportunity
to learn about possible career and educational experiences. We want to expose students to career
opportunities and establish an early connection between academics and career exploration for our learners.
