SUMMER ISSUE
GARDEN
SPOTLIGHT
Botanical Name: Hamamelis
x intermedia
Common Name: Witch
Hazel
Witch hazel are vase-shaped
deciduous shrubs that can
reach heights of 12 feet or
more if not pruned. Fall
foliage is yellow. The flowers
bear a warm, spicy fragrance
and precede the leaves,
blooming in late winter to
early spring. The fringe-like
petals on these yellow flowers
resemble small strips of paper
that have just exited from a
shredder.
Witch hazel can be found in
all of our public gardens and
requires full sun (for best
flowering) to part shade,
moderate water, and blooms
February to March here in the
Piedmont.

AT GATEWAY GARDENS
- A Benefit for Greensboro Beautiful SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 19, 2015 | 7-10 PM
Gateway Gardens | 2924 E. Lee Street
We're excited to announce our first annual Gala, set for Saturday, September 19, 2015 from
7-10pm at Gateway Gardens. Titled, “Good Night Moon,” this 2015 premiere event is being
sponsored by First Citizens Bank. Featuring a catered buffet, wine & beer, an impressive
Silent Auction, the unveiling of a new Children's Garden sculpture by Jim Gallucci, live
music, and even a moon and star-gazing area, it will be an evening not to miss.
Each attendee will receive an Event Program, which will list event sponsors, silent auction
donors, Greensboro Beautiful contributors, Business Partners, and advertisers from businesses
and professionals in our community.
We invite you to participate in any of the following ways:
1) Plan to attend. Tickets will be available for purchase in August. Donors at the $250 level
and above will receive 2 complimentary tickets, with the option to purchase additional
tickets at a discounted rate. Donors at the $25-$249 level will be able to purchase tickets
at the discounted rate.
2) Purchase an ad in the Event Program. The program not only promotes businesses and
services, but also provides advertisers the opportunity to include coupons and discounts
to their establishments, making it a keeper!
3) Donate an item or service for the silent auction.
4) All of the above!
For information on how to purchase tickets, event program ads, or to donate to the Silent
Auction, visit GreensboroBeautiful.org.
Greensboro Beautiful events and gardens are a vital component in our community. Proceeds
raised at this event will be used to fund the new sculpture in the Children's Garden, as well as
future development of all our public gardens. Please mark your calendar now and plan to join
us for this exciting new event! You make a difference.

FROM THE CHAIR
Here at
Greensboro
Beautiful we are
busy wrapping up
our
NeighborWoods
Tree Planting in
the Warnersville
neighborhood, the
Great American
Cleanup, Groovin’
in the Garden:
Jazz at Gateway
Gardens, and
planning for numerous public garden
enhancements and special events in our
gardens. But we need your help to carry out
this important work.
We are working hard to reach our
contributed income goal of nearly $80,000
this year, and every gift matters. Your
support helps make our four unique public
gardens a reality. It also helps us organize
two city-wide litter cleanups and community
tree planting events each year. Our donors
have helped fund hundreds of beautification
projects in every corner of our great city. Can
you imagine what Greensboro would look
like without all these amenities in our
landscape? Your giving helps to continue to
bring beauty and a high quality of life to all
of our families and children in a very lasting
way. And, recent economic impact numbers
prove that tourism is a viable and valuable
economic vehicle for Guilford County, even
without the advantage of mountains or a
coastline. Organizations like Greensboro
Beautiful serve all citizens and help make the
community more visible and vibrant,
encouraging increased tourism and economic
growth.
Please make an investment in Greensboro
Beautiful today, and help us continue our
work in the community. Make a secure taxdeductible donation online now at
GreensboroBeautiful.org.
And plan to join us for the “Good Night
Moon” Gala and Silent Auction at Gateway
Gardens on September 19. Proceeds from this
new and exciting event – ticket sales,
advertising sales, and the silent auction – will
be used to fund the new Gallucci sculpture in
the Children's Garden, as well as future
development of our public gardens.
Your continued financial support helps all of
us to enjoy the bounty of nature we are so
very fortunate to have here in Greensboro!
On Saturday, March 21,
Greensboro celebrated Arbor
Day by holding the Spring
NeighborWoods Right Plant,
Right Place tree planting in the
Warnersville neighborhood.
Over 175 residents and
community volunteers joined
Community Tree Planting Program
Greensboro Beautiful and the
City of Greensboro to plant 150 trees in honor of the neighborhood’s 150th
Anniversary.
“Right Plant, Right Place” is designed to help educate residents about the
importance of placing trees in appropriate locations to provide years of
beauty and value without the potential dangers of getting too close to power
lines. The City selected the locations and types of trees that would most
impact the neighborhood. This program is a unique partnership between the
City of Greensboro, Greensboro Beautiful, the NC Cooperative Extension
Service Master Gardeners, Dunlap Lawn Service, neighborhood residents,
and community volunteers; and is funded by a generous grant from UPS and
private donations to Greensboro Beautiful's Tree Fund.
Randal Romie, GBI's Urban Forestry Committee's Co-Chair said, “Through
this program, we have volunteers from all over the city. It's wonderful to see
the next generation planting trees for the future.” Groups of students from
North Carolina A&T, Bennett College, UNCG, and High Point University
joined in the event to help the neighborhood. As part of her opening
remarks and Arbor Day Proclamation, Mayor Nancy Vaughan stated, “Most
people who visit Greensboro assume we're Greensboro because we're so
green. They don't know our history. If they want to say it's because we're so
beautiful, I think we'll take that!”

Greensboro Regional Realtors Association for again
sponsoring the cleanup in Greensboro with a grant of
$1,000. And a big thank you to the more than 950
volunteers who signed up to clean up litter and trash
from our streams, neighborhoods, streets, and public

GREAT AMERICAN
CLEANUP
MEMORIAL & HONOR GIFT TREE PROGRAM
Remember loved ones, honor friends, and celebrate life’s
milestones with the lasting gift of a tree
This program offers a unique way to pay tribute and show appreciation to the special people in your
life, and to celebrate life’s special moments with the lasting gift of a tree. It enables Greensboro Beautiful
to plant trees where needed throughout our city on public property.
You may purchase a gift tree as a memorial or as an honorarium, and select a canopy tree or an
understory tree, desired planting location, or simply indicate "where needed". Tell us who to notify and
we’ll send them a special note telling them about the gift tree, and listing the donor’s name and address.
If the gift is to celebrate a particular special occasion, let us know and we’ll include it in the special note.
Notifications are mailed immediately. However, trees are planted in January, February, and March only.
Gifts must be received before December 1st for trees to be planted during these months. Gifts received
after this date will be held and used to plant trees the following year.
Once the tree has been planted, we’ll let both you and the recipient know the type, planting date and
location.
Invest in the appearance of your community while remembering someone special or celebrating a
special occasion with a unique and lasting gift. For more information, visit GreensboroBeautiful.org.
