FIFA U20s WORLD CUP
Uruguay U20s
The FIFA U20s matches being played in Dunedin will add spice to this years
winter football programme, when Mexico, Serbia, CAF2, Uruguay, Portugal, and
Columbia - entertain during 31st May - 6th June at the Otago Stadium.
Some tickets are still available, but if you have not already booked your
seat, you could miss out on one of the world’s major football events.
Lots of locals have put their hands up to participate as Volunteers for the
many roles required to stage a major event, and our target is to surpass the
splendid success of 1999, when Dunedin hosted the games in FIFA’s U17 World
Cup which was eventuall won by Brazil, edging out Australia in the Final.
See page 5, opposite, for a potted history of the 1999 FIFA U20s World
Cup matches held in Dunedin, and masterminded by former NZFA chairman Dave
Lamont who did a great job.
Yes, and 1999 was the year that Youth Tours first sprung out of Otago,
heading for Kuala Lumpur, Argentina, Chile, Fiji, Vanuatu, Singapore, and
eventually under the auspices of Football Otago Youth Development Tours began
the Milk Cup tournament adventures to Northern Ireland which proceed this year
with a continuous entry into that prestigious tourney which gives young kiwis the
chance to play against top teams such as Manchester United and professional
youth sides from Europe and the Americas.
FIFA President Joseph S. Blatter said: “New Zealand hosted the FIFA
U-17 World Cup in 1999 and the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup in 2008 and
enjoys a proud history of successfully hosting FIFA events.
Bringing the FIFA U-20 World Cup to this sports-loving country will for
sure enhanceCurtis
the image and popularity of the beautiful game in New Zealand.”

CEO Andy Martin covering the last 12 Months
It was another very strong year for our community football programme as
we enjoyed continued growth in participation numbers at grassroots level, another
year of experience and progression under the Whole of Football Plan, and yet
another period of rapid growth for futsal under New Zealand Football guidance.
At the top end of the domestic game the ASB Premiership saw the
introduction of the Wellington Phoenix and with only one round left in the minor
premiership, the competition is extremely tight with the last two semi-final places
set to be decided only in the final round of the
league. New regulations
regarding safeguarding berths for New
Zealand players were brought
in as we moved to secure the
domestic pathway for our
emerging talent towards the
international arena.
The development of
the game at the highest
domestic levels around
the country was also
reflected in the
ASB Women’s and
Youth League
competitions with
Mainland Football
and the Nelson
Marlborough Falcons
shining through
over the course of their
competitions
while Mainland Futsal’s
triumph in the
National Futsal League
was another first
for the game.
In the elite game we
appointed a new coach for
the All Whites and Anthony
Hudson has hit the ground
running in the execution of his
detailed approach to securing a
berth for New Zealand at the 2018
FIFA World Cup in Russia.
The Football Ferns continued to ramp up their preparations for the FIFA
Women’s World Cup later this year in Canada and the 2016 Olympic Games in
Rio as Tony Readings and his team set about their task of achieving history for
our country at the biggest events on the calendar.
Our international women’s age-group sides were on the world stage with
the U-17 and U-20 teams in action at their World Cup events, with the U-20 side
raising the bar by earning a place in the knockout stages for the first time in our
history while the Men’s U-17s secured their berth in their age-group World Cup
event later this year.
The international success of Auckland City FC at the FIFA Club World
Cup in December gave us wonderful example of how football can captivate the
nation while the strong showing of the Wellington Phoenix in this year’s A-League
competition provides further fuel for our growing fire.
Our focus will be firmly on executing on the Beyond Football plan – to
reposition football – to win at World Cups often, to inspire the nation and to see
http://www.footballsouth.co.nz/
Page 6
the game, our global game, become a leading sporting diplomacy tool for the country.
March will see the launch of a new national coaching register with a two-year
amnesty to establish who our best coaches are, where they are and how we can
develop them to inspire our coming generations at all levels.
Mid-year, the creation and consultation around a refreshed blueprint for our
national competitions structure is a vital piece of work as we aim to hit on the winning
formula for our domestic game which will provide stable, sustainable products which
appeal to everyone with an interest in this critical step of our pathway; from players and
supporters through to sponsors and broadcasters.
For our headline acts; the All Whites and Football Ferns, 2015 is a year of
http://www.footballsouth.co.nz/
differing ambitions.
There is a clearlyhttp://www.footballsouth.co.nz/
articulated plan for the All Whites to get to Russia in 2018
and the next 12 months will see Anthony Hudson continue to determine his squad, build
contact time and set the processes, culture and expectations ahead of a critical 2016
year of qualification. As part of this approach we will see a fully aligned Olympic squad
as well as our U-20 team aiming to do the country proud in our home World Cup event.
For Tony Readings and the Football Ferns, the FIFA Women’s World Cup in
Canada in June has long been a target and after a full programme of preparation the
team will being going all out to win the showcase tournament .
Finally, I can assure you that we will have the best prepared New Zealand U-20
team ever as they tackle the challenge of FIFA U-20 World Cup in May. Our coaches
Darren and Neil will be fully supported by Anthony and Alex Armstrong and the
preparations are tracking well on and off the field. What happens once the whistle
blows is always difficult to predict but, with each and every one of you helping to fill the
stadium every time we play, we will have the passionate support we need as we push
for history on home soil.

