GRADE 4
Name:
A verb is a doing or
action word e.g. jump, run, swim.
It is usually used in one of three
tenses – the present tense, the
past tense and the future tense.
The tense tells us when the action
took place.
1. Underline the verbs in the following sentences.
a) Many people admired the girl’s dazzling beauty.
b) The girl admired the young man.
c) The news spread all over the village.
d) The girl begged him to eat the fruit.
e) A few days later, a young, handsome, rich prince arrived.
A verb changes its form according
to the time or tense used for the
action. The simple present tense
describes actions that take place
now.
2. Underline the correct form of the
verb showing the simple present tense.
a) He tasted/tastes the fruit and smiles/smiled.
b) He eats/ate all the delicious fruit.
c) The head of all the farmers refuses/refused
to eat the fruit.
d) A rich, young, handsome prince arrived/arrives.
e) The girl burst/bursts into tears of anger and disappointment.

Read this text and change all the verbs to the simple present tense.
The girl waited patiently. Midday passed, and then two o’clock. At four o’clock, the
farmer asked for water. The girl prayed that he would eat the fruit, but she was
still praying when the clock turned to seven. This farmer had overcome the test of
endurance set by her parents! Her parents had to hand over their daughter to the
“lazy one”.
A transitive verb has a direct object. E.g. He wrote a letter
An intransitive verb does not have an object. E.g. He wrote to the
newspaper
Underline the verbs. Say whether they are transitive or intransitive verbs.
a) The prince’s men offered the farmer money and cattle.

b) The servants dressed the girl in fine clothes.
___________________
c) She took him aside.
___________________
d) She begged him not to eat the fruit.
___________________
e) The chief came around.
___________________
f) The chief ate hungrily.

A sentence usually has a subject, a verb and an object.
E.g. the girl (subject) peels (verb) the apple (object).
A singular subject must have a singular verb. A plural subject must have
a plural verb.
