via e-Channel.

You can upgrade your skills, learn new skills, and work towards a General Education
Diploma (GED).
All courses are free of charge.
You can participate in live online classes that stress task-based, real-life learning
activities, or access online resources at your convenience for “anytime” learning.
You can use you own computer to access the courses or those at other locations,
including Contact North | Contact Nord’s 112 local online learning centres serving
populations in 600 small, remote, rural, Aboriginal and Francophone communities
throughout Ontario.
You can enrol in courses to achieve your goals related to employment, apprenticeship
registration, post-secondary education enrolment, secondary school completion,
or personal independence.
e-Channel is the Ministry of Training, Colleges and Universities-funded online
Literacy and Basic Skills program serving adult residents of Ontario at no cost.
Service is available in four cultural streams: Aboriginal, Francophone, Anglophone
and Deaf. e-Channel removes barriers of access by offering flexible online upgrading
opportunities to:
•
adults with disabilities
•
adults who live in rural and remote communities
•
adults with transportation or childcare issues
•
adults unable to participate in on-site programming
•
adults who simply prefer distance learning
e-Channel helps learners prepare for any one of these five goals: Employment,
Apprenticeship, Post-Secondary Education, Secondary Credit or Independence,
and uses task-based, real-life learning activities that follow the Ontario Adult Literacy
Curriculum Framework.
The courses and classes offered by the service delivery agencies listed on the
following pages can help you upgrade your skills, learn new skills, or work towards
your General Education Diploma (GED). Be sure to visit their individual websites for
detailed information about the curriculum available and methods of delivery. You can
also visit the e-Channel website for the most current listing of courses and classes

Vous pouvez actualiser vos compétences, apprendre de nouvelles habiletés et étudier
en vue d’obtenir un certificat d’équivalence d’études secondaires de l’Ontario.
Tous les cours sont offerts gratuitement.
Vous pouvez participer à des classes en ligne en direct, qui mettent l’accent sur
des activités d’apprentissage pratiques centrées sur les tâches, ou accéder à des
ressources en ligne quand cela vous convient pour un apprentissage « en tout
temps ».
Vous pouvez utiliser votre propre ordinateur pour accéder aux cours ou à d’autres
emplacements, y compris les 112 centres d’apprentissage en ligne local de
Contact North | Contact Nord situés dans 600 communautés petites, éloignées,
rurales, autochtones et francophones à travers l’Ontario.
Vous pouvez vous inscrire à des cours afin de réaliser vos objectifs d’emploi, de
formation en apprentissage, d’études postsecondaires, d’achèvement du cours
secondaire ou d’autonomie personnelle.
Apprentissage en ligne est le Programme d’alphabétisation et de formation de base
en ligne du ministère de la Formation et des Collèges et Universités, qui subventionne
ce programme gratuit à l’intention des adultes résidant en Ontario.
Ce service est disponible dans quatre volets culturels pour les personnes
autochtones, francophones, anglophones et sourdes. Apprentissage en ligne facilite
l’accès en proposant des occasions souples de perfectionnement en ligne :
•
aux personnes handicapées,
•
aux gens des communautés rurales ou éloignées,
•
aux personnes qui ont des difficultés de transport ou de garde d’enfants,
•
aux personnes qui ne peuvent pas participer aux programmes sur place,
•
aux personnes qui préfèrent tout simplement l’apprentissage à distance.
Apprentissage en ligne aide les apprenantes et apprenants à se préparer pour l’une
des cinq voies de transition : l’emploi, la formation en apprentissage, les études
postsecondaires, les études secondaires ou l’autonomie. Pour ce faire, Apprentissage
en ligne utilise des activités d’apprentissage pratiques qui sont axées sur les tâches
et qui respectent les six compétences du Curriculum en littératie des adultes
de l’Ontario.
Les classes et les cours offerts par les fournisseurs de prestation de ces services,
mentionnés dans les pages suivantes, peuvent vous aider à perfectionner vos
habiletés, à acquérir de nouvelles compétences ou à travailler en vue d’obtenir votre
certificat d’équivalence d’études secondaires de l’Ontario. Assurez-vous de visiter
les sites Web individuels de ces fournisseurs pour avoir de l’information détaillée au
sujet du curriculum proposé et des modes de prestation. Vous pouvez aussi visiter