A sad start to the year, as the club lost a stalwart in
George Little, who died recently in his native Scotland.
Geordie was one of the Little family that played
with distinction for Northern and Otago - earning two
Chatham Cup medals, as well as being a doughty
Administrator both for the club, of which he was a Life
Member, and also at regional level as Chairman of the
Otago Football Association. RIP.

Girls finished the tournament on 3 wins, 2 draws and 2 losses. They finished 6th
which was a pretty good effort for such a young side, we knew they would be up
against strong sides but they did themselves and us proud. Congratulations to

2015. These girls are only
going to get better and more experienced so watch out
2016.
The boys were in the “pool of death”. There were four pools of six teams each.
From our pool all six teams made a quarter final in the Championship, Bowl or
Plate playoffs and five progressed to semi-finals and one, Birkenhead won the
tournament. The boys played really competitive football and although losing 5
games and winning 2 it doesn’t really reflect the way they played. 4 of our losses
were 1-0 so the boys were right up there. cheers, Debbie.

The new Club Lounge development is due to start at

success on the field.
As far as pre season went, had a run against Selwyn
from Christchurch 3 -2 down with a mixture of the 1st
two squads, and our 2nds played Balclutha in the
weekend and won 3 nil I think, not a bad game
Balclutha were alright too.
Players lost ..... Cody working Christchurch, Rutter
resting his body, Liam playing for Selwyn. Some
others new and old back at the club and will get info
about them when I see them next.
Ollie is from Christchurch, Bob from Northern and
David from Invercargill , all others you should know

Newmarket Park Reborn
Football fans who fondly remember when Newmarket Park was the sport’s Auckland
headquarters held a reunion BBQ at the ground recently on Sunday March 15.
The ground, which hosted some of the world’s greatest footballers, was
devastated by a landslide in 1979 after being the local home of football since 1964.
It’s now a pleasant, family-friendly park after a $6.7 million rehabilitation
programme by the Auckland Council.
The independent supporters group Friends of Football decided to host Sunday’s
BBQ to give football fans the chance to meet up and
share their memories of when Newmarket Park was in its heyday.
Guests at the BBQ with tales to tell about Newmarket Park’s greatest moments
will include former All Whites Brian Turner, who played many of his 59 full internationals
there, and Sam Malcolmson who recalls playing in the last international at the ground (in
which New Zealand beat Australia 1-0).
Another player keen to share her memories will be Barbara Cox, who was the
captain of the first New Zealand women’s team and who
played in the first-ever Auckland representative match at the park in 1973.
Journalist Josh Easby edited match programmes at Newmarket Park in the mid1970s when the ground hosted such high-profile teams as
Manchester United, Glasgow Rangers, Tottenham Hotspur, Wolverhampton Wanderers,
Juventus, Stoke City, Hertha Berlin, Middlesbrough
and others.
“We plan to show people around the park and remind them of what it looked like
when World Cup winners like Bobby Charlton, Geoff Hurst and Gordon Banks played
there,” he says.
The park also hosted five Chatham Cup finals as well as World Cup qualifying
games during the 1970s.
“Everyone’s welcome at the BBQ, whether they have a few memories of their own
they want to share . or whether they just want to chuck a couple of jerseys on the ground
and kick a ball about on what used to be one of the great grounds,” Morris said.

