Cap and Gown Established 1891 Cap and Gown Club 61 Prospect Ave., Princeton NJ 08540 Fall 2005 Tel: (609) 258-0799 Fax: (609) 258-6422 [email protected] guished footballers among us). When I was an undergraduate in the early ’70s, we had a smattering of varsity athletes, but the rest of us were largely indifferent to their doings on the field. One of them, a very talented pitcher, has remained a close personal friend for over thirty years, and I have had to confess to him that Dear Members of Cap and Gown: I never saw him play. I believe the change started some It is other, more superficial traits that have distinguished one club time in the 1990s, but I can’t be more specific, nor can I explain from another, and those traits, as best I can determine them, will why it happened. But this much is certain: our club has shed its be the subject of this letter. “preppy” image (although many private school students still join), and Cap is now incontrovertibly a “jock” club, on both the The easiest observation, of course, is that our membership body male and female sides. We are not “dumb jocks”, however, as remains overwhelmingly male, and if deceased members are confirmed recently on Sports Illustrated’s website. In a short counted, even more so. This fact will change over time, and we feature about the eating clubs, SI characterized another club have even had some majority female sections. Beyond the demo- across the street as “the Animal House of the group” but was graphic platitude of overwhelming masculinity, I must venture content to describe Cap as “full [of] athletes as well.” (Two of into tradition and speculation, since hard data are hard to come our other competitors were noted primarily for the wealth of their by. members.) Chairman’s Letter Historically Princeton students have come from fairly privileged backgrounds, and eating club membership was out of the question for the less wealthy minority. Prospect Street self-selected for affluence, and within that group Cap and Gown tended to favor graduates of elite prep schools. So over the years Cap drew from the wealthier segment of the bicker pool, even if we never sought or attained the aura of privilege and exclusion acquired by at least one of our neighbors on the Street. With allowance for cheap labor in the early twentieth century, that our extraordinary clubhouse was originally built for only nineteen members tells us all we need to know about the bank accounts of our earliest members. In This Side of Paradise, F. Scott Fitzgerald’s fictional alter ego, Amory Blaine, observed with no apparent irony that in the nineteen-teens, Cap and Gown’s membership was “anti-alcoholic, faintly religious and politically powerful.” Readers may correct me, but I suspect that is the only recorded observation of temperance at Cap and Gown in the entire universe. And since Mr. Blaine, like his creator, joined the University Cottage Club, the reliability of his perception of our club is subject to question. On the other hand, maybe that’s why we had only nineteen members when we moved into our current building in 1908. Until quite recently, Cap and Gown was not known as a haven for athletes (although during the ‘50s we had quite a few distin- Kyle Whitaker ‘06 PU Track and Field, pole vault. There is another trait of Cap and Gown members that I have not seen discussed before. Within the Princeton community, we have not shown ourselves to be especially hungry for headlines. In a previous letter, I drew some flak for observing that Donald Rumsfeld ’54 had probably eclipsed Brooke Shields ’86 as our most well known member. With all due respect to Ms. Shields (whose career has had quite a bounce recently), that she reigned for fifteen years at the head of the Cap hit parade says something about our club. Returning to Princeton this September, it struck me how fast the past three years have passed. It seems like only yesterday that I arrived in Princeton without any idea what an eating club was. Since then, Cap and Gown has become a defining element of my Princeton experience. For years to come, all of us here at Cap will treasure the good food, great friends, and lasting memories we have shared during our time here. We are all grateful to be a part of such a lasting tradition, and I am especially excited to be serving as Cap’s president during my senior year at Princeton.
