In 2014-15, Bray hit 34 3-pointers and averaged 12.7 points per game for Glenwood (15-16, 10-8) and received special mention by the IBCA. Bray made the CS8 non-city all-tournament team too. Cameron scored just a smidge under 10 points per game (9.9) for the Railers, who turned their program around with a 17-14 record (11-7 CS8) and a fourth-place finish in the CS8. Cameron was named to the CS8 noncity all-tourney team. Another rising star guard in the league, Griffin made 33 3-pointers and scored 10.6 points per game for the Lions, who finished 8-19 overall and 6-12 in the conference. The forward averaged 14.6 points per game for the 13-15 Spartans (8-10 CS8) and was rewarded for her hard work with thirdteam all-state mention by the IBCA. OLIVIA KAUFMANN MEAGAN MCNICHOLAS ANGELA PERRY MONTSHIANNA PULLIAM 5-6 Jr. Jacksonville 5-10 Jr. Rochester 6-2 So. Rochester 5-10 So. Springfield High This junior guard was a constant bright spot leading the league in scoring as well as free-throw shooting. Kaufmann received all-state mention by the AP and the Champaign News-Gazette (special mention). She also made the all-tournament team during the CS8 non-city Tournament in January. The Rockets’ swing player loved slashing her way to the hoop, which she did in 2014-15 to the tune of 8.2 points per game for the CS8 champions and 3A state title contenders. She also averaged 4.4 rebounds and made 99 of 146 free throws. McNicholas made the CS8 Non-City All-Tournament team. Perry scored 11.8 points and pulled down 6.3 rebounds per game. She also blocked 67 shots and nailed 80 of 123 attempts from the line. Perry garnered all-state attention from the AP (honorable mention), IBCA (third team) and the Champaign News-Gazette (honorable mention). She was named the Most Outstanding Player at the CS8 Non-City Tournament. Averaged 9.0 rebounds and 12.4 points per game for the CS8 runners up and was named to the IBCA’s all-state fourth team. LARYN SAPETTI KAYLIN TATE DEVON THAXTON KIERRA WEIR 5-9 Sr. Rochester 5-6 Sr. SHG 5-10 Sr. Eisenhower 5-9 Sr. Springfield High Led the Rockets (33-3) in scoring (13.4 ppg), assists (2.5) and steals (96) as they won the Central State Eight title and got all the way to the Class 3A state championship game. She earned all-state honors from the Associated Press (second team), the IBCA (second team) and the Champaign News-Gazette (special mention). Sapetti also was named to the CS8 Non-City All-Tournament team. The balanced Cyclones took third in the CS8 with a 14-4 mark in league games and went 19-7 overall. Tate, a forward, was a key cog in the machine, averaging 6.8 points and 5.4 rebounds per game for Sacred Heart-Griffin. One of the league’s most underrated players, the senior forward averaged 17.5 points and 9.2 rebounds for a Panthers squad that went 6-25 overall and just 3-15 in the league. Thaxton was named to the CS8 noncity all-tournament team in January and received honorable mention in the Champaign News-Gazette’s all-state package after the season. Weir averaged 15.2 points and 6.0 rebounds per game for the Senators, who finished 25-6 overall and 16-2 in the CS8. Weir made 35 3-pointers for the Senators. She was named to IBCA’s third team and received honorable mention on the both the AP and Champaign News-Gazette´s All-State packages. But Sapetti could sure score when she had to. She finished her basketball career in the Final Four at Redbird Arena in Normal the weekend of March 6 and 7. There, Sapetti poured in 21 points and had seven rebounds in a 71-60 semifinal victory over Chicago Bogan. She had 19 points and eight rebounds the following afternoon in the state championship game, a 47-37 loss to Morton. “She received a lot of attention (from opposing defenses) in the two games at state,” said Boudouris, “yet she played two of her better games of the season there.” Said Sapetti: “I can’t imagine two state games going any better for one particular player — except maybe for winning.” Getting to state was more than half the fun. The game many fans likely will remember the longest from the season was the sectional championship game, a rematch with No. 1-ranked Normal University High, which had narrowly defeated Rochester in a lateseason game. The postseason rematch was a game the Rockets’ players alternately dreaded and wanted. “After we lost the (regular season) game against Normal U High, we kinda knew,” said senior Lucy Nuding. “We had a bad taste in our mouths and we felt like we had something to prove for sure.” The Rockets’ hunger to prove themselves worked against them early. In their home gym the Rockets fell behind 3A’s top-ranked team 13-1 after one quarter. Boudouris said the 12-point deficit was the largest his team had faced all winter. After three quarters, Rochester still trailed the Pioneers by double digits. They had 8 minutes left and Sapetti, up to that point, was just 1-for-10 from the field. one play that Boudouris says will remain etched in his memory. “That whole fourth quarter is still a blur to me even though I’ve watched it a number of times,” the coach said. “There was a play where (Sapetti) hit a runner in traffic. Then, as she was backpedaling to play ‘D’ she kinda clapped her hands, but she never took her focus off the ball-handler coming up the floor.” That play tied the score and the Rockets went on to beat the Pioneers 40-39 thanks to a pair of last-second free throws by sophomore Angela Perry. But Perry’s heroics wouldn’t have been possible without Sapetti putting the team on her shoulders early in the fourth quarter. She scored when her team needed her to. “When I saw that determination from her,” Boudouris said, “I thought, ‘This is contagious. This is gonna spread to the other kids on the floor,’ and that’s what happened.” And that, folks, is the story that black numbers on white paper just won’t tell. From Page P27 All she wanted was what the Rockets almost got: a state title. Though Sapetti was the name fans and opponents were most familiar with, Rochester had a tough, balanced basketball team. Sapetti both fed and fed off that balance. She led the Rockets in scoring and in assists with 2.5 per game, in addition to recording a team-high 96 steals. Rockets girls coach J.R. Boudouris has a deeper appreciation for Sapetti’s all-round skills because he’s watched her develop as both a player and a leader. “You look at great teams — I don’t care what the level is — if you’ve got somebody who is leading your team in both (scoring and assists), then you’ve got not only a pretty dynamic player but somebody whose efforts are probably going to translate to team success as well,” Boudouris said. Sapetti led the Rockets in scoring in just under half their games. She scored a season-high 25 points twice and only had four 20-point nights. But scoring didn’t matter to her as evidenced Now or never “At that point it was do or die,” Sapetti said. “I knew if something didn’t happen soon, our season was going to end.” So Sapetti made stuff happen. She scored seven of her game-high 13 points during an 11-0 Rockets run that included a roof-raising 3-pointer, a key assist on a Sami Kearney layup and the — Contact Brian Webster, 788-1545, brian.webster@ sj-r.com, Twitter.com/ briweb69.
