Land of Oak & Iron Scheme Overview Land of Oak & Iron –Full Scheme Outline Project Activities Yr 20162020 Coordinator Derwent Discoveries – Identifying, recording and discovering heritage. Geology and Geomorphology - to map record and interpret the most significant geological sites in the area. Training volunteer wildlife surveyors - to survey and record species in the area including some of conservation concern. Whinfield Coke Ovens - repair, conserve and interpret the remains of the Beehive Coke Ovens which are a Scheduled Ancient Monument and turning them into an asset. Derwentcote Steel Furnace - the earliest and most complete steel-making furnace in Britain. Conserve and enhance the site and turning it into a vibrant visitor attraction. Allensford Blast Furnace - a Grade II Listed Building and Scheduled Ancient Monument in need of conservation and interpretation. Crowley’s Dam - conservation of this relic from Winlaton Mill ironworks which is an internationally significant industrial heritage site. 1-4 Durham Wildlife Trust 1-4 Durham Wildlife Trust 1 Tyne & Wear Building Preservation Trust 1-4 Fish Pass - at Lintzford weir to improve water quality and habitats. 1 River Restoration - pollution reduction, river crafts, surveying and educational work. Woodland Improvement - enhancement, restoration and expansion of native woodland to maximise environmental value and ensure long term viability. With major schemes at Derwent Head, Prudhoe and Gateshead’s Derwent Valley. Wetland enhancement - a wetland Local Wildlife Site at Shibdon Meadow which has significant ecological value and amenity potential will be restored and enhanced. Community Archaeology - to research and record archaeological evidence of the extraction of raw materials, innovation in bulk transport and heavy engineering that developed in the area. Outdoor education - about the landscape and how it shaped then has been shaped by industrial development at locations including Chopwell Woods, Derwenthead, Thornley Woods, Milkwellburn and Prudhoe. Industrial Heritage – learning opportunities about coal and lead mining, iron and steel making, waggonways, railways and water mill industries. Rapper Dancing – learning about the area’s cultural heritage through Rapper Dancing. 1-4 English Heritage / Tyne & Wear Building Preservation Trust Tyne & Wear Building Preservation Trust Gateshead Council / Sunniside & District History Society Tyne Rivers Trust / Environment Agency Tyne Rivers Trust Young people skills & training - formal training in areas such as woodland management, heritage crafts, construction, tourism, customer services and Ruins to Rarities – Restoration of the four remaining industrial heritage features in the area. Improving the Landscape - River habitat restoration Improving the Landscape – Woodland habitat restoration to return to native state Improving the Landscape – Wetland habitat restoration Community Archaeology – Exploring and learning about heritage Valley Rich with Oaks – Educational activity for children, and families. A choice of outdoor or industrial education will be offered to each school in the area followed by a living histories project. Community Grants Access For All –to provide better access around the area. Access For All - Creative Interpretation of the natural, industrial and cultural heritage to promote and widen engagement. A Place to Showcase –Specific centres to present and promote the heritage of the area One Derwent - Marketing, Promotions, Communications product development and a sustainability strategy Scheme Overview Activities business skills. Volunteer skills programme - developing the skills required to manage and sustain the impact of the project in the long term. Events and activities - to engage communities within and outside of the area encouraging participation in activities and providing opportunities to become more involved in other projects of interest. Providing resource and expertise - to support local existing and new groups to interact with and benefit from the project. Bike ability - training for children and adults to build confidence and skills Business engagement - to support green travel plans / networks and reduce environmental impacts. Small Grant Scheme - for community based projects that enhance the overall scheme. Winlaton Mill Heritage Centre - to promote the area, a hub for Oak & Iron activities and signpost people throughout the area. Satellite Centres - signposting, promotion and heritage exhibitions. At Consett and Prudhoe. Land of Oak & Iron website - development & maintenance Products and merchandise - guidebook, calendar, T-shirts etc. Videos/ photography - to showcase the area.