Courses and Registration
The courses that e-Channel makes available are offered by the Literacy and Basic
Skills organizations in Ontario that serve Francophone, Anglophone, Aboriginal, and
Deaf communities online.
Students can choose their courses from the lists on the following pages and register
with the organization offering the course. You will then be given a personal account
with e-Channel and be able to access your course.
Each lead organization serves a particular community or need:
•
ACE Distance - Academic and Career Entrance - providing courses In
English and French for preparation for post-secondary education and
apprenticeship training.
•
Deaf Learn Now - providing courses for the Deaf, Blind-Deaf and Hard
of Hearing students.
•
Good Learning Anywhere - providing courses for Aboriginal students.
•
The Learning Hub - providing courses for the Anglophone students.
•

Student Support
On the e-Channel website, students can also find resources to help them access and
benefit from their classes. The student section of the website features videos on how
to login and take part in classes to prepare students for an online learning experience.
As well, there are live chat and phone options for contacting the Contact North |
Contact Nord’s Help Desk at 1-888-850-4628 for technical support if difficulties are
encountered in joining a class

Les cours et l’inscription
Les cours proposés par Apprentissage en ligne sont offerts par des organismes
de littératie et de compétences de base en Ontario, qui servent des communautés
francophones, anglophones, autochtones et de personnes sourdes en ligne.
Les étudiantes et étudiants peuvent choisir leurs cours dans les listes affichées sur
les pages suivantes et s’inscrire auprès du principal organisme responsable qui offre
le cours sélectionné. Ensuite, un compte personnel auprès d’Apprentissage en ligne
vous sera attribué et vous pourrez alors accéder à votre cours.
Chaque principal organisme responsable sert une communauté particulière ou
répond à un besoin spécifique :

le programme Accès carrières études (ACE) – fournit des cours en français et en
anglais pour la préparation en vue des études postsecondaires et de la formation
en apprentissage;
•
le programme Deaf Learn Now – fournit des cours à l’intention des étudiantes
et étudiants sourds, sourds et aveugles ou malentendants;
•
le programme Good Learning Anywhere – fournit des cours à l’intention des
étudiantes et étudiants autochtones;
•
The Learning Hub – fournit des cours à l’intention des étudiantes et étudiants
anglophones;
•
Le service de formation pour adultes de l’Ontario (la F@D) de la Coalition
ontarienne de formation des adultes (COFA) – fournit des cours à l’intention des
étudiantes et étudiants francophones.
Le soutien aux étudiantes et étudiants
Sur le site Web d’Apprentissage en ligne, les étudiantes et étudiants peuvent aussi
trouver des ressources pour les aider à accéder à leurs classes et à en bénéficier.
Le site Web étudiant présente des vidéos sur la façon de se connecter aux classes
et comment y participer afin de préparer les étudiantes et étudiants à leur expérience
d’apprentissage en ligne. De plus, nous offrons des options de clavardage en direct,

ACE Distance – Academic & Career Entrance
Take the courses you need for admission to college and apprenticeship
programs.
There will be 2 free intakes during the Spring/Summer 2015 semester. Intakes will
occur in April 2015 and June 2015.

1. Complete the Consent & Information form required by our funder, the Ministry
of Training, Colleges and Universities for all students. To access the form please go
to: https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/BYMLQXS
2. Complete the 20-hour Learn to Learn course required of all students.
Students can sign up for Learn to Learn by going to our website:
http://www.acedistancedelivery.ca Click on the 6th tab on the left
(L2L Registration). Complete the form at the bottom of the page and click on the
Register button. Students will receive follow up instructions from Marla White and
will be able to start the Learn to Learn course the following Monday.
3. Complete the ESEE (Essential Skills) assessment and meet the admission standard
required for ACE courses.
Fee Paying Sections
For students who choose not to wait for a seat in a free section, we have fee paying
sections available throughout the year. For a list of colleges that register for fee paying
sections, please check our website at http://www.acedistancedelivery.ca.

Under the Sink – A home chemical safety course: Everyone has cleaning
products in their home, but do you know how to use them safely? This course
will teach the basics of reading safety symbols and directions on cleaning
product labels.

