OPEN DAY
There was a good turnout for the Open Day
with a real buzz in the Barrington as people
talked about the groups on offer and decided
which to sign up for.
Remember, we all have until early July to get
our forms in, but don’t put it off too long!

We have been advised of the deaths of two former
members.
Reverend Judith Henderson led the
Religion group, discussing alternative
religions.
Norman Measey led the current affairs group
and was also a committee member, and very
briefly, chairman in succession to Hazel. Gerry
will remember him as a keen member of his
wine appreciation group.
Judith was still a member in 2005/06 and
Norman must have been earlier. Both died in
February 2015.

MEMBER OF THE MONTH - This month’s member is Jenny Boyce who is a very enthusiastic
member of U3A ,and will be known to many people.
My name is Jenny Boyce and I joined U3A 5/6years ago. Although not fully retired I was cutting down my
working hours quite considerably and, as I am now on my own, thought it would be a good idea to take up
new interests. I am so pleased to have found U3A- over the years I have joined various groups such as
music appreciation, book club, film club, sociology, architecture appreciation, Discovering Dorset-not all at
the same time! It has been an excellent way of meeting people and I have made many friends along the
way.
I am really looking forward to receiving my new brochure and deciding which subjects to apply for next
term-especially those which involve getting out and about. Life is never dull that's for sure!

This is what Pat had to say about her adventure:
I am still coming down! It was a beautifully sunny day with a very strong winds. There were about 80 friends from
many walks of my life.
The views were wonderful, however the aircraft had a great time weaving up and down for far longer than I had
anticipated and the force of the wind left me reeling. When we eventually hit the ground I was reeling and like a
new born lamb. It really took about 8 hours for me to feel normal again {whatever normal is in my case}. It was a
great experience but the important thing was the charity. Thank you to everyone who sponsored me!
Would I do it again????? Well……NO!

BOOK REVIEW
Several of our members are ‘professional readers’, reviewing Crime, Thriller and Mystery novels, pre-publication, for
a range of publishing houses. We intend to include a review in each Newsletter and also to put more reviews on the
website. The reviewers are referred to by their ‘nom de plumes’, Smeagol and Pashtpaws.

Brilliant Teenager Gives Kidnappers a Torrid Time in Unusual Thriller
When Lisa Yyland goes missing near her home in Barnstead, New Hampshire, her family and the FBI fear the worst.
Not just because Lisa is sixteen years old but also because she is seven months pregnant. As she has hidden her
condition from everyone including her mother – a high profile trial lawyer – and her father – a former Navy Seal
turned physicist -- Lisa’s disappearance is initially put down to a runaway problem teenager. But Lisa is not just your
normal pregnant sixteen-year-old, she is “special.”
She is highly intelligent and has her own laboratory with high-tech equipment at home. But emotionally she is
unusual, in that she has “an internal switch” that she can turn off or on at any given moment to experience things
such as joy, fear, love. Lisa is highly capable of emotion but also exceptional at suppressing distraction and
unproductive thoughts.
Thus when she is kidnapped no more than twenty yards from her house, she is able to suppress her feelings of fear
and worry and begins to harness all her scientific abilities to analyse her situation and prepare for her escape. Little
did her kidnappers know what they had let themselves in for.
Shannon Kirk has written a superb no-holds-barred novel. The main character, Lisa, is an outstanding heroine with
whom the reader is able to empathise and support her unusual approach to captivity. FBI agents Lui and Lola, who
are appointed to investigate the case, are also well-defined and prominent characters.
This is an unusual novel where the quarry refuses to take a subservient role and the readers are presented with
scenarios where they may find themselves applauding at times the defensive barbarity of the victim. Not a book for
the squeamish!
Thoroughly recommended. – Sméagol.
