Final Exec Director ICMH Job Ad - Office of Faculty Affairs and
Position Announcement
Executive Director, Indiana Center for Musculoskeletal Health
Indiana University School of Medicine
The Indiana University School of Medicine (IUSM) seeks a visionary academic leader to serve as the
inaugural Executive Director of the Indiana Center for Musculoskeletal Health (ICMH). The successful
candidate will have a strong background in academic leadership, research, and teaching. Experience
should include evidence of building diverse collaborations and teams, innovative problem-solving,
strategic vision-setting and transformational leadership in academic medicine. Candidates should
possess an MD, PhD, or MD/PhD, and have a strong, active research program.
The Musculoskeletal disorders (MSD) research group at the Indiana University School of Medicine
(IUSM) is among the very top groups in the country and world. The group has steadily grown over the
past 20 years and currently includes over 40 investigators, distributed among the Schools of Medicine,
Engineering & Technology, Science, Dentistry, and Health & Rehabilitation Sciences. The investigators
have over $7.5 million in extramural funding, a recently awarded T32, and state of the art core-facilities.
The ICMH will capitalize on the group’s strengths in basic, clinical, and translational MSD research by
providing scientific, administrative, fiscal, space, and technology resources to bring the individually
successful MSD investigators together in synchronized pursuit of solutions to musculoskeletal disease.
The center will serve as a springboard from which to launch innovative, multidisciplinary, crosscollaborative approaches to musculoskeletal disease. It will provide a much-needed hub for attracting
high-impact recruits to complement the existing strengths of the current investigative team, and serve
as a nucleus for collaborative/institutional funding opportunities. Ultimately, the center is envisioned to
achieve a “destination” status for MSD patients seeking innovative therapies and cutting-edge
treatment.
Indiana is ranked among the top five states for both the total number of life science jobs (55,000 and
growing) and the number of life science companies (2,000 and growing). Bioscience products comprise
one-third of all Indiana exports and contribute more than $50 billion in annual value to Indiana’s
economy. Northern Indiana has the largest and most concentrated orthopedic medical device cluster in
the world. This area is second only to California in medical devices and captures one-third ($38 billion)
of the global orthopaedic market. Indianapolis-based Eli Lilly & Company boasts the world’s most robust
and successful osteoporosis drug program. Cook Biotech, located in West Lafayette, is a world leader in
connective tissue engineering and has a thriving research program and product lines in ligament,
tendon, and bone repair/regeneration. Roche Diagnostics, located in Indianapolis, has an active program
in bone turnover biomarker discovery and validation, and is one of the leading partners in the National
Bone Health Alliance’s (NBHA) bone biomarker standardization program. The Indiana musculoskeletal
science research group has established partnerships/collaborations with each of these entities, as well
as many others. These efforts are led by IUSM in collaboration with IU/IUPUI Schools of Dentistry,
Health and Rehabilitation Sciences, Nursing, Science, and other programs relevant to musculoskeletal
research including those at Purdue University with intent to seek funding from industry, federal agencies
(e.g., AHRQ, DOD, NIH, NSF), and other institutes (e.g., PCORI). The successful candidate should have
demonstrated experience in fostering collaboration and establishing efforts with partners to identify
and address unmet patient needs. In this role, there is great and unique opportunity to form important
collaborations between healthcare providers/practitioners, researchers and the medical device industry
to improve and advance patient care.
The Executive Director will report to the Executive Associate Dean for Research and establish a team
comprised of Associate Directors and support staff to achieve the following goals: 1) Establishing the
ICMH’s research and education priorities, 2) Holding scientific retreats to foster synergy and facilitate
interactions among ICMH investigators, 3) Holding technical training forums to provide understanding of
technical core capabilities and support training of personnel, 4) Supporting pilot research projects, 5)
Work with Office of Graduate Affairs to develop world-class training and education by fostering MS and
PhD degree programs focused on musculoskeletal research, and 6) Maintaining educational forums at IU
to foster and incentivize synergism among center investigators and maintain high level of knowledge
and visibility regarding musculoskeletal research.
The IUSM has nine campuses across the state, educating the nation’s second-largest medical student
body. Our clinical, research, and education partners (most within walking distance) include IU Health,
Eskenazi Health, and the Richard L. Roudebush VA Medical Center. The main campus is in Indianapolis,
the 12th largest city in the United States, which is growing and thriving economically due to a strong
corporate base anchored by the life sciences. The vibrant downtown is a bustling commercial center,
entertainment destination, and residential neighborhood. The expanding residential base is driven by
rich amenities and quality of life – the city is home to a variety of professional sports, arts venues and
outdoor recreation areas.
