Alan Pelaez Lopez ’15 Commitment to the Queer Undocumented Movement Majors: Sociology and English: Professional Writing Hometown: Waltham, Mass. “Most of Alan’s work has been grassroots. He has campaigned for undocumented persons all over the USA… He is recognized nationally for his advocacy work, and has conducted numerous workshops and trainings… He is a tireless advocate for severely marginalized members of our society and promotes social justice and human dignity on behalf of countless young people… He is truly inspirational.” Accomplishments and Participations: Recipient of the National Colin Higgins Youth Courage Award; Grant Recipient of the National Mario Savio Young Activist Award; Member of Phi Beta Kappa, Alpha Kappa Delta, and Sigma Tau Delta Honor Societies; Fellow at Young People For (YP4)-from People for the American Way; Cultural Organizing Artist at Culturestrike; Independent Poet and Writer; received certificate in LGBT Narrative Writing from VONA at the University of California, Berkeley, 2014 “In bringing Fairfield’s first chapter of Her Campus to life, Danielle… not only filled a void that was missing—a venue for young women to CREATE, write, and develop content—but also forever changed the lives of the 75 women who are active members of the organization… She is a true teacher committed to developing the skills of her team members.” Accomplishments and Participations: Co-founder and Editor-in-Chief of “Her Campus Fairfield”; Fairfield 2020 Steering Committee member; Fashion Relations Intern at Liberty Fairs Trade Show; Public Relations Intern at Grace Group; Editorial Intern Cosmopolitan.com; “Thought Catalog” contributing writer; will be employed as a production assistant at Cosmopolitan.com after graduation. KRAMER ’60 HUMANITARIAN AWARD Katherine Pitz ’15 Major: Mechanical Engineering Hometown: Lagrangeville, N.Y. “Katherine has learned to embody the Jesuit ideals, and has developed the skills to be a person for herself and others. This is proven through her volunteer work in Bolivia… She helped start a great Engineers Without Borders program on campus… She has participated in numerous clubs and activities, volunteered locally and internationally, engaged in research, and excelled in the classroom—all while participating in varsity athletics.” Accomplishments and Participations: Captain of the Women’s Rowing Team; Engineers Without Borders volunteer; American Society of Mechanical Engineers President; Society of Women Engineers Outreach Coordinator; Broadening Access to Science Education (BASE) Camp Counselor; Member of Pi Mu Epsilon and Tau Beta Phi Honor Societies; Student Research Assistant in Physics & Engineering; NASA Grant recipient; Marguerite F. Kramer ’60 Humanitarian Award recognizes one senior and is based solely on the senior’s commitment to volunteerism and service to an external community activity that best exemplifies the Ignatian tradition of being men and women for others, while also maintaining a commitment to high academic standards. This award is sponsored by Mr. and Mrs. James J. Daly P’93, ’92, ’85 in memory of their dear friend William J. Kramer ’60, P’96, ’85, ’83, the first Fairfield University alumnus who served as Chairman of the Fairfield University Board of Trustees. PAST RECIPIENTS ST. IGNATIUS LOYOLA MEDAL Instituted in 1952, the St. Ignatius Loyola Medal recognizes one senior who has committed himself or herself to the Jesuit education ideals of maintaining high academic standards and substantial involvement in community service and/or extracurricular activities. The senior should have clearly maximized opportunities for emotional, social, and intellectual growth throughout all four years on campus and best exemplifies the true spirit of a Jesuit education.
