COURSE OUTLINE
Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Spectroscopy, (NMR) studies the physical, chemical and
biological properties of a matter. This technique works on a basis of the difference produced
when a nuclei absorbs and re-emits radiation when exposed to a magnetic field. The versatility
of NMR makes it an essential tool in an array of fields’ including chemistry, biology, physics and
medicine. This course will cover;

• Principal of NMR
• Application of NMR in Ionic Liquids
• Hypothetical sample & real samples
• ID and 2D NMR experiments
OBJECTIVES
Upon completion of this 2-day course, participants will be able to;
• understand the underlying mechanism behind the operations of NMR spectroscopy
• comprehend the practical aspects of NMR Spectroscopy sample preparation
• utilize a wide variety of NMR analysis to aid in their respective research areas.
• identify the applications of NMR in ionic liquids.

COURSE INSTRUCTORS
Dr Chin-Hoe Teh obtained his PhD in Pharmaceutical Chemistry from University of
Sains Malaysia in 2011. In 2011, he joined Bruker Malaysia as a NMR Application
Scientist. His NMR application interests includes natural products-NMR
spectroscopy, metabolomics, quantitative NMR and fast NMR techniques. Chin-Hoe
has published several scientific articles in tier-one ISI scientific journals, and has been invited as
a speaker in national conferences. He has received some awards during his BSc and PhD study
from University of Malaya and University of Sains Malaysia, respectively. The awards from
University Malaya include Ajax Chemical Book Prize 2002 (for the best student in Chemistry),
University Book Prize (2002), and Member of Dean Lists for five out of six semesters (1999 2002). Meanwhile, he has been awarded Anugerah Sanggar Sanjung- Journal Publication
Category (2009-2012) by USM.
Dr Cecilia Devi Wilfred is an Associate Professor at Universiti Teknologi PETRONAS
with more than 16 years of research experience and 4 years experience in industry.
She obtained her PhD in Organic Chemistry from University of York in 2004. She is a
Member of the American Chemical Society (ACS) since 2011 and a Fellow Member of
Institut Kimia Malaysia (IKM).
