RATIONALE:
To clarify the Formula Vee Technical Regulations
ACTION:
To amend the Formula Vee Technical Regulations as follows:
PREAMBLE
…
For Formula Vee’s Log Booked after July 2014; in addition to being issued with a
CAMS log book, to become eligible for competition, the a Formula Vee shall must be
issued with a Certificate of Compliance from a State Formula Vee Association.
…
2.6 ENGINE:
…
(v) Crankshaft:
...
• The crankshaft may be ground and the case may be machined to accommodate
the use of the standard VW oversize/undersize crankshaft bearings, provided
the crankshaft location is not changed. It may also be machined to permit
installation of camshaft bearings.
• Lightening of the crankshaft is permitted. Metal removed shall must be confined
to the circumference surface of the crankshaft webs.
…
(vii) Flywheel and clutch assembly:
• For 1200cc engines machining of all flywheel surfaces is permitted. The
flywheel shallmust comply with the minimum weight specified in art. 3, “Weights
and Dimensions”. The use of any flywheel, as used on a Type1 or Type 3 VW
originally fitted with a six volt or 12 volt electrical system, is permitted:
• For 1600cc engines lightening of the flywheel is permitted by machining of the
clutch plate and pressure plate contact surfaces and the back face only. The
lightened flywheel shall respect the dimensions in the diagram below:
(ix) Camshaft followers:
Machining of the camshaft contact face only of the camshaft followers is
permitted. Modified contact face must not be concave. Camshaft followers may
have a single centralised lubrication hole of a maximum 1mm diameter as
supplied by the manufacturer.
…
(x) Cylinders, Pistons, Rings and Gudgeon Pins:
• Removal of metal from pistons and gudgeon pins for balancing purposes is
permitted. Metal removal must be confined to the inner surfaces of the piston so
that the skirt perimeter is not modified in any way;
• For 1200cc engines each piston and gudgeon pin may be lightened but shall
comply with the minimum weight specified in article 3, “Weights and
Dimensions”. Metal removal shall be confined to the inner surfaces of the
piston only. that the skirt perimeter is not modified in any way. A piston ring
functioning in the normal manner shall be fitted in each groove of the piston.
Each piston and barrel shall comply with the requirements of “Non Genuine
Parts”, except that:
(a) The minimum width of the top and second ring groove shall be 2.00mm.
(b) The minimum width of the oil ring groove shall be 4.00mm.
(c) The minimum distance from the top of the gudgeon pin bore to the face of
the piston shall be 27.90mm.
• For 1600cc engines pistons and gudgeon pins may be lightened. Pistons shall
be cast aluminium alloy with a steel insert and the profile of the bottom of the
piston skirt shall be as manufactured. Piston and gudgeon pin shall comply with
the minimum weight and dimensions specified in art. 3, “Weights and
Dimensions”. A piston ring, functioning in the normal manner, shall be fitted in
each groove of the piston. Each piston gudgeon pin circlip can be replaced by a
Teflon button. Each Piston shall meet the requirements of “Non Genuine
Parts” except that they do not require the cast in steel plate.
• Machining the spigot faces of barrels to obtain deck height is permitted.
…
(xii) Valve Train:
For 1600 and 1200 engines Valves shallmust conform with Articles 1.1, 3 and 4
with the exception that they may be manufactured from any ferrous material
…
2.7 ENGINE ANCILLARIES:
…
(i) Carburettor:
For 1200cc engines:
…..
(f) The throttle shaft is not to be modified. The minimum thickness of the
throttle shaft is 4.7mm.
…
(iii) Inlet Manifold:
…
(b) The aircleaner shall have a horizontal interior surface located no higher than
10mm above the uppermost edge of the carburettor air inlet. The interior of the air
cleaner, to a minimum diameter of 70mm and maximum of 150mm centred on the
carburettor air inlet and to a minimum height of 40mm and maximum of 80mm
above the horizontal surface, shall be free space. The use of any aircleaner which is
less than the specified envelope is permitted. The aircleaner shall have a horizontal
interior surface located at the uppermost edge of the carburettor air inlet.
…
(vi) Cooling System:
…
(c) Modification of the fan housing is permitted in order to provide for an airtight
passage for any member of the safety cage structure and an orifice (to the specified
dimensions) for external oil cooler hoses. Each bracket is permitted to be fixed to the
fan housing so long as its attachment forms an airtight seal.
(d) It is permitted to attach brackets directly to the fan housing provided that
the bracket attachment forms an airtight seal.
…
(vii) Distributor:
(a) The distributor is free provided it retains the original drive and location and
mechanical high tension current distribution. Each standard Bosch or replica point
may be replaced with an electronic replacement point set ignition module. The
replacement set ignition module shall be installed totally within the distributor
without requiring any modification to the distributor. When a replacement point
ignition module is installed it shall provide a fixed dwell angle at all engine RPM.
A list of part numbers currently approved by the FVAA National Technical
Committee will be available on the FVAA website.
(b) The advance curve is free
2.8 TRANSMISSION:
…
(a) For 1200 engines the use of any standard VW Type 1, 2 or 3 component which
can be fitted without modification to itself or any other component is permitted.
Any of the following standard VW gear ratios is permitted:
2.9 CHASSIS AND SAFETY CAGE STRUCTURES:
…
(b) Configuration:
…
(vi) The main roll bar shall be located immediately behind the cockpit with the plane
of the main hoop within +/- 10° of perpendicular to the longitudinal centreline of the
vehicle. With the driver seated in the normal position the hoop shall:
