Dr Charlotte Bolton
Programme Clinical Associate Professor in Respiratory Medicine, University of Nottingham, & Clinical
Lead – East Midlands Respiratory Programme
Charlotte’s clinical and research interests are chronic respiratory disease,
particularly COPD; pulmonary rehabilitation and co-morbidities. She is one
of the Clinical Leads for the East Midlands Respiratory Programme and
leads COPD work at NUH. She has an active research profile across
clinical studies, translational and epidemiological projects.
She was chair of the first BTS pulmonary rehabilitation guidelines and cochair of the associated Quality Standards.

Ann Broadbent
Patient Representative, Carer, & Asthma UK Volunteer
Ann has been a ’Stand Up For Asthma’ volunteer for Lincolnshire for over
15 years visiting local groups and schools to collect fundraising donations
and give talks to increase the awareness of asthma.
She welcomed the support of Asthma UK back in the late 1980s when her
first child became seriously ill as a baby and received over 10 doses of
medicine a day to control her breathing difficulties, which was eventually
diagnosed as asthma. Her children are now adults and members of her
family experience asthma in a variety of ways, often changing for each
individual over time.
A former teacher, Ann runs her own company providing Primary Maths
support to schools both in the UK and internationally

Alan McGurk
Training Consultant & Account Manager – PRIMIS, University of Nottingham
Alan has been involved in primary health care computing since 1991. Prior
to joining PRIMIS in 2003 Alan held a number of positions with GP clinical
IT system suppliers.
Alan’s career has seen him develop and deliver training in clinical coding,
report query writing, template construction, commissioning, change
management, data quality, data migrations, medical terminology, and
systems administration.
Over the last twelve years work with PRIMIS has taken him to a variety of
health care settings across all parts of the UK.

Professor Mike Morgan
Respiratory National Clinical Director
Professor Mike Morgan is the National Clinical Director for Respiratory
Services in England.
He is a consultant respiratory physician at the Department of Respiratory
Medicine, Allergy and Thoracic Surgery at the University Hospitals of
Leicester NHS Trust at Glenfield Hospital and Honorary Professor at the
University of Leicester.
He is also a Vice President of the British Lung Foundation, the editor of
Chronic Respiratory Disease and previously, Chairman of the Asthma UK
research committee. He has recently demitted as Chairman of the
Executive of the British Thoracic Society.

Professor Rachel Munton
Managing Director – East Midlands AHSN
Professor Rachel Munton is Managing Director of East Midlands Academic
Health Science Network, a partnership organisation between the NHS,
Higher Education and Industry.
Her previous roles span national and regional portfolios, including Director
of the National Institute for Health Research Collaboration for Leadership
in Applied Health Research and Care for Nottinghamshire, Derbyshire,
Lincolnshire: Director of the East Midlands Leadership Academy, Interim
Director of Nursing for NHS East Midlands, Executive Director of Nursing
and Allied Health Professionals at Nottinghamshire Healthcare NHS Trust,
Deputy Chief Executive of the Mental Health Act Commission, Director of
Mental Health Nursing at the Department of Health, and Associate for
Leadership for Inclusion at the NHS Leadership Academy.
Rachel is a Registered Mental Health Nurse and Adult Nurse, with a
passion for service user/patient involvement, inclusive leadership, equality
and diversity. She is also a special advisor to Mansfield and Ashfield
Clinical Commissioning Group governing body, and was included in the
HSJ's top 50 Inspirational Women in the NHS 2014.

Dr Anna Murphy
Consultant respiratory pharmacist – University Hospitals of Leicester NHS Trust, and Honorary Visiting
Professor, School of Pharmacy – DeMontfort University
Anna Murphy is a consultant respiratory pharmacist at University Hospitals
of Leicester NHS Trust and Honorary Visiting Professor, School of
Pharmacy, DeMontfort University.
The clinical aspect of her post offers assessment, medicines optimisation,
monitoring and advice to people with respiratory disease, working both in
hospital and within medical practices. Working across Leicestershire the
post includes interface care and the development of services for
respiratory patients.
She recently led a NHS Innovation Project
investigating the role of community pharmacists in the management of
people with asthma.
Anna currently works with several national groups and organisations on
issues surrounding prescribing in respiratory disease. Anna has published
widely in peer reviewed journals. She is author of Asthma-in-Focus, a book
primarily for pharmacists & other non-medical prescribers and recently
produced the “7-Steps to Success” education materials.
Research interests include medicine adherence in people with respiratory
disease and pharmacy practice research.