The BIG event for 2015 – the FIFA U20 Men’s World Cup Finals in 7 venues around
NZ - is just around the corner, with the first double header at the Stadium on Sunday
May 31st. Have you bought your tickets yet? I hear that Dunedin is lagging behind
in the ticket selling stakes – behind such “metropolises” as Whangarei and New
Plymouth.
We have such a mouth-watering Group D with Mexico, Uruguay, Serbia and
2nd placed African Team plus a Group C Portugal vs Columbia thrown in - that there
really is no excuse not to buy tickets and enjoy the World Cup Experience.
I know of some families coming from around the federation and spending the
whole of that first week in Dunedin to take in the 3 double headers at the Stadium.
Football South wishes the Local Organising Committee and its large team of
volunteers in Dunedin led by Aaron Joy, all the best with their preparations and running
of the event.
The U20s is being used as an important vehicle for the Leverage & Legacy
Plan for growing the game in NZ. The focus will be on Youth with increased
participation being encouraged through schools and clubs and Futsal being given
specific attention. Increased diversity is also being encouraged through fostering a
welcoming culture to different ethnic groups. The tournament can also be a catalyst for
improved facilities in Dunedin & Football South, with an All-weather surface within
a Home of Football complex part of our longer term vision. The four sets of training
pitch box goals will be welcome additions for local strikers to aim at after the
tournament is over.
Southern Utd has had a tough season results wise, but they remain a
valuable part of the pathway for our talented younger players. There is some great
work being done through the Federation Talent Centres, Milk Cup and United
Youth teams. The coaches and the players need the incentives provided by a team
competing in the National League. Players aspire to be the best they can be. Some
do head off for the chance of professional football overseas or with the Phoenix before
even playing for United, But the pathway & opportunity is still there. Thanks to Southern
Utd and all those involved.
On the local Grassroots scene – a special plea for Supporting Positive
Sideline Behaviour!! – for all those enthusiastic parents, friends, relatives,
supporters whether at junior level “Let Success Be Your Child’s Dream Not Yours” or
at senior level where “Abuse of referees is a major deterrent for recruitment &
retention”. So that all participants can Enjoy the Games & Have Fun

Mosgiel Squad 2015
After a reasonable season in
2014 finishing 4th, we
reviewed our strenghths and
weaknesses...
One thing we found was we
had conceded more goals
than we had scored.
Using this as the
catalyst for our overall
performances we decided it
was important to strenghthen
our defence. We recruited
Zane Green
well and added some quality
players in this area.
Coming in is Tom Cairns ( Queenstown Rovers ), Michael Bu ( Cashmere
Tech ) and stepping up are a couple of qualty youngsters in Tom Kindley and
Hamish Cotter.
Also having struggled with depth when hit by injuries it was important to
look at other areas. We recruited quality in Isaac Snell ( Glenfield Rovers ), Ifane
( Varsity ) both of whom have large amounts of flair and the ability to play in
either the midfield or up front.
Last but by no means least was the capturing of signatures from Zane

Eder has already
shown his quality during the National League Season,
http://www.footballsouth.co.nz/
having picked up an injury
that he has now recovered from, I believe the best of
his ability is still to come.
With South American flair , and a range of of skills to match he will surely
be the ROCKSTAR of the premier league. We are looking forward to 2015 and
welcome all our new players and wish them all the best.

FIFA badge, the Target for Berg
Aspiring referee Calvin Berg can’t wait for the FIFA under 20 World Cup tournament to
start. Berg who originates from Dallas, Texas started reffing his younger brother’s junior
games when he was just 13 years old. Fast forward eight years on and the relocated
Dunedin referee is a regular assistant referee and 4th official in the ASB Premiership with
his sights set on refereeing New Zealand’s best players in the near future. After that goal is
achieved he would love to qualify as a FIFA referee and officiate in International
tournaments.
“I see my knowledge of the Laws of the Game
as one of my strengths plus having a good rapport with
players and coaches is something I’m constantly
working on. I think my base fitness is pretty high “ Berg
stated.
“I believe there’s a real camaraderie amongst
the refereeing fraternity. You can certainly make some
good friendships while getting the best seat in the house
for a game you are passionate about. “ he added.
there are heaps of clear cut opportunities for new refs
to quickly climb the
ladder, whether
male or female. “
Football South is
always looking for
potential new refs.

Premier League Champions
On the back of a threat to its very existence the
Caversham Football Club exceeded all
expectations by not only finishing as Premier League
champions but also securing the Division One title in
emphatic style.
The club now begins its title defense with the
added pressure of a target square on its back,
something this club tends to relish.
There are a number of young & fresh faces to
complement some of the old guard who have
served this club so well. To create a competitive and
ever improving dynamic within the team
it is essential these boy’s push for starting spots.
Keep an eye out for some of the “Ins” listed
below as they will no doubt impress throughout the
season.
A familiar face in Big Benjudah Fitzpatrick is
back at the club this season having returned
Joel
home from a year hiatus in Australia. He will no
Head Coach: Tim Horner doubt be looking to make up for lost time and
his added experience will be vital to the squad.
Assistant Coach:
Fortunately the club has not lost too many familiar
Richard Murray
names from its 2014 squad. There is
Manager/s: Neil Birch,
special mention as the club farewells one of its long
Bruce Hicks
servants in Simon Ward who has taken
his first steps into the real world having moved on from University.
Liam Little has stepped off the train for a season to take a crack at
Australia and we wish him
the very best of luck.

