Club History
The Great Slave Yacht Club is a non-profit organization registered under the Societies Act of the
Northwest Territories.
The Great Slave Yacht Club operates out of Yellowknife, Northwest Territories, Canada
(approximately Lat N 62° Long W 114°) on the shores of Great Slave Lake. The Great Slave
Yacht Club provides docking facilities for fifty-six vessels ranging in size up to 50 feet. The
Great Slave Yacht Club has a clubhouse which is used for social functions and training courses
in boater safety, navigation and first aid.
The Great Slave Yacht Club was incorporated in 1984 by a small group of boaters determined to
acquire docking facilities for their vessels. In 1990, the Great Slave Yacht Club moved from its
original location to its current location on Back Bay.
The mandate of the Great Slave Yacht Club is:
1. Encourage safe boating and water sports on Great Slave Lake, including training and
marine operation.
2. Provide docking and other services and facilities related to boating, and social events to its
members
3. Preserve marine history on Great Slave Lake.

Rules and Regulations
1. All Members who have a vessel moored at the Great Slave Yacht Club marina are expected
to actively participate in the Club’s work parties. Members will be assessed an annual fee of
$150.00 in addition to their annual docking fees. Members who fail to participate in three (3)
or more work parties will forfeit the deposit to the club and will be required to pay another
deposit the following season. Members whom fulfill the work party requirements will have
the deposit retained on account by the GSYC and refunded to them when they no longer
require a slip.
2. Members shall conduct themselves properly while on the Club premises and shall also be
responsible for the conduct of their family and guests while they are on the premises.
3. Members are responsible for the proper disposal of trash/garbage in the receptacle provided
by the Great Slave Yacht Club. Members shall ensure that used motor oil is properly
disposed off-site
4. Members shall comply with the City of Yellowknife Noise Control bylaw (# 3537) between the
hours of 11:00 P.M. and 7:00 A.M.
5. Members shall comply with the No-Wake Zone within 50 meters of the Great Slave Yacht
Club marina.
6. Members shall comply with the parking restrictions in the parking area. Members shall not
leave vehicles unattended in designated loading zones.
Access must be provided for
emergency service vehicle.
7. No member of the Great Slave Yacht Club shall operate a business of any
kind which utilizes club facilities, unless approved by the GSYC Board of Directors.
8. The operation of any motor vehicle or vessel, while impaired in any manner, on or at the
Great Slave Yacht Club will not be tolerated.

Docking Rules
1. Members must pay their docking fees prior to docking at the Great Slave Yacht Club.
2. Members must provide proof of liability insurance to the Purser (minimum $1,000,000.00)
before docking at the marina. The GSYC reserves the right to refuse any vessel which is
not properly insured.
3. Members shall be responsible to ensure that their vessels are properly secured when
docked at the marina. Docking lines must be kept in good condition and be replaced if
showing signs of wear.
4. Please keep bilges clean and oil/fuel free; members are responsible for any spill clean-up
fees.
5. Members shall not transport, store, fill or dispense gasoline or diesel fuel to or from
unapproved containers on or at the Great Slave Yacht Club property. The burden of
remediation of spills (including biohazards) onto Great Slave Yacht Club property will be
passed onto the member or members responsible.
6. Vessel waste servicing/removal shall be limited to the fuel dock area and waste (sewage)
containers or vehicles shall not be stored on GSYC property.
7. Members shall place/maintain/store all docking lines, electrical cords and boating gear so as
not to create a safety hazard for other members and guests.
8. Members using the fuel dock must do so in a timely manner.
9. Members shall not leave their vessel unattended at the fuel dock.
10. Members shall use caution and adhere to all safety regulations when refuelling.
11. Members shall only use the fuel dock for vessel waste removal or for fuelling boats and
CSA/ULC/DOT/ABYC/NMMA Canada/USCG certified fuel containers.
12. Members are responsible to ensure that their docking slips are properly secured and
maintained in good shape.
13. Where space permits, dinghies shall be secured tight to or on the vessel with the engine in
the down position or removed from the dinghy.
14. Members are only allowed to hold one slip unless approved otherwise by the board.
Clubhouse Rules
1. Members are responsible for their conduct in the Clubhouse and also for the conduct of
family members and guests.
2. Pets are not permitted in the Clubhouse.
3. Members are responsible to ensure that the Clubhouse premises are properly secured when
leaving the premises.
4. Members are responsible for general clean up after using the Clubhouse and/or barbecue.
Conduct
Failure to comply with the rules and regulations of the Great Slave Yacht Club may result in
disciplinary action, up to and including termination of membership.

