FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
EXTERA PUBLIC SCHOOLS’ 2ND ANNUAL BOYLE HEIGHTS HISTORY HIKE
SCHEDULED FOR SATURDAY, JUNE 6 – 9:00AM AT MARIACHI PLAZA
Students prepare for cultural festival and educational hike through historic Los Angeles neighborhood
(Boyle Heights, Los Angeles, CA) Third, fourth, fifth, and sixth graders at Extera Public Schools have
been hard at work preparing for the 2nd Annual Boyle Heights History Hike, which takes place on
Saturday, June 6. This walking cultural event celebrates the history, art, and culture of the historic
neighborhood of Boyle Heights, and will begin at 9:00am in Mariachi Plaza with a Zumba warm up.
Then, student-led groups will embark on a walking tour of the neighborhood, stopping at notable
community sites that are significant to the area’s history.
“Extera students will be turning each site into a living museum featuring student-created artworks that
explore themes of local history and community,” says David Rodriguez, one of the teachers responsible
for the creation of this event. “Our students have been involved in an Extera-created curriculum
encompassing local history, event planning, and art in conjunction with local artists, local business
leaders, as well as USC's department of history.”
The planned route, which will cover approximately 2.75 miles (with a shorter option available), begins
at Mariachi Plaza then moves East along 1st street, before it turns up to Ceasar Chavez Blvd. Along the
way, participants will stop at White Memorial Hospital, Candelas Guitars, the Breed Street Shul,
Homeboy Industries, and more. The hike will circle back, ending where it began, at Mariachi Plaza,
where there will be family-friendly activities, fun live performances, as well as booths featuring
representatives from community non-profits and businesses. Community businesses have stepped up to
help as well, with contributions from Revolution Foods, Primera Taza, Super King Markets,
Ralph’s/Food 4 Less, Vallarta Markets, and Jessica’s Market.
This event is free and open to the public. To learn more, visit the student-created event website at
