President`s Message - Pearl Harbor
VOLUME 30 NUMBER 1 JANUARY 2015 - MARCH 2015 BRANCH 46 NEWS President’s Message Fellow Marines, Shipmates, and Friends of the FRA, CONTACT US: PEARL HARBOR-HONOLULU BRANCH 46 FLEET RESERVE ASSOCIATION 891 VALKENBURGH STREET HONOLULU, HI 96818 Aloha and welcome to 2015! First, we continue to solicit donations so we can secure our Branch’s home OFFICE: (808) 422-2121 location for future Shipmates. We have requested a 10 BRANCH: [email protected] ENTERPRISE: [email protected] -year extension from the Navy and will run an article LOUNGE: [email protected] in February’s FRAtoday magazine. To all Shipmates WEB: www.FRABranch46.org and friends who have already contributed, I give you a big MAHALO! Check out the list of donors in this newsletter. I hope to see YOUR name on the list in the next edition. RECRUIT. RECRUIT. RECRUIT. Our legislative efforts are critical as the active duty and retired military’s benefits and allowances are being CUT by Capitol Hill. The more members we have, the more influence we have in D.C. and the more successful we are protecting OUR benefits and allowances. It is up to you, Shipmates, to tell people about the FRA so they can join up and sustain our successful legislative efforts! I, on behalf of the Board of Directors, want to thank Shipmate Ed Lockwood publicly for stepping up to be our interim Lounge Manager and for all the support he’s given us over the years. He sacrificed a lot of his time and sanity to keep us going when we needed it the most, and no doubt he will be invaluable to our new Lounge Manager, Antony White, when he takes over in January. BRAVO ZULU, shipmate! We’ve hosted a couple of significant events since my last message to you. We hosted FRA National President John Ippert and the LAFRA National President Doris Fri in December, making office calls with sea-service commanders and attending Dec 7th ceremonies at the Arizona, Pearl Harbor, Hawaii Submarine Vet Memorial and Ewa Field at Barber’s Point. Special thanks to PRPNW Noel Bragg for setting up the office calls and providing the bulk of chaperone duties. Our Thanksgiving and Christmas dinners also went well, and we had plenty of food and Christmas joy to go around. Many thanks to Ed Lockwood, Lauren Wynn, Glenn and Renee Shaw, Noel Bragg, Susan Wehrman, Ollie Tucker, Glenn and Alexis Stang, Dan DelMonte, Lady Kiddy DeCoster, FRA NP John and Marjorie Ippert, Lady Laura Hood, Jackie Craig, Chris Shott, Russ Cromley, Morris Nguyen, Jordon Wynn and Kealohi Kepa for their wonderful support. Upcoming noteworthy events include our General Assembly Meeting for ALL branch members on the 2nd Wednesday of each month at 1800, and don’t forget the NFL Superbowl Party in the Lounge on February 1st! We will have a HUGE food spread, drink specials, and plenty of giveaways! Remember to check the Events Calendar and bulletins posted in the branch home to get the scoop on many special events. Yours in Loyalty, Protection and Service, - J.J. Wynn From the Chaplain’s Pen Aloha Shipmates, Auxiliary and Friends of the FRA, 2014 is nearing its end. Looking back is the time for evaluation. Have the goals we have set for ourselves been accomplished? Did we fall short, and some need more time? Setting goals can be risky. Sometimes the goals we set are too lofty and simply too difficult to reach. The goals that we set for 2015 should be carefully thought out, reasonable and reachable. Don’t confuse goals that you set with New Year’s resolutions. Why? New Year’s resolutions are usually broken by the middle of January. I wish you all a belated Merry Christmas and a healthy, prosperous, wonderful 2015. God Bless, Rev. Ollie Tucker Branch 46 in the News ABOVE:: Pearl Harbor Survivor, Chief Edward Borucki, joins the “Save Branch 46” campaign during his annual visit to Honolulu. While going through our records, I notice that the FRA Branch 46 members listed below have expired recently. As you may know, members of Congress are affected by numbers. Our numbers have been decreasing, and we sure could use your help in having a louder voice in Congress. If this is an oversight, I look forward to seeing your renewal. You can renew on-line at www.fra.org. Just click on the “Pay Dues” link on your “Welcome” screen after you log in, or call our toll free number, 1-800-FRA-1924, and we will be glad to assist you. If you are not renewing for some other reason, I sure would like the opportunity to help us work it out. I will do my best to resolve any issue that you may have. If, in the final analysis, you decide that you do not wish to renew, then I would just like to say that it’s been a pleasure having you and I wish you well in all of your future endeavors. John D. Ippert National President The following shipmates’ membership expired on 10/31 or 11/30 or will expire on 12/31/2014. If you have already renewed, please disregard this notice. Joseph G. It’s been a wonderful year and we are looking forward to all of the good things 2015 has in store. We had wonderful celebrations of both Thanksgiving and Christmas at the Branch Home. Thank you to all of the auxiliary members and shipmates who donated their time and talents to make it a success. Our annual Toys for Tots donation boxes provided dozens of toys to local children this year. Thank you to all of the “Secret Santas” who donated. I’m sure the recipients were thrilled to have such wonderful gifts! Please mark your calendars for the January - February birthday luncheon, which will be held on the last Friday of January (30th). Lunch costs $10 per person and will be served at noon. Please bring a gift to get a gift! Note that we have gone back to a bi-monthly luncheon, instead of quarterly, so we will have the March - April birthday luncheon on the last Friday of March (27th). We hope you will attend and bring a friend! RECRUIT. RECRUIT. RECRUIT. Just as the shipmates need members to keep the organization vital and thriving, so do we! Do you know a spouse, child, grandchild, mother or sibling of a Navy, Marine Corps or Coast Guard member? If so, invite them to come and join us! Don’t forget our General Assembly meeting is the second Wednesday of each month. We enjoy a lovely dinner beforehand (6pm) and then set about our charitable work during our meeting (7pm). Many of our current members are sorely missed at our monthly meetings. We are looking to expand our reach and impact on the veteran community in the coming year. Won’t you please come out and be a part of our efforts? In Loyalty, Protection & Service, Lauren A.
