Dear District One Membership,
I hope everyone is enjoying the warmer weather we are finally having in our region. All I can say is that it is
about time!!
I want to take this opportunity again to ask the each of you make every effort to attend your upcoming State
Association meetings over the next few months. They all have great programs plans and I am planning to
personally attend the ATOM/RI meeting later this month and then the Northern New England Conference in early
June. I apologize to the CATA for not being able to get down to Connecticut this spring but promise to be in
attendance at your next meeting.
I recently had the opportunity to attend two very special events that directly involved the membership in New
Hampshire. First, Linda Levy from Plymouth State University invited me to attend and speak at the recent NHATA
student symposium. It was both an honor and treat for me to spend the day with these student AT’s from our
programs in NH. These “kids” are smart, articulate and passionate about athletic training. I found the student
presentations that were given both thoughtful and informative. I enjoyed their thoughtful questions to me about
our profession both past and present.
The second event I had the honor to attend this past week was the annual Korey Stringer Institute, Preventing
Sudden Death in Sport, awards event at the NFL headquarters in NYC. Our very own Erik Swartz from UNH was
awarded the KSI Lifesaving Research Award for his outstanding work in the prevention and care of head and neck
injuries in football. Doug Casa and his outstanding colleagues/students at KSI/UCONN continue to do excellent
work and we are extremely fortunate to have this resource within District One.
A big “Thank You” to everyone in Rhode Island for their outstanding work with regards to fighting the recently
proposed elimination of AT state licensure. It appears that they are “off the list” for now… but the list has not
passed thru the RI House or Senate yet according to Andy Llaguno. Andy will keep us updated.
Finally, I have included several items that have been ongoing at the NATA. I tried to include those items that
been frequently asked questions to me by the membership this spring. I will be attending our May Board of
Director meetings in the next week.
Thanks again and as always if you have any questions or concerns please let me know.

National News
NATA Federal Legislation Efforts
The 114th Congress began in January. All prior pieces of legislation that NATA previously worked on
have been re-introduced and have been gaining support.
H.R. 921: The Sports Medicine Licensure Clarity Act has 10 co-sponsors, and the Senate version, S.
689, has one co-sponsor. This legislation would allow athletic trainers who cover athletic teams to
provide care in the states that their teams travel to as long as proper protocol is followed.
H.R. 829: The SAFE PLAY Act has 9 co-sponsors. The Senate version has been introduced as S. 436.
This piece of legislation would require the CDC to develop and expand youth athlete safety education
and awareness measures including illnesses such as cardiac conditions, concussions and heat related
illnesses.
H.Res. 112: The Secondary School Student Athletes’ Bill of Rights, has 5 co-sponsors, and S.Res 83
has 1 co-sponsor. This piece of legislation encourages sports safety in secondary schools, specifically
highlighting the importance of taking proper safety measures, providing a suitable environment and
having a knowledgeable athletic health care team in place. It also addresses the role that teachers,
parents and coaches play in student athlete safety.
• Contact your member of Congress to ask for their support on these bills.
Professional Degree Discussion
The research for the professional education degree is in its final stages. The first draft of the
Healthcare Economist report from Western Michigan University has been received, and the researchers
have presented initial findings to the NATA Executive Committee on Education.
ATEC and iLEAD Conference extremely successful
ATEC and iLEAD were held in Dallas the weekend of February 27 – March 1. ATEC had 598
registrants, the largest number in the history of the event!! However weather problems did strand
some of our District One members in Dallas for a few days!!

Summer Camp Scholarship Awarded
Manchester, NH – April 22, 2015 The Bertrand & Blanche Letendre Memorial Student Athletic
Training Summer School Scholarship is administered by the New Hampshire Musculoskeletal
Institute. The 2015 scholarship has been awarded to Kaitlyn Maguire. Ms. Maguire attends Arlington
Catholic High School, Arlington, MA. This scholarship provides funds for summer camp for students
interested in careers in the sports medicine field of athletic training. Kaitlyn became interested in the
field through observing her high school athletic trainer. Kaitlyn is looking forward to this first step in
working towards her career goal of being an athletic trainer. Kaitlyn enjoys yoga, being active and
spending time with friends. She will attend camp at Springfield (MA) College.
The Letendre Memorial Scholarship was created to honor Bertrand and Blanche Letendre, parents of
Mark Letendre. Mr. Letendre is a Manchester (NH) native. He attended Central High School then
studied athletic training at the University of Maine-Orono. He spent many years as a Major League
Baseball athletic trainer with San Francisco Giants and New York Yankees. Mr. Letendre currently
serves as MLB's Director of Umpire Medicine. He is a member of the Hall of Fame of the Boys &
Girls Club of Manchester, NH. Although he no longer lives here, he was just in Manchester last week
as the keynote speaker for the annual Manchester Boys and Girls Club breakfast.

Student Athletic Trainer Workshop
Springfield College will host the 22nd annual Athletic Training Student Workshop June 28th to July 2nd
2015. The workshop is a residential camp intended for high school students who want to explore
career opportunities in athletic training and related sports medicine disciplines. High school students
from across the country, Europe and Asia have attended the workshop. This intensive workshop
focuses on anatomy, injury prevention, and care of common lower extremity athletic injuries. The
program is designed like a professional continuing education conference. Short lectures and
demonstrations are followed with breakout sessions for hands-on learning. Numerous practice
sessions are built into the schedule for participants to learn and refine their taping skills. The
instructors create a fun learning environment and provide abundant feedback to the students in a
positive manner. The latest information about athletic injury prevention, recognition and management
is presented during the workshop. A popular aspect of the workshop is the hands-on exploration of
cadaver anatomy. Three whole body cadavers and a small class size give the attendees the
opportunity to explore the human anatomy up close. The students also participate in a presentation
about the different career options within athletic training, as part of the curriculum. A low student to
instructor ratio is the hallmark of the program. Each participant is regularly engaged with individual
attention from the instructors throughout the five day camp.
