Daily Quizzes: Beginning in the second week of classes we will have a 5 minute pop-quiz at the
beginning and/or the end of lectures. Each quiz is worth 1% of your letter grade. You will not
know in advance what days the quizzes are on, so please be prepared. These quizzes serve two
purposes: 1) To encourage you to attend each lecture, arrive on time time, and stay until the end,
and, 2) To give you a reason to review the material regularly. The quizzes are cumulative, and

cover all previous material. (ie-they will not be on just the current of previous week's lecture
material.) I will be locking the door at 5 minutes past the hour. If you are late to class, and
arrive after the door is locked, you will miss the quiz, and lose 1% of your grade. You will
not be permitted to make up the quiz later. So, don’t be late!
**ATTENTION: If you are late, DO NOT KNOCK ON THE DOOR! I will not let anybody in
after the door is shut. There will be a ten minute break at the top of the hour. You can come
in then. ***
Lab Reports: Each lab is associated with a lab report. Lab reports from the previous week are
due at the BEGINNING of the next lab session. NO EXCEPTIONS. NO PART MARKS FOR
LATE LAB REPORTS. Lab reports are worth 1% of your grade, each.
Lab Reports and Plagiarism: Plagiarism is the act of presenting somebody else’s work, and
pretending it is your own. You are supposed to work on your lab reports by yourself, but you do
have to cooperate with your lab partners. However, you should not submit lab reports that use
the same wording. This constitutes plagiarism, which is considered to be a very serious offense.
At Columbia, instructors are required to fill out reports on students who plagiarize each other’s
material, and being found guilty of plagiarism could result in expulsion from the college.
Lab Quizzes: Each lab has a section at the beginning called “Lab Quiz Questions.” At the
beginning of each lab we will have a quiz, and the questions will be drawn from these questions.
So, make sure you know the answers to these questions before coming to the lab. Each lab
report is worth 1% of your mark, and the quiz is worth half of this mark. Again, I will be
locking the door to the lab at 5 minutes past the hour, and if you are late you will not be
able to write the quiz, and you will lose 0.5% of your grade. So, don’t be late!
Lab 2 Pre-assignment: Note that Lab 2 also has a pre-lab assignment. This assignment is worth
1% of your grade, and is due at the beginning of the lab period for Lab 2.
Lab Attendance: If you miss a lab, I cannot accept a lab report for that lab. You must actually
DO the lab in order to get credit for it.
Tardiness (lateness) for lectures: Do not be late for lecture or lab! Each lecture will start at 5
minutes past the hour. I will shut and lock the door in order for the class to do the quiz. If you
are late, and the door is closed DO NOT KNOCK ON THE DOOR. We will have a break at
the top of the hour, and I will open the door. You will have to wait until the break to come in.
Conduct During Tests and Exams: All you will need during tests will be a pencil (or pen), a
spare pencil, and an eraser. Do not bring PENCIL CASES to your desk, as some students hide
notes in their pencil cases. Absolutely NO ELECTRONIC DEVICES are allowed during
tests. You must place all of your belongings at the front of the room before sitting down. Leave
your iPads, iPhones and pencil cases in your bags. DO NOT LEAVE THEM IN YOUR
POCKETS. If you are even FOUND with an iPad or iPhone in your pocket during an exam you
will be penalized for cheating. (This is standard Columbia College Policy.) Do not look around.
Do not expose your paper to another student (keep it covered). Do not communicate with others

(no whispering…do not even whisper to yourself!). DO NOT ASK OTHER STUDENTS TO
BORROW THEIR ERASERS OR PENCIL SHARPENERS! Bring your OWN erasers
and pencil sharpeners. For the larger tests, like mid-terms, I will be assigning seating. All
exams will be numbered, and all seats will be numbered. I will post a notice on the door
indicating which seat you will be at. Read the notice, and when I open the door, place your
belongings at the front of the room, and quickly move to the seat you have been assigned.
