Greendale Gazette - Greendale Public School
MARCH 2015 Greendale Gazette From the Principal’s Desk... Family Literacy refers to the many ways families develop and use literacy skills, from enjoying a storybook together at bedtime and during the day, to playing with word games, singing, writing to a relative or friend, sharing day-to-day tasks such as making a shopping list or using a recipe, and surfing the Internet for fun and interesting sites. (Family Literacy in Canada: Profiles of Effective Practices, Adele Thomas, Soleil Publishing Inc., 1998). It has been proven that for a child, the more time spent with a parent reading aloud increases his or her level of attachment, enhances a sense of security, and imparts the knowledge that their parent feels they are worthwhile people with whom to spend time. We encourage all parents to read with their child(ren) whether they are 4 years old or 14. Develop a routine of spending 15 minutes before bedtime reading to each other. Nothing inspires children to read more than a shiny new book! STUDENTS OF THE MONTH Congratulations to the following students who were selected as ―Students of the Month‖ who demonstrated improvement. Next month is perseverance which is effort and determination to complete a task to the best of our ability and to stick to that task even when it is difficult. ELP1 Saijh D., Isaiah D. COLDEST NIGHT OF THE YEAR 2015 On February 21st, a group of community minded intermediate students from our Me to We club contributed their time to volunteer at Project Share’s Coldest Night of the Year. Many thanks to Mrs. Hollett, Mrs. Tremblay, Saige, Jessica, and Stephanie , who joined Ms. Hammond, Ms. Boon on the Set-Up & Food Team. Kaytlyne, Mackenna and Sophia joined Miss Agostino out in the cold to Marshall and cheer on all the walkers. We also saw Jeremiah, Kathleen and Megan out walking for this great cause. Project Share met their goal of $25 000 to help with their food bank and other emergency services. Well done Greendalers! If you are interested in helping Project Share, like their page on Facebook (Project S H A R E). March Break There will be no classes for students from Monday, March 16th to Friday, March 20th. Classes will resume at 8:55 A.M. on Monday, March 23, 2015. We hope that students and staff will take this opportunity to relax and return refreshed for the final school term. MINI ME to WE Greendale's Mini Me to We Club is back! Students from grades 2 to 4 have been brainstorming ways to help others at home, at school and in our community. They are currently working on a project to show kindness to all of our students, from JK to grade 8! Last week was "Random Acts of Kindness" week - what a great time to start our club!! We will keep our Gator families posted about our upcoming projects! Kindergarten Enrolment We are still accepting Junior and Senior Kindergarten registrations for September 2015. If you have a child who will be four or five years of age on or before December 31, 2015, please call the school. To register a student, you will need the child’s birth certificate. If you know a neighbour or friend in our school area with a child who may attend Kindergarten, please ask them to call the school. Greendale Gazette Calling the Office with a Change of Plans The office is a very busy place particularly at the beginning and the end of the day. If you are calling the office to inform your child of a change in plans for the end of the day, please call the office prior to our second nutritional break (12:55 p.m.) to ensure that he/she gets the message. It is very disruptive to the class when Ms. Izzo has to interrupt the class to deliver messages to students. SCHOOL YARD SUPERVISION We’d like to remind you that there is no supervision on the school yard until 8:40 a.m., so please do not drop your child(ren) off before this time unless they are attending breakfast club. We appreciate your co- operation in this matter. SCHOOL COUNCIL Greendale School Council will be holding a shopping fundraiser. We will be sending home a Fundraising package right after the March break, selling organizational items, creative BBQ and kitchen gadgets, chocolates, seed mats, bulbs and numerous gift items. Catalogues for the Greendale ―shopping‖ fundraiser will be sent home on Monday March 23rd. This fundraiser will be the main fundraiser for the school year, so if you are looking for unique, affordable , and practical gifts for an upcoming special occasion - such as Mother Day : ), please consider browsing through the catalogues. Shop for your friends and family, or invite your friends and family to place their own order. (Please take advantage of holid ay gatherings to do that!) On-line shopping is also available for out of town family and friends – items ship directly to the purchaser at no charge with a purchase of $90.00. Please return all order forms to your child’s home room teacher on Tuesday April 7th, 2015. Cheques should be made payable to Greendale Public