What is a University Technical College (UTC)?
• A government funded technical academy for 14-18 year olds
• Curriculum designed by employers, the University of
Westminster and City of Westminster College
• Content of academic subjects linked to technical
specialisms including Transport Engineering and
Construction Development and Management
• Access to latest industry standard equipment technology
• At least 40% of learning time to technical specialisms
• Teaching and mentoring from specialists who currently
work in the industry
Employers’ Alliance
The Sir Simon Milton Westminster UTC Partners will bring
together an unrivalled alliance of leading employers working
alongside the University of Westminster to ensure that
teaching is tailored to the needs of the construction, transport
and engineering industries.
Network Rail is the lead employer partner of a group of
employers which includes Transport for London, Land
Securities, Crossrail, BT Fleet, SIr Robert McAlpine and
Alstom. The lead education partner for the scheme is the
University of Westminster and the Simon Milton Foundation is
the charitable partner.
How will the UTC benefit the local area?
• It will encourage young people into vocational training for
vital industries where there is currently a lack of skills
• The Employer Alliance companies are committed to
offering training and employment opportunities to students
who have attended the UTC
• Local residents will have access to the sports hall and roof
terrace for community uses outside of college hours
Promoting the legacy of Sir Simon Milton
The Sir Simon Milton Westminster UTC is scheduled to open
in 2017, welcoming 75 fourteen to sixteen year olds and 150
seventeen to eighteen year olds in its first year. The UTC will
eventually admit up to 550 students up to the age of 18.
The Sir Simon Milton Foundation will provide scholarships
and bursary awards to help students to progress into
apprenticeships and higher education, with an emphasis on
attracting those from less advantaged backgrounds, as well as
promoting good citizenship through volunteering, guidance
and mentoring.