Welcome to Deaf Learn Now: This is a mandatory course for all learners joining
Deaf Learn Now. Learn how to use the site, work with your teachers, and get the
most from your online learning experience.
These courses are all asynchronous, and learners can register at any time. The 4 Deaf
Studies courses all take 6 weeks to complete, and are offered every 2 months.

Introduction to Saba
Apr. 1 Wed., 10:30 a.m. - 12:30 p.m.

This 2-hour class introduces the LIVE
classroom, Saba, to new learners
registered with GLA. During this class,
we will use the whiteboard and its onscreen tools, as well as text chat and use
our microphones to communicate with
other learners across Ontario. Learners
are encouraged to take this course
before signing up for other LIVE courses.

COMPUTER SKILLS
Creating Documents
Apr. 13 - May 25
Mon., 1:30 p.m. - 3:30 p.m.
Posters, lists, sign-up sheets, résumés
and newsletters, are all examples of
documents that can be created using a
word processing program. In this course,
we will learn the basics of how to use
these programs and how to create great
looking documents for school, work or
home. A Gmail account will be required
as we will be using Google Documents.
Note: This is a 6-session course.

Creating Presentations
Apr. 8 - May 13
Wed., 1:30 p.m. - 3:30 p.m.
Presentations can be used to persuade
or inform your audience! Sign up for
this course to learn how to use Google
Presentations (similar to PowerPoint) to
create presentations. Time will be spent
on developing online presentation skills to
be used to do your final presentation.
Note: This is a 6-Session course.
Creating Spreadsheets
May 7 - Jun. 11
Thurs., 10:30 a.m. - 12:30 p.m.
Spreadsheet programs like Excel and
Google Sheets are used to organize data
and information. They have many uses in
and out of the workplace. We will discuss
what a spreadsheet is and what it can
be used for. As well, we will practice
creating spreadsheets and using the
basic functions. This course is for people
who have not used spreadsheets before.
A Gmail account is required.
Getting to Know Your Mobile Devices
Apr. 28 & Apr. 30
Tues. & Thurs, 10:30 a.m. - 12:30 p.m.
Jun. 1 & Jun. 3
Mon. & Wed., 1:30 p.m. - 3:30 p.m.
In this course, learners will be introduced
to the world of mobile devices such as
smart phones and tablets. Together, we
will discuss what are mobile devices
and some of their many uses, and
the advantages and disadvantages to
owning/using a mobile device. We will
explore how to access applications on
devices and the features of the “Big 3”
brands. This class is a basic overview for
new users of mobile devices.

Join us for this 2-hour LIVE Saba
class as we talk about Moodle and
the upcoming Short courses that are

Social Media for School, Work
and Home
Apr. 15 - May 20

Facebook, YouTube, Blogs, Pinterest,
Twitter and LinkedIn – online ways to
communicate for school, work and
home. Each week, we will learn about
a different social media program and
the basics of how it is used. We will
also discuss throughout the class how
to be aware of and manage our “digital
identity”!

Bookkeeping Essential Skills
May 5 - Jun. 9
Tues., 7:30 p.m. - 9:30 p.m.
Do you enjoy working with numbers and
organizing information? If so, a job in
bookkeeping may be for you! This course
will introduce the basics of bookkeeping
and practice the Essentials Skills required
for this job! Topics will include What
is a bookkeeper? Basic bookkeeping
terminology, the importance of keeping
accurate records and much more.
INDEPENDENCE
Creating a Personal Budget
May 5 - May 21
Tues. & Thurs, 1:30 p.m. - 3:30 p.m.
Creating a budget can help us track our
spending habits. This allows us to identify
ways to spend our money in ways that
will help us meet our goals! Whether your
goal is to buy a new snow machine, save
money for school, or set aside money for
some fun – creating a budget can help
you work towards it.

