SHORT CURRICULUM VITAE Professor Dr. Hans-Ulrich Wittchen Director Institute of Clinical Psychology and Psychotherapy & Center of Clinical Epidemiology and Longitudinal Studies (CELOS) Technische Universität Dresden, Germany Tel.: +49/(0)351 463 36983 Fax: +49/(0)351 463 36984 E-mail: [email protected] Professor Hans-Ulrich Wittchen is Chairman (since 2000) of the Institute of Clinical Psychology and Psychotherapy and the Center of Clinical Epidemiology and Longitudinal Studies (CELOS) at the Technische Universitaet Dresden, Germany, and Honorary Professor at the Ludwig-Maximilians-University in Munich (since 1990). Trained in medicine and psychology at the University of Vienna, Austria, he received his PhD in Clinical Psychology in 1975. Subsequently he carried out post-doctoral clinical research in anxiety, depressive and substance use disorders at the Anton Proksch and Ludwig Boltzmann Institute of Addiction Research (Vienna, Austria), the Central Institute of Mental Health (Mannheim, Germany) and the Max Planck Institute of Psychiatry in Munich, where he worked as Head of the Evaluation and Clinical Epidemiology Unit (1980–1990) and Director (1990–2000) of the Clinical Psychology and Epidemiology Department. From 1984–1989 he was Professor of Clinical Psychology and Psychotherapy at the University of Mannheim (tenure). Dr. Wittchen has been principal investigator of several national and international large-scale clinical epidemiological and family genetic studies on the prevalence of risk factors, course and outcomes of mental and substance use disorders, such as the 10-years Early Developmental Stages of Psychopathology (EDSP) and the German National Health Interview and Examination Survey. Internationally, he serves as consultant and investigator of several major studies, such as the US National Comorbidity Survey (NCS), the World Mental Health Survey, the Burden of Disease Project as well as several international studies of the World Health Organization (WHO). His research covers clinical and prospective-longitudinal epidemiological aspects, focusing on the etiological and pathogenic pathways of mental disorders, with a particular interest in symptom progression models of anxiety, depression and substance use disorders as well as treatment and translational research with emphasis on cognitive-behavioral interventions as well as long-term management strategies. Professor Wittchen received several awards and honors such as the Medvantis Research Award 2005. He serves as member of the Executive Committee and secretary of the Page 1 of 2 European College of Neuropsychopharmacology (ECNP) since 2005, and is member of several Advisory and Steering Committees (e.g. Europenqa Brain Council). Professor Wittchen has published more than 450 peer review articles and ranks among the top 100 most highly cited researchers in Psychology/Psychiatry (ISIhighlycited.com). He is author and co-author of several books and diagnostic instruments and has also been author of a series of patients self-help book on mental and substance use disorders. He is editor, or on the editorial board of several peer review journals, including International Journal of Methods in Psychiatric Research, Psychological Medicine, Addiction, Drug and Alcohol Dependence, Behavioral Psychotherapy and Diagnostika.