Football South Referees
March
2015
Newsletter
With the season just about to start I’d like to give a warm
welcome to new Football South referee’s transferring into the
region and congratulate our existing refs who have been blowing out
the cobwebs by officiating in a few pre season friendlies.
New Referee’s transferred into the FS region this season include
the following:
Francois Cuccurullo to Dunedin (from Capital Football)
Mohammed Al Saleh to Dunedin ( from Mainland Football)
Mike Beeby transferred to Balclutha (Mainland)
Cameron Duff to Cromwell ( from Mainland )
Also coming on board is a number of recently trained Refs who have indicated
they are keen to start reffing competitive matches.
Simon Morris, Bruce Ryder, Peter-Rae Moroney, and Terri Lo
Back on deck this season is Kevin Smith, while a group of around five Balclutha refs
have indicated their keen to start reffing occasional games in Dunedin. Club based
Level one ref Greg Glendining should also take charge of a number of matches
during the season.
Refs Pre Season Workshop
The annual pre season workshop was held on Saturday 14th March at the
Otago Institute of Sport at Logan Park. NZF Refs Development Manager Ken Wallace
came down to present at the workshop.
During the day we went over the following topics:
Laws of the Game Update. There have been no major changes to LOTG this
season. Only some fine tuning to Law 4 Player’s equipment – which now reads; the
basic compulsory equipment ( the playing strip a player wears ) must not have any
political, religious, personal slogans, statements or images.
The above message is repeated – that undergarments must not show political,
religious, personal slogans, statements or images or advertising. (Other than the
manufacturer's logo.)
Southland based assessor and Chairman of the
Federation Refs committee Terry McNamara gave a
presentation on match officials working as a team and the
importance of communication and also spoke about
assessors expectation’s of a referee in a match.
Before the lunch break Back in Motion physio
Choon-Wi Cheang ( Cheuy ) ran the refs through a
practical FIFA 11+ warm up session. While after lunch
Ken Wallace presented a theory session in relation to
DOGSO. (denying obvious goal scoring opportunity).
Ken Wallace
After Ken’s session we all headed outside to put the
http://www.footballsouth.co.nz/
Page 28
theory into practise when we ran simulated live
2014 Futsal South
attacking phases of play with Youth players. The
session was videoed and after 3 or 4 different
phases of play we watched the video replays to
review the ref’s positioning when incidents
occurred , his communication with the assistant
referee, and his decision making process. These
practical sessions provide one of the most useful
training activities in the development of a referee.
National League Programmes
During the summer our aspiring referees
Simon Morris
have been busy refereeing our top players in the
ASB Premiership, Women’s League and ASB Youth League. Congrats to all Ref’s
and assessors who participated in the matches and also thanks to National League
Refs coach Brent Best for his time coaching the refs during the summer months.
FIFA under 20’s
In just a few short months the biggest and
best Football tournament to ever hit New Zealand
will start. Dunedin had some luck in the draw with
the following Countries scheduled to play at the
Stadium.
Group D: Mexico, Uruguay, Serbia and the fourth
placed African qualifier.
There will also be a group match between Portugal
and Columbia and a last sixteen knock out fixture.
Edward Cook
Alot of football fans came out of the
woodwork in 1999 to watch the FIFA U17 games
http://www.footballsouth.co.nz/
and support the tournament.
Football will be first and centre when the tournament is
http://www.footballsouth.co.nz/
being played out and many
former players, coaches, refs etc will be watching the
games and discussing the action over the water cooler at work.
There’s a high chance people ‘s interest in football will be re-energized
during the tournament and I would request football people who come in contact with
potential new refs contact me so I can communicate directly with them to gauge
their interest and discuss
appropriate refereeing
opportunities that may
exist.

It also settles the issue of possible compensation from FIFA for moving the
2022 World Cup in Qatar to November-December.
FIFA said the working accord " extending one which expired last year "
gives the ECA more involvement in other decisions affecting club football.
"We are taking a huge step forward in promoting relations between FIFA
and the clubs in a spirit of mutual and constructive cooperation," FIFA President
Sepp Blatter said in a statement.
Clubs receive money on a daily rate for as long as players are on national
team duty and involved in a
tournament.
The new accord also
extends a FIFA insurance program
which pays the club salary of
players injured while with national
teams. That project cost FIFA $88
million in the last four-year World
Cup cycle. UEFA is playing 150
million euros ($160 million) to
clubs for releasing players to the
2016 European Championship.