Creative Writing
May 5 - Jun. 9
Tues., 10:30 a.m. - 12:30 p.m.
Come join us as we experiment with
writing and build our confidence putting
pen to paper (or finger to keyboard!).
Together, we will use writing exercises
to practice getting ideas flowing. As we
become more comfortable, we will have
the chance to share the stories we wrote
using our senses, our feelings and the
characters we created.
Exploring Ontario First Nations
Cultures
Apr. 7 - Apr. 23
Tues. & Thurs., 1:30 p.m. - 3:30 p.m.
This course aims to introduce us to four
different First Nations in Ontario. Through
presentations and videos, we will explore
a condensed history, traditional roles and
governance as well as discuss and break
down misconceptions and stereotypes.
A variety of resources for self-directed
learning will be examined.
This is a 6-session course.
G1 Drivers Test - Preparing
to Write the Test
May 26 - Jun. 11
Tues. & Thurs, 1:30 p.m. - 3:30 p.m.
*New Spring 2015 To become a
licensed driver in Ontario, you must
pass a written test. Take this course to
learn about the rules of the road, how to
identify traffic signs and about the types
of questions on the test. This course also
includes practice tests for you to try. It
will be lead by an instructor in the live
classroom.
This is a 6-session course.
Self Management / Self Direction
Apr. 7 - Apr. 23
Tues. & Thurs., 10:30 a.m. - 12:30 p.m.
This course focuses on preparing
learners to make decisions and set
goals for life and employment based
on a resource from the Ontario Native
Literacy Coalition. It includes topics such
as Transitions, Decision Making, Goal
Setting, Time Management, Learning
Styles and Independent Learning.

SHARING CIRCLE
Sharing Circle
All learners who register with GLA will
automatically be enrolled into Sharing
Circles. Attendance is optional.

Jun. 15 Mon., 10:30 a.m. - 12:30 p.m.
Maajaan! Join us for our monthly
Sharing Circle where we discuss
traditional teachings and contemporary
learning about subjects relevant to
today’s learners. The Sharing Circle
may also include an inspirational and
motivational guest speaker. Past circles
have included guests such as author
Drew Hayden Taylor and award winning
musician Shy-Anne Hovorka. There will
be opportunities for participants to ask
questions during this LIVE session.
Note: Participants DO NOT have to be
registered with GLA to join the Sharing
Circle but must sign up on our website to
receive a login.
INDEPENDENT STUDY
With Independent Study courses, there
are no scheduled classes and learners
progress through the course at their
own pace.
Note: Learners who are new to
Independent Learning are encouraged
to enrol into one of the live 2-hour
Introduction to Independent Learning
courses listed in the above “Live” course
section.
Learners can login to the online system
anytime that is convenient for them, to
watch a video, take a test, or read a
chapter. Help and guidance is available to
the learner from their online mentor. The
online mentor works with the learner to
choose the courses the learner needs to
help them reach their goals. The mentor
follows the learner’s progress and will be
ready to advise the learner on every step
along the way.
Independent learning is available in the

EMPLOYMENT
Workplace Writing
This independent course teaches how
to write simply and effectively in a
business setting. You will learn how to
write memos, directions, letters, meeting
documents, reports, and how to fill out
forms. It consists of 25 modules.
PreGED Science
This independent learning course is for
you if you are preparing to write your
GED or take a GED prep course. In
this course, topics such as matter and
basic biology are covered. You are able
to progress through this course at your
own pace. Your mentor will be available
any questions.
PREPARATION FOR CREDIT AND
POST-SECONDARY
PreGED Math
GED or take a GED prep course. You can
start with addition and subtraction and
work your way up to fractions, ratios
and percentages. Your mentor can help
you decide where you should start. You
are able to progress through this course
at your own pace. Your mentor will be
available to follow your progress and
answer any questions.
PreGED Writing
This independent learning course is
for you if you are preparing to write
your GED or take a GED prep course.
You can start on vocabulary and work
your way up to working on sentences
and punctuation. You are able to
progress through this course at your
to follow your progress, and answer
any questions.
PreGED Social Studies
GED or take a GED prep course. In this
course, topics such as geography, world
history, and using charts and graphs
are covered. You are able to progress
through this course at your own pace.
Your mentor will be available to follow
your progress and answer any questions.
Ready for College Reading
Are you thinking of applying to college
or other training? Have you been out
of school for a while and would like to
brush up on your reading? Sign up for
this course to learn and practice topics
such as taking notes, improving your
vocabulary, and identifying the main idea.
You are able to progress through at this
course at your own pace. Your mentor
will be available to follow your progress,
and answer any questions.
PreGED Reading
GED or take a GED prep course. You can
start with topics such as basic reading
strategies and identifying key words
and finding the main idea. You are able