Dr Mitesh Patel
NIHR Clinical Lecturer in Respiratory Medicine – University of Nottingham
Mitesh is a clinical researcher working at the Nottingham Respiratory
Research Unit and the severe asthma service at Nottingham City Hospital.
Mitesh gained experience of electronic monitoring to measure inhaler use
whilst working in Professor Richard Beasley's team at the Medical Research
Institute of New Zealand in Wellington. He undertook a RCT of two inhaled
asthma treatment regimens in 300 people at-risk of severe exacerbations,
and used electronic monitoring to study the risks and benefits of these
treatments.

Melanie Perry
Smoking Cessation Specialist for Secondary Care – Leicester City Stop Smoking Service
Melanie’s career with the NHS began some twenty-five years ago, nursing
within secondary care and then within primary care. This is where she
developed her skills and experience in health promotion.
She joined Leicestershire County Stop Smoking Service as a pregnancy
advisor for two and a half years before joining Leicester City in 2008 taking
the lead for acute care, a newly created role that has seen referrals
increase from 30 to 750 per quarter at their peak.
Part of Melanie’s role is to educate all health care professionals on the
health benefits of not smoking, including reduced risk of serious smokingrelated diseases through cessation or harm reduction. She also teaches
and informs those who have limited knowledge of smoking cessation
treatments and the health harms of smoking.
Melanie feels that her approach is one of “hearts & minds”, engaging
people through an inspirational and committed approach. She aims to
deliver and reach as many health care professionals as possible in order to
shift the mind-set and attitudes towards smoking and its impact on the
patient.
On several occasions she has supported the Department of Health and
Government Office East Midlands with national initiatives such as CQUIN,
QIPP and with the launch of the Secondary Care Smoking Cessation
Guidance in 2009. She has most recently worked on the creation of a new
training film, which has been endorsed by the British Thoracic Society.

Dermot Ryan
GP
Dermot Ryan was a GP in Loughborough for 30 years with a long standing
interest in Asthma.
He was twice chairman of the PCRS: during his tenure he established the Chair
of Primary care Respiratory Medicine at the University of Aberdeen and was
instrumental in establishing the npjPrimary Care Respiratory Medicine.
He was Clinical Lead for COPD for The East Midlands Strategic Health Authority
until its closure in April 2013, and he continues his interests as an Honorary
Clinical Researcher, University of Edinburgh and member of the Respiratory
Effectiveness Group.
He was a co-author on the Difficult Asthma position paper of the European
Academy of Allergy and Clinical Immunology.

Jane Scullion
Respiratory Nurse Consultant, UHL Glenfield, & Clinical Lead – East Midlands Respiratory Programme
Jane works at University Hospitals Leicester (UHL) as Respiratory Nurse
Consultant.
Jane’s areas of interest include chronic disease management in respiratory
disorders, inhaler use, COPD/Asthma/ILD, palliative care, primary and
secondary care interface.

Dr Dominick Shaw
Associate Clinical Professor and Honorary Consultant, University of Nottingham and Nottingham
University Hospitals NHS Trust
Dominick is a clinical academic and lead for the Nottingham Difficult
asthma service.
He specialises in campus to clinic asthma research. Other research
interests include the use of information technology to capture novel forms
of clinical data
Dominick also co-leads the medical informatics workstream for the East
Midlands Academic Health Sciences Network.

Professor Mike Thomas
Professor of Primary Care Research – University of Southampton
Prof. Thomas holds the Chair of Primary Care Research at the University of
Southampton, UK, an institution with an international profile in asthma
and respiratory research, and leads the community-based respiratory
research programme.
His research interests centre on respiratory disease management in
community settings, including the diagnosis and management of asthma
and COPD and the assessment of effectiveness of pharmacological and
non-pharmacological therapies in every-day clinical settings. He has a
particular interest in ‘real-world’ outcomes and pragmatic clinical research,
and has published and lectured widely on these topics.
He is the chief investigator in a number of current respiratory studies. He
is an associate editor of the Primary Care Respiratory Journal. He is former
Chief Medical Officer of Asthma UK, the research chairman of the
International Primary Care Respiratory Group and has acted as an expert
advisor on several UK NICE evaluations in the respiratory field. He was a
steering group member of the UK National review of Asthma deaths
