THE FILTER PRESS
The official publication of the Georgia Section of
the American Chemical Society, serving the 31
counties encompassed by the Section. Its purpose
is to:
 inform the Section’s members of the actions of
the Section’s Executive Committee and its
subordinate Committees;
 announce future events sponsored by the
Section, and report on these events after they
occur, to the Section’s members;
 provide a forum for individual members to
contribute articles relevant to the ACS Divisions
to which they belong;
 provide a forum for individual members to
express their opinions and share information
about their professional achievements;
 Provide a forum for individual members to
share information about their employing
organizations.

Chemists Celebrate Earth Day (CCED)
Earth Day @ Georgia Tech
2015 April 17/ 10:00am – 3:00pm at Tech Walk
The theme of the 2015 ACS Chemists Celebrate
Earth Day (CCED) is "Climate Science – More
Than Just A Weather Report!" More information
can be found at the ACS CCED Website.
The annual Earth Day celebration at Georgia Tech
includes 70+ exhibitors, one of which will be an
ACS booth sponsored by the Georgia Section and
manned by volunteer chemistry students from the
Georgia Tech student chapter. Interactive
demonstrations and activities related to the CCED
theme "Climate Science – More Than Just A
Weather Report!" will be offered, along with free
Earth Day souvenirs.
If you would like to host a CCED booth at an Earth
Day event at your university, school, or
community, contact David Gottfried
([email protected]) who can provide
resources and materials.
As part of our Earth Day 2015 activities, the
Georgia Section will participate once again in the
ACS Chemists Celebrate Earth Day (CCED)
Illustrated Poem contest. This contest is open to
any K-12 student in the Georgia Section. Prizes
will be awarded for winners, and these winners
will also be entered into the national contest.
You can download the contest announcement and
the entry form.
Please forward this information to your schools,
teachers, scout groups, etc. Deadline for entry
is April 17, 2015 and more details are provided
in the announcement.

Gwinnett Science & Engineering Fair
2015 February 27 at Gwinnett Center
This year’s theme - “Motivating the Next
Generation of Science and Engineering Leadersfrom Classroom to Career” - gives students an
opportunity to exhibit their work and discuss their
discoveries with volunteer judges who are experts
in their field, and compete for a variety of special
awards and prizes.
Students who are awarded 1st place in their local
school science fair are eligible to participate in
the Gwinnett Regional Science and Engineering
Fair. From there, first place winners from the
Regional Fair are eligible to participate in the
Georgia State Science & Engineering Fair held at
UGA in Athens, GA. In addition, three select
projects will directly advance to the prestigious
Intel® International Science Fair in Pittsburgh,
PA.

 Appointments
Jennifer S. Knaack has been appointed to the
Membership Committee of ACS’s Analytical
Division. Knaack is Director, Center for HighComplexity Diagnostics, Mercer University;
Assistant Professor, Pharmaceutical Sciences
College of Pharmacy, Mercer University, and 2015
Chair-Elect of the Georgia Section.
 Awards & honors
Reesheda Gilbert received the Overcoming
Challenges Award from the Women Chemists’
Committee at the fall 2014 ACS national meeting
in San Francisco. (Photo and announcement in
Chemical & Engineering News, 23 February 2015,
p. 49). This Award recognizes a female
undergraduate for her efforts in overcoming
hardship to achieve success in chemistry. One
award is offered annually. The awardee receives
a monetary prize of $250 and up to $1,000 for
travel expenses to attend the ACS Fall National
Meeting. The awardee is presented with a plaque
and recognized at the WCC Luncheon at the fall
meeting. Gilbert is a senior biochemistry major
at Kennesaw State University. Learn more about

Jamie L. Graham was one of five recipients of
the Georgia Bio Community Award. Each year,
Georgia Bio recognizes individuals, companies and
organizations for significant contributions to
Georgia’s life sciences industry with its Georgia
Bio Community Awards. The recipients were
honored at the Annual Awards Dinner January 22
at Atlanta’s Fox Theater. Graham is a Partner at
Kilpatrick Townsend & Stockton LLP. See

Section at this event.

Linda Marquez was recognized by the Georgia
Section as our 2015 Outreach Volunteer of the
Year. This award is offered by ACS’s Committee
on Community Affairs (CCA). Learn more about it
at Local Section Outreach Volunteers of the Year.

works with various major chemical companies
who have innovated technology that they would
like to introduce to R&D/Technical Groups of
major coatings companies for incorporation into
next-generation paints and coatings.
Marquez has an M.S. in Physical Chemistry from
the University of California/ Riverside, an EMBA
from the Claremont Graduate School/Peter
Drucker Center, and also did post graduate work
at the London Business School in predicting and
affecting a global industry’s direction and
strategies.
Over the last several years, Marquez has been a
judge at various student fairs for Fulton County
and was also a judge at a past Nuclear conference
held at Georgia Tech. She is impressed with the
depth of knowledge and creativity of the next
generation of scientists, so enjoys the opportunity
to mentor by providing suggestions after being
exposed to their very interesting science
projects.

Linda on a business trip to Taiwan
Marquez is retired from PPG and is a past
Technical Director in the USA and in Europe
for major global coatings companies, where she
was also a past VP Worldwide Marketing.
Currently she is doing consulting in the areas of
corrosion control/asset preservation across
industries such as pipelines, infrastructure,
marine, and power including nuclear. In fact, she
served as a consultant for the original EPRI
[Electric Power Research Institute] study done at
the request of the NRC [Nuclear Regulatory

William C. Walker, 93, died on 28 October 2014
in Stone Mountain. (Photo and obituary in
Chemical & Engineering News, 9 February 2015,
p. 35). He was an emeritus 70-year ACS member,
receiving that award at the Georgia Section’s
Herty Award Banquet in September 2013.