ESSENTIAL SKILLS
Computer Use Essential Skills
Essential Skills are the skills needed for
work, learning and life. They provide
the foundation for learning all other
skills. In this independent learning
course, you will complete such topics
as Introduction to Computers, using
the Internet, spreadsheets and word
processing. Please note that tutorials are
demonstrated in Microsoft. You are able

Math Essential Skills
work, learning and life. They provide the
foundation for learning all other skills. In
this independent learning course, you will
focus on numeracy and the ability to use
numbers. We use this skill when working
with money, scheduling activities,
budgeting or measuring things. You are
able to progress through this course
Physical Education
Physical activity plays an important
role in health, well-being and quality of
life. It’s important to have the tools and
knowledge prior to getting more active
so we can stay motivated to reach our
goals. This course includes 3 Units:
Getting Active; Improving Performance;
and Lifestyle. Popular unit topics include:

Reading Essential Skills

how to write a sentence by using correct
punctuation in the right places so that it
assists the reader to understand what
you are saying. Learn about periods,
commas, question marks, etc. and when
to use them in notes, emails, directions,
instructions, letters and notices. Browse
some websites that can help you. Review
a list of books that you can use as
reference sources.

Take this course if you think reading
comprehension is painful and confusing.
We will identify what kind of a reader you
are and discover techniques to warm up
your brain before starting to read. You
are reading but you don’t understand
what you are reading? You are reading
but you cannot keep what you read in
your head? Don’t worry. We will create
your own special toolbox to help you with
your reading comprehension and this
in turn will make reading a pleasurable
experience for you.

Progressive Spelling 2

In this course learn more consonant
blends at beginning of words: bl, pl,
cl, thr, spr, spl, cr, pr, etc. Also learn
consonant blends at ends of words:
sk, ck, ll, nk, lk etc. Learn long vowel
spelling patterns: au, ea, ie, ou, ui. Learn
to make a memory jogger to remember
how to spell your difficult words. Bring
your word journal to write down your
memory joggers.

your medicine is for or when to take it?
Does going to the doctor or pharmacy
cause a lot of confusion? Using realworld examples, this course will give
you the basics to understand what is
written on your prescription from the
doctor, prescription container, over-thecounter containers, and other medical
literature. We will discuss frequency of
medication, parts of the labels, and who
to ask if you have questions regarding
your medication.

This beginner course gets you ready
to spell. Review the alphabet. Learn
the consonant sounds. Learn the short
vowel sounds. Practise pronouncing the

patterns. Learn the 1+1+1 rule. Learn
about root words. Learn about syllables.
Start a spelling journal. Get ready to
practise spelling some simple words!

This beginner course gives you more
spelling basics. The alphabet and

ee, ea, ai, oa, oo. Learn about twosyllable words. Build your vocabulary by
learning about word families. Learn about
www.dictionary.com. Start a word journal

May 27 Wed., 10:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m.
Become a better speller by learning
more spelling rules. This course covers
the k sound, the final e in words, words
ending in c and y and nouns ending in o.
Participate online with an instructor and
discover spelling websites that provide
useful tips for you.

Tips for Better Spelling and Grammar
Apr. 21 Tues., 1:00 p.m. - 3:00 p.m.
Review the difficult sounds to spell:
the shen sound at the end of a words;
th, wh, ch and sh in words; ough and
challenge words. How about the long
u sound? Learn more suffixes (plurals
and verb tenses). Learn how to make
up an acrostic and memorize it to help
you remember all of the letters in a
word. Build word power and use correct
spelling in sentences.

INDEPENDENT STUDY
In addition to Live Classes, the
LearningHUB offers Independent Study
options for a variety of subject areas,
including reading, writing, math, science,
social studies and computer use. Adults
pursuing their Ontario Secondary School
Diploma (OSSD), Grade 12 equivalency
(GED), or upgrading for employment,
apprenticeship, post-secondary or
independence reasons, can register
for learning activities or short courses
customized to their skill level and need.
Independent Study curriculum can be
accessed 24 hours/day, 7 days/week,
so it fits even the busiest schedule.
After registering, learners complete
an intake assessment (sent within
3 business days of registration) and
are assigned an online practitioner to
work with them to create a learning
plan, answer questions, and assign a
username, password and appropriate
curriculum.

is available year-round through the
LearningHUB website, www.learninghub.
