The Urban Age project – the Endless City

Population of the Irish State 1996 – 2006;

3.6m to 4.3m, 17% increase;
•
Unevenly throughout the Gateway Urban Areas,
Cities and Counties;
•
Largest growth in Fingal County, Galway City,
South Dublin with Cork City reduction;
•
Addressing rural population decline and related
heritage assets;

Irelands Built Heritage Policy objectives in 2014 included:
• Developing Fiscal Strategies/ Incentives for Built Heritage with Department
of Finance/DPER (Capital Stimulus, continued tax incentives and heritage
led regeneration or reuse) incl. ERDF Funding/Horizon 2020;
• Monitor and profile all expenditure relating to the Built Heritage
Capital/Current Programme of DAHG to invest in heritage renewal (Built
Heritage Jobs Leverage Scheme, Historic Towns Initiative, Living City
Initiative and Home Improvement Scheme 2013);
• Use and co-ordinate funding available (Rural Development programme/EU
Structural Funding to invest in heritage conservation and tourism renewal;

Addressing objectives of Re-use and Redundancy – Urban and rural;

A dialogue on existing fiscal and financial incentives currently being
deployed across Europe and a review of their effectiveness or lessons
learned;

Range of other mechanisms required to aid heritage led regeneration
such as EU/national policies, guidance and regulatory standards;
-
Financial models to sustain both public and private heritage assets into
the future;

Determining core heritage objectives when managing our cultural assets
effectively;
