Join us for a very special weekend at
Edenton Street!
We are thrilled to host Rev. Alan Storey
of South Africa for a full weekend of
teaching and learning. Alan will stretch
our insight of Christ and who He is in
scripture and in our lives as no one has
done before. You may recall Alan’s visit
in September when he and his former
intern (our own Lisa Yebuah!) sat down
for a conversation regarding Alan’s
faith journey. Lisa would go on to say
that Alan, more than any other, is the
person who helped shape her Biblical
imagination. Alan’s commitment to the
peacemaking Jesus was tested early in
his life when he faced conscription into
the apartheid regime’s military. After
spending a year of discernment working
as a laborer in Australia, he returned
to South Africa, declaring he would
never fight in the apartheid army – or
any army. He was arrested and faced
trial with a six-year prison sentence
as the likely outcome. Alan’s trial was
abandoned midway, and he became the
last conscientious objector to be tried
in apartheid South Africa. He is the son
of theologian Bishop Peter Storey who
served as chaplain to Nelson Mandela
and other political prisoners during his
time at Robben Island. Alan and Lisa met
during her time in South Africa as his
Duke Divinity school summer intern in
2003.
On his return to Edenton Street, Friday,
May 1 through Sunday, May 3, Alan will
lead us in a Manna and Mercy retreat.
This special retreat covers God’s story
and how it is OUR story. Alan will lead
us through the entire Bible in a way that
is engaging, fun, and very insightful! It
is for all regardless of where they are in
their faith journey and regardless of their
Biblical knowledge. The genius of this
amazing retreat is that everyone grows
deeper to Jesus; all participants are
welcome; all are challenged, inspired,
stretched, and included!
The weekend will include a Friday
evening session (6:30-8 p.m.); Saturday
session (8:30 a.m.-4 p.m.); and
concluding on Sunday morning (8:30-10
a.m.). Registration is available online at
esumc.org. The cost for this incredible
opportunity is $40 per person and will
include Friday dinner, Saturday lunch
and snacks.

The Child Development Center Celebrates
Week of the Young Child
The Child Development Center, along with the nation,
celebrates the Week of the Young Child on April 12–18. We
are busily preparing for the special activities we have planned
for the week. On Music Monday the children will participate
in a center-wide gross motor event as we celebrate music in
our world. Taco Tuesday finds us helping prepare our lunch.
This is also an opportunity to celebrate the diversity we find
in God’s great world. We practice the art of collaboration on
Work Together Wednesday as we build a box community on
our playground. Through this activity the children will learn
about ways that we can work together to make our community
better. On Artsy Thursday the children will participate in art
activities in their classrooms in the morning. For the last
month parents have been donating needed materials for the
Doorstep Ministry hygiene kits. In the afternoon the children
will sort items that we have been collecting and deliver them
to Ms. Amy. Through this activity the children are learning
about compassion and serving Christ by helping others. We
finish the week with a celebration of family and a Family
Picnic.
Needless to say, we are very excited about our preparations.
All are invited to celebrate with us. On behalf of the CDC we

Christ with us.

The story of Anne Frank, the young girl
who hid from the Nazis with her family
for two years in an Amsterdam attic,
has inspired millions since her diary
was first published 66 years ago.
The Triangle area’s newest chamber
choir, Una Voce (One Voice) will
present the North Carolina premier
of Annelies on April 19 at 4 p.m. in
the sanctuary of the historic Edenton
Street United Methodist Church under
the direction of Kevin B. Holland.
Joining the choir are Mary Elizabeth
Southworth – soprano, Rebekah
Binford – violin, Elizabeth Beilman –
cello, John Noel – piano and Marianne
Breneman – clarinet.
Haiti Benefit Concert
April 24
Former American Idol contestant
Majesty Rose will perform a benefit
concert on April 24 to help support
children at the Agape House, an
orphanage run by Together We Can
Haiti. ESUMC has been working with
Together We Can Haiti for the past
four years in the areas of community
development, agriculture, education
and orphan care. The concert will
be in Kerr Hall beginning at 7 p.m.

United Methodist Retirement Homes
provides financial aid to residents who
no longer have the resources to fully
pay for the services and care provided
to them. In order to gain a better
understanding of this ministry, consider
one resident recipient of benevolence
support whom we will call Mary Jane.
She has a medical condition that has
made her disabled and unable to care
for herself. She has lived in a room at
one of the UMRH healthcare centers
for more than twenty-three years.
Although Mary Jane has no biological
family, she does have a very close
family who love her dearly. That family
is the staff of the healthcare center. Her
small income and UMRH benevolence
support cover the cost of her care.

Vacation Bible School
Children’s Ministry Assistant
July 20-24
We are a dynamic ministry environment at Edenton Street
United Methodist Church that is shaping the future of the
Kingdom through Children’s ministry. We are in search of a
Children’s Ministry Assistant.
Summer is just around the corner and so is Vacation Bible
School! This year’s theme is Cokesbury’s “G-Force Adventure
Park” featuring all kinds of kid friendly action oriented
activities. But it’s not just the kids who will have fun. During
the week of July 20– 24, children ages four (by Aug. 31,
2015) through rising 5th graders are invited to participate in
interactive Bible stories, great music, discovery, cool crafts,
hands-on missions work, creative games & more!
Registration opened March 1 and will remain open until we

Volunteers are needed! If you are an adult volunteer, please
consider being a class leader, station leader or helper, helping
make decorations, providing refreshments etc. Volunteers

9th Annual Children and Youth
Music and Arts Camp
August 3-August 7
For rising 1st through 12th
graders
Children and Youth Music and Arts Camp is an exciting
opportunity for children and youth to grow in their faith
through music, drama, and art. The children and youth
are shown God’s love in a loving, supportive, Christian
environment by a caring group of individuals who give freely
of their time. Activities include: worship, storytelling, choir,
bell ringing, art, drama, rhythm and percussion, and creative
movement. (Set design and costuming are offered to middle
and high school students.)

Downtown Churches Habitat
Build
April 18
Working with other downtown churches, we will be building a
Habitat for Humanity house this spring. Building skills are not
required to participate. Our build dates are on the following
Saturdays: April 18 and May 16. Signup on the website.
The Children’s Ministry Assistant will assist in leading and
providing vision for our Children’s Ministry in a way that helps
children and parents become disciples of Jesus Christ for the
transformation of the world. The position will assist parents
in equipping their children to know, love, and follow Jesus
through biblical teaching and discipleship by using a chosen
curriculum in creative, challenging and age-appropriate ways.
The Children’s Ministry Assistant supports the Director of
Children and Parent Ministries in the day-to-day operations
of children’s ministries. This position will provide support
in leading and offering vision for our children’s ministry.
This position is part-time at 15 hours per week and must be
available to work on Sunday mornings.

Media Helpers:
One way the Media Team “Shares Christ from the Heart of
Raleigh” is by playing our traditional service on the local
Raleigh TV station. We are seeking volunteers to load the
TV DVD copy into the system at the TV station on a monthly
basis. It takes one hour of your day to load the DVD. You
will be fully trained. No prior experience or knowledge
