Cyprus island has very limited water resources. The right way to find a long term-solution of water shortage problem of the island is appeared to be possible by transferring water from Turkey to TRNC. “The Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus Water Supply Project” is launched to supply drinking and irrigation water for from the southern Turkey to Northern Cyprus untill 2045 via suspended pipeline across the Mediterranean Sea. The project will be the first of its kind in the world and supply 75 000 000 m3 of water to TRNC annually. This international water diversion project will be carried out by State Hydraulic Works (DSI) of Turkish Republic under three phases: 1. Turkish side activities 2. Sea crossing 3. TRNC side activities 1. Turkish side of the Project contains: Alakopru Dam and HEPP (26 MW) 23 km long transmission line Anamuryum balancing tank Sea entrance valve rooms 2. Sea Crossing Phase: What makes this project important is the fact that such a long-distance transition with approximately 80 kilometers under the sea is the first in the World. Sea transition is implemented by a very special 1,6 meters wide polyethylene pipe hanging in 250 meters depth from sea level by tying the pipe with special ropes in each 500 meters to the sea bottom. 3. TRNC side of the Project contains: Guzelyalı pumping station Gecitkoy Dam The Drinking water treatment plant Gecitkoy pumping station BENEFITS OF THE PROJECT: Domestic water supply Irrigation water supply Indsutrial water supply Energy production TRNC will be able to compensate for its projected water need for the next 50 years. The transmitted water will be used as drinking, industrial and irrigation water and will be a great contribution to the economic development of the region enabling irrigation of 4824 ha area.
