The Luiss Summer School aims at providing professionals, government officials, international civil servants,
financial consultants, scholars and students with a comprehensive and in-depth understanding of the legal
and economic implications of the most relevant and up-to-date issues of international trade, both through
high-level lectures and professionalizing training.
The Summer School combines high-level lectures and professionalizing training given by world-class
professors, WTO and EU officers, public administration managers and experts from the private sector
operating in the international markets.
This intensive summer course is organised with the patronage of The European Commission Representation
in Italy, the Italian Ministry of Economic Development, CONFINDUSTRIA (Confederation of the Italian
Manufacturing Industries), Bar Association of Rome (Ordine degli Avvocati di Roma), SACE and Simest.
Program
The course will run from 6 July to 18 July 2015 and includes 70 hours of class time divided into two weekly
sessions (6 hours per day, 5 days a week), including a Round-table discussion at the end of the course. All
lectures are given in English.
Each weekly session will be taught by leading scholars and practitioners in the field, such as WTO
professionals, EU Commission officers, professionals belonging to other international organizations as well
as public and private institutions active in international trade.
Attendance at classes is compulsory. Each day of the course, organized in units around a specific topic, will
encompass lectures, seminars and case studies around four main thematic areas:
1) The Multilateral Trade System. WTO Agreements: Multilateral Agreements on Trade in Goods,
Trade in Services (audiovisual, banking services, etc.), Trade-Related Aspects of Intellectual
Property Rights. The participation of the EU to international trade system: some criticalities. The
cluster also covers trade remedies, counterfeiting, and dispute settlement mechanisms, with a specific
focus on the role and contribution of the EU as a strategic actor within the WTO dispute settlement
mechanism. (25 hours)
2) European commercial policy post Lisbon (competences and instruments). Modernisation of the EU
Trade Defense Instruments. EU preferential trade agreements; EU and its member states
participation in the WTO: the distribution of competencies; the reform of the EU Customs Code. The
EU internal market: EU competition policy; subsidies; capital movement. Bilateral cooperation in the
field of competition policy: the agreements with the US, Japan and India. The new Free Trade
Agreements on goods and services concluded with ACP countries. The European protection of
intellectual property (20 hours)
3) Foreign Direct Investments. The new EU competence on foreign direct investments. The Draft
Regulation establishing a transitional regime for bilateral investment agreements between Member
States and third countries. The evolving international law on foreign investments: BITs, multilateral
rules, judicial practice. International mechanism and bodies for the internationalization of enterprises
including export assurance system and financial services: ICE, SACE, SIMEST. International
contracts: negotiations and drafting; different typologies of contracts (agency/licensing/selling/joint
venture); accessory instruments of international agreements; introduction to the related legal
framework. International commercial arbitration. (15 hours)
4) International trade and economic theory: economic analysis of trade in goods, international payments
and VAT on international exchanges, effects and results of trade liberalization, benefits and effects
of the international economic integration; the economic rationale behind the contingency protection
measures. (10 hours)

The school is open to post-graduates in Law, International Relations, Political Science, European Studies,
Economics and Statistics who are keen to acquire an in-depth knowledge of the most up-to-date issues of
international trade and aspire to construe an international career in this domain.

Online application
Admission is based on professional and academic achievement. A good knowledge of written and spoken
English is also required. Early application is encouraged. Qualified candidates are admitted on a rolling,
space-available basis. The deadline for applying to the Summer School is 16 May 2015.
Because of the interactive nature of the course, the number of participants is limited to 40. The course
will be activated upon admission of at least 20 participants.
Applications received after the deadline will be considered only if space remains. Applicants need to:
• Complete the online application form;
• Upload the detailed academic and professional CV;
• Upload the motivation letter, explaining the reasons for attending the Summer School.
Logistic details:
The course will be held at the LUISS Guido Carli campus located at Viale Romania 32, 00199 Rome.
During the courses, students will be provided with

• full Internet access
• access to the Library electronic sources.
They will also be able to access the university canteen and the in-house coffee shop. The organizing
committee is pleased to invite participants to a welcome reception and a farewell cocktail. A social program
will be proposed to the students, in the evenings, on a voluntary basis, taking advantage of the cultural and
musical events scheduled in Rome during the two weeks.
For the period of the Summer School, the organizational staff has made provisional bookings at Hotel Delle
Muse at the discounted rate of EUR 60.00 per night. This includes:

Certificates and credits:
Upon successful completion of the course and following a written examination, participants will be issued a
certificate of attendance which qualifies them for the accreditation of 8 ECTS points. The participation to the
Program will also qualify for the accreditation of 24 formative credits by the “Ordine degli Avvocati di
Roma” (Bar Association of Rome).
Tuition fees:
Tuition fees for the Summer School have been fixed at:
€ 1.300 for the attendance of the Summer School only
€ 1.950 as comprehensive of the two weeks accommodation at Hotel Delle Muse.
Within two weeks from their admission, and in any case by 6 June 2015, applicants are to complete the
enrolment procedure by paying their tuition fee into LUISS Bank account:

Scholarships covering tuition fees and accommodation costs may be awarded at the discretion of the Board
of the Summer School to applicants from non-EU countries.
Fees will be returned if the Summer School will not be activated failing the minimum number of
registrations.
Participants can request a full reimbursement of tuition fees if they cancel by 21 June 2015.
