Education and Interpretation Officer

Working under the direction of the Museum Curator, the Education and Interpretation Officer is primarily
responsible for greeting visitors, providing guided tours to visitors, scheduling and conducting group
tours, collecting admissions, and gift shop sales. The Education and Interpretation Officer will also assist
in a variety of day-to-day museum activities, including planning and implementing public programming
and special events, as well as participating in collections management, operating the miniature railway
attraction, and maintaining and managing the “Overnight in a Caboose” program’s facilities, newly
available to the public. Bilingualism is considered an asset.
Responsibilities:
• Opening and closing of the museum
• Greeting and providing guided tours to visitors and groups
• Collecting admissions/greeting visitors
• Deliver lively, effective demonstrations on railway history and technology.
• Identify different audiences and adapt guided tours to suit their specific needs and interests.
• Assist in the development of interpretive programming that educates the visitor and meets the mandate
of the museum.
• Answering questions concerning the history of railways in Canada.
• Maintaining gift shop.
• Assists with set-up for rentals, special events, and programs
• Maintaining the cleanliness of the site and its facilities
• Provide site security for program needs
• Position requires working weekends and some evenings.
• Performs other duties as assigned by the Curator
Qualifications:
• Must have been a full-time student in the last school year with plans to return to full-time studies in the
Fall.
• Studying Museology, History or Education.
• Student with an interest in history and/or tourism industry
• Experience working with children, youth, adults, and seniors.
• Previous experience guiding tours is an asset.
• Customer service training/experience.
• Retail experience is an asset.
• Mature, assertive and self-motivated
• Outgoing, approachable, and friendly
• Ability to take initiative and work well independently.
• Excellent organizational and multi-tasking skills
• Readily adaptable to meet the situation at hand.
• Bilingualism is an asset.