School. Cheques are preferred to cash, as they are safer (traceable) and they save our volunteers time. Students will receive prizes as per the prize brochure included in the seller's package based on their level of sales. All purchased items will be delivered to the school and directly to the classrooms by the week of May 4th. Students will receive a bag with all of the purchased items AND their pre determined prize. Our School Council will use some of their fundraising monies to subsidize $5.00 to every student for their year end trip. We will be holding a Spring Movie Night on April 23rd. Details will follow in April. Our next meeting will be on April 7th at 6:30 p.m. in the Library. Everyone is welcome. NUTRITION MONTH—HEALTHY MENU IDEAS Saving cents makes sense! Simmer up a pot of scrumptious soup. There’s nothing like the arome of homemade soup simmering on the stove on a cold day. Fill the pot with your favourite vegetables, whole grains and legumes for a healthy fibre-filled meal in a bowl. The combinations are endless! Make your own stock using vegetables; chicken, turkey or beef; water; garlic and spices. A big pot of soup can cost little and go a long way. Cook a pot of soup on the weekend to enjoy for lunches or simple weeknight suppers. Source: www.dietitians.ca Simple Carrot Soup (source: Karen Le Billon author of French Kids Eat Everything, www.karenlebillon.com) 60 ml (4 tbsp) olive oil 1 large onion, diced 1 kg (2 lbs) carrots 1 litre (4 cups) of water salt to taste 5 ml (1 tsp) dried parsley and/or dill (optional) Saute chopped onion at low temperature for at least 5 minutes, or until golden. (This is the secret of the soup! So don’t rush.) Add carrots (peeled or unpeeled, you decide) and raise the temperature to medium-high heat, and saute for 2 minutes. Add water. Cook at a gentle rolling boil until carrots are soft (about 8 to 10 minutes). Remove from heat, add herbs, and puree until smooth. If you like a thinner soup, add more water until it’s just right. Thanks to coaches Ms. Rutherford & Mr. Mason MAD SCIENCE Mad Science, the world’s leading provider of educational and entertaining science programs for children is coming to Greendale Public School. Their mission is to spark the imagination and curiosity of children everywhere by providing them with fun, entertaining and exciting activities that instil a clear understanding of what science is really all about and how it affects the world around them. They use exciting activities and spectacular demonstrations to capture the attention and imagination of children as we found out during our assembly. Students who join the science club will go on a voyage of discovery designed to support the Ontario Science and Technology curriculum. They will explore various topics in science including Watts Up, Under Pressure, Weather, Junior Reactors, Detecti ve Science and the Glow Show. The Club will take place on Mar 26, April 2, 9, 16, 23, 30 from 12:55 PM - 1:45 PM. Le Club Français Mademoiselle Rocheleau is starting a French club for students in grades 4— 8. We will play games, sing, bake, and do many other activities! Anyone who would like to sign up is welcome! Online Math Games - Thinking about the Games our Children Play (Tips from-National Council of Teachers of Mathematics NCTM) Math games are a wonderful way to engage children. There are many websites which allow children to practice their math facts. While there is a place for this type of practice, there is also a significant place for other websites and games which help children engage in mathematical reasoning and learning. Some questions that might help you determine the value of these types of math games follow: Is there variety in the mathematical tasks? If you play the same game over, will you be asked different questions? Are there different pathways to the end? Is there a combination of chance and choice in the game? That is, are there both a random component (rolling a dice, drawing a card) and an opportunity to make a decision? Is the competition positive and non-threatening? If a player gets stuck, are there hints? Does the child feel empowered and in control? In other words, do decisions have clear outcomes? Does the game encourage social play? The three C’s of game playing are: competition, collaboration, and communication. Even one-player games can spark rich discussion of strategy. Your child will receive the majority of his or her immunizations between the ages of two months and six years of age. Please take a moment to check your child’s Immunization Record (yellow card) to be sure his or her immunizations are up-to-date. Immunizations work best when given on time. For more information on childhood immunization, including the immunization schedule, speak with your doctor or visit www.health.gov.on.ca. If you have further questions, please call the Vaccine Preventable Disease Program at Niagara Region Public Health at 905-688-8248 or 1-888-505-6074 ext. 7425 to speak to a public health nurse.
