PARTICIPATION REQUIREMENTS
Perfect for individuals, couples, and families with teenagers,
this program will help participants explore their interests in
community outreach and civic engagement. All participants
must be 15 years of age or older, and program space is
limited. All participants must be of good health and capable
of lifting at least 10 pounds.
LOCATION
New Orleans is one of the world’s most fascinating,
historic cities in the United States. La Nouvelle-Orléans
(New Orleans) was founded May 7, 1718, by the French
Mississippi Company, and was acquired from the French
by Thomas Jefferson in the Louisiana Purchase in 1803.
Steeped in a history of influences from Europe, the
Caribbean, Africa and beyond, it is home to a genuinely
unique melting pot of culture, food, and music. It is known
for its architecture, especially its French Quarter, its music
and jazz festivals, and its food. A destination for tourists
from around the world, it is one of the top ten most visited
cities in the United States.
ACCOMMODATIONS
The Sheraton New Orleans Hotel (www.sheratonneworleans.
com) is located in the heart of the city on the most celebrated
parade routes in the world. It is just steps from Royal Street,
the French Market in the French Quarter, and Jackson Square.
The entire hotel was recently renovated and serves at the
official hotel of the New Orleans Jazz Fest. Premium rooms
are available with club access that includes 24/7 lounge
access, breakfast service daily, hors d’oeuvres in the evening,
and a business center with printers, computer stations, and
amazing floor to ceiling views of New Orleans.
FITNESS REQUIREMENTS
The physical demands of this program are moderate. The
most significant challenges will be encountered during the
service project work which might include light to heavy
construction. As it is late spring in New Orleans, it is
also quite likely to be very warm and humid. There will be
exposure to the sun, wind, and heat. However, shade and
refreshments will always be available during the program.
FEES
The program is $1,299 for each person in a double
occupancy room. There is a $300 additional fee for single
accommodations and premium level rooms which include
breakfast, club access, cityscape views, and other amenities
are available for an additional $500 per room. The program
fee includes accommodations at the Sheraton New Orleans
on Canal Street from Thursday evening, April 30 through
Sunday morning, May 3, 2015. The program also includes
tickets to one evening of the Jazz Fest with Sheraton tent
access, transportation to all program-related activities, all
lectures and receptions, lunch on Friday and Saturday, dinner
on Saturday evening, refreshments at the Jazz Fest and
service projects, and a museum tour on Sunday morning.

PROGRAM FACULTY
Ashley Brown Burns
MA’10, PhD’13 is an
Assistant Professor in the
Political Science department
at Amherst College. She has
led DukeEngage New Orleans
for over seven years and is
currently Program Director. Dr.
Burns has a PhD and MA from
the Duke University Sanford
School of Public Policy. She completed her BA in Political
Economy at Williams College. Her research examines
relationships of political and economic equity, social
stratification, and public policy. Dr. Burns’ most recent
manuscript, “Stuck on the American Dream,” is focused on
housing policy, gentrification, and identity politics. She is
also developing projects that address diversity policies in
institutions, disaster response after Hurricane Katrina, and
the intergenerational transmission of poverty. At Amherst
College, Dr. Burns teaches with an interdisciplinary lens on
issues of racial and class stratification, social justice, and
domestic welfare policies. Her courses cover American
politics, housing, ethics, and public policy.
