Ohio’s #1 Scholastic Chess Program
Over the past 25 years, Jim Van Vorhis has taught over a thousand students the game of chess,
emphasizing patience and concentration with lessons that make the world’s most popular board game
FUN. Focusing on the importance of learning over merely winning, campers are taught problem solving
techniques and critical thinking skills through exercises in pattern recognition and chess puzzles. Since
1989, Jim and his staff have produced 2 nationally ranked elementary chess teams and have won over 20
state titles and championships. “Coach V.” is founder and current director of Great Lakes Chess, LLC.
Lial Chess Camp
The 2015 Lial Chess Camp is a half-day (9 AM-12 Noon) full week (Monday-Friday), camp that will
provide chess lessons at various playing levels, which focus on tactics and strategy designed to
improve skills in nearly every facet of the game.
Problem solving, pattern recognition and critical thinking skills are all taught and employed along
side the basic rules of scholastic chess. Campers also learn life lessons such as respecting a person’s
intellect over any physical characteristic.
The Lial Chess Camp staff makes learning chess FUN with variety of chess puzzles, exercises and
contests. Everyone will also have an opportunity play on the camp’s GIANT CHESS SET!
