Introduction
The purpose of this project was to redesign the Enterprise 2.0 wiki. The
Enterprise 2.0 class created the wiki in order to provide information about various ecommerce and social networking sites and applications. When we started this project the
wiki was very disorganized and had difficult navigation. The list of the sites was most
difficult to find because a user would have to click through about four different links until
they got to the desired page. We plan on correcting this by making the navigation afford
the user’s needs better. The consistency of the actually e-commerce pages is non-existent
so we plan on rearranging the pages so they all have the same structure. The screenshots
and logos will also be updated on all the pages.
Heuristics
On this wiki the main usability flaws were determined by using four different
heuristics. We applied are changes to best suit and follow the heuristic guidelines. The
first main heuristic we covered was consistency and standards. We wanted all pages to be
consist with each other and what information is presented on the pages. We did this by
making a template that was used on all of the pages within the wiki. The main template
used was the for the highlighted content box. This way that all the pages had the same
information presented to the user. This is shown as photo 1 below. The next heuristic is
error prevention which we applied to make an easier search and navigation that will help
solve this problem. The recommendations of the navigation was to add tab bars at the top
of the screen as a breadcrumb style navigation. This way is is easier for the user to find
where they are going and where they are coming from. These changes also apply to the
flexibility and efficiency of use. The navigation throughout has a tagline system that will
help make the site more efficient for all the users. This goes in place of keeping the user
on track of where they want to go and where they have come from. In case they need to
go back and change the places they have came from. Since before if you clicked on the
wrong page then you would have to go back to the home page then back to the special
pages then pages tab. This was a long process for one wrong misclick. We also redid the
layout of the website to Monobook instead of the default setting. This is shown in Photo
3 and in Photo 2 is the previous design on the wiki. This goes along with the heuristic of
aesthetic and minimalist design. There is too much noise throughout the site with the
navigation and searching. This should be cleaned up due to the change of navigation
style. This is an information database that must allow users to easily gain access to the
information we provide on our site.
Navigation
We redid the homepage of the wiki to be able to access all the enterprise 2.0 wiki
pages. We did this by adding a link to the home page that has all of the pages attached to
it. The home page had no form of navigation or way to access the pages. There is a lot of
unnecessary information provided to the common users that should not be put on the site
to be accessed. This should be hidden and taken away so it is not confusing. This goes
back to the minimalist design and only providing information that is necessary to the
user. Also, the navigation in general should be redone. There will be a more consistency,
clear, and concise navigation that will be the same and visible on all pages.
Tagging and Taxonomy System
All of the pages should be categorized with the use of a tagging system. This will
help with access to pages and easier to navigate throughout the wiki. The pages will be
tagged based on e-commerce, usability, social media platforms, and the type of site. This
can the taxonomy and show its organization throughout all the pages and pull them all
together. The tagging is the best way to navigate the site when the user is unsure of what
they are looking for or trying to find something they are unsure of the name of.
Revamp of Site
To apply the four heuristics mentioned early and make it easier for the user we
redid every page that was on the wiki. We either updated the information, revamped the
logos and the screenshots, made sure all of them had logo and screenshots, or deleted
pages that were unnecessary or the site did not exist anymore. To keep the site up to date
we added the mobile and app part onto the content box, shown in Photo 1. Since some of
the pages are missing this some of this information, it will give consistently throughout
the wiki making sure that every page has a highlighted content box, a logo and an up to
date screenshot. They are all consistent through the use of a template that we created for
the format of the page. Something that needs to be done in the future is to look into the
security or sever of LVC and try to optimize the speed of loading. It lags compared to
other site in speed which is a turn off to the user.
Conclusion
In conclusion, when completed the site will afford better use of the navigation,
will be more consistent and up-to-date and have all around have better usability. The wiki
will be a great reference source for users to gain information regarding e-commerce and
social networking sites and applications. The tagging system that we plan on installing is
what will make this wiki an easy to use reference because the pages will be organized
based on e-commerce, usability, social media, platform, and type of site. Also, the users
will have no problem navigating through the site due to our breadcrumb tab navigation
system and also better visibility of the navigation. Overall the wiki will just be more
efficient for its users.
