Reading Comprehension
Read very carefully through the following passage and then answer the questions.
The Japanese are great sports lovers. Their traditional sports are sumo and judo. Base ball is
now regarded as the national sport. Whole families tend to spend a day out watching a game,
so children are familiarized with it from an early age. In soccer, too, Japan was good enough to
qualify for the World Cup in France.
Sumo: Sumo is a kind of wrestling in which two contestants wearing only Ioin cloth meet on
the earthen ring. It is used to be connected with agricultural ceremonies but now it is enjoyed
purely as a sport.
Judo: Judo was established as a form of mental training as well as a sport in the early part of
the Meiji era (1868-1912). It then attracted the attention internationally and is now an official
event at the Olympic games.
Base ball: Baseball is said to have the largest sporting population in Japan, with a flourishing
Little League and High School Baseball.
Soccer: Soccer has enjoyed popularity in the recent years. 1993 saw the launch of the
J.League, Japan’s first ever professional soccer league.