General Information
1. Membership Fees (2014):
Associate Membership fees are $25.00 annually + GST
Regular Membership fees are $100.00 annually + GST
Associate Members in good standing are entitled to the following:
•
A key to the clubhouse, and use of all our on-shore facilities.
•
An invitation to all club functions while bringing one guest.
•
Receive the newsletter by email.
•
Parking on the premises.
•
Attend any members meeting or Board of Directors meeting including the Annual
General Meeting.
Regular Members in good standing are entitled to all five club privileges above plus:
•
Full voting rights at any members meeting including the Annual General Meeting.
•
To run for office on the clubs’ Board of Directors.
•
Refuel their boat at the fuel pump provided the proper insurance documents have been
filed with the purser.
•
Be offered a slip and moor your boat at the clubs facility.
•
Be on the waiting list for a slip
2. Annual Docking Fees (2014):
•
Refer to 2014 Slip Fee Schedule.
Members must provide proof of insurance to the Purser prior to using the docking and fuel
facilities.
Membership and docking fees are due May 15th of each year. This will keep your membership
in good standing for slip retention or keep your spot on the waiting list.

3. Shore Power:
The club has a limited number of slips with shore power service. If you require shore power
and are assigned a slip with shore power, you must use a government approved shore
power cord. Normal extension cords are not accepted and will be unplugged if you try to use
them. Shore power is $150/season plus GST for a 15 amp service.
4. Work Parties:
The Great Slave Yacht Club does not have salaried staff and therefore relies on volunteers
to get things done. Most work is done in the early part of the season, beginning as soon as
weather permits (late April or early May), and continues until the last week in June.
Workparties are held every Tuesday and Thursday evening beginning at 7PM and Saturday
mornings at 10AM when required, during this period. One or two additional work parties are
held on Saturdays in the fall (usually the end of September or first of October) to remove the
slips from the water and secure the facilities for the winter.
5. Fuel:
Members interested in obtaining a key for the fuel tank should contact Bassett Petroleum
Products at the old Shell Bulk Plant in Kam Lake. The address is 139 Curry Drive and the
phone number is 873-8500. You will need to set up an account with a credit card to obtain
your gas pump key and access code from them. Proof of current vessel liability insurance
required.
NOTE: Only to be used for filling boats and approved fuel containers, the GSYC insurance
doesn’t cover fuelling road vehicles.
6. Clubhouse Key:
All members are entitled to a Clubhouse key.
These can be obtained from any Board
Member.
7. Newsletters:
All members will receive newsletters on a semi-regular basis by email. Paper copies will not
be mailed anymore, so please ensure your email address is on file with the club steward.

Policy on Assignment of Docking Facilities
Membership fees must be paid in full by May 15st prior to the start of the new season.
New members who join on or after January 1st will be considered a member in good standing for
the upcoming season.
The assignment of docking fees is based on a member’s good standing status.
Member’s good standing status will be determined based on the initial date that the membership
fee is paid, assuming no lapse period.
After a designated date each year when slip fees must be paid for in full, slips will be assigned
by the Board of Directors.
Docking facilities (slips) will be assigned by the Board of Directors, in the following order of
priority:
1.
Members, who docked at a slip last season, are a member in good standing and were
not subletting a slip.
2.
Members who gave their slip back to the Board of Directors for sublet the previous
season.
3.
Members who expressed an interest in docking a boat, and those that had a slip the
prior year through a sublet, prioritized by date of good standing of the member.
The following scenario illustrates the policy:
1. If you were a member in 1984 and you paid your membership dues up to 2007, for 2008 you
did not pay membership dues, paid again in February 2009 and slip allocations were in May
2009.

For slip allocation purposes, this person is a member in good standing for 4 months
(February to May 2009).

2. If you were a member in 2006 and you paid your membership dues up to 2007, for 2008 you
did not pay membership dues, paid again in January 2009 and slip allocations were in May
2009.
b.
For slip allocation purposes, this person is a member in good standing for 5 months
(January to May 2009).
If there was only one slip to be allocated, the person described in scenario 2 would be allocated
the slip.
The Board of Directors reserve the right to make changes in slip assignments among members
as required. The Board of Directors will make every reasonable effort to ensure that members
are assigned their preferred choice of docking slip. However, consideration will also be given to
member docking slip requirements - that is, providing slips that are most appropriate to
accommodate the size of the vessel. Where a vessel requires a 32 foot slip, reasonable efforts
will be made to accommodate the request. If the vessel size can be accommodated by a 24
foot slip, that is the size that will be provided. Members with larger boats may be passed over
on the waiting list if a suitable slip is not available.
Members may not assign or sublet their slips to any individual. If a member gives notice that
his/her slip will not, for whatever reason, be occupied during part or all of the season, that slip
will be used at the discretion of the Board of Directors.
In the event that a member sells his/her vessel after being assigned a slip for the season, the
member cannot sell or assign to the purchaser the right to use the slip. The purchaser would be
assigned a slip by the GSYC Board in accordance with this policy.

Policy on Refund of Slip Fees
The Great Slave Yacht Club is a non-profit organization dedicated to the promotion of
recreational boating on Great Slave Lake. As such, when the Club provides facilities or services
to its members, the costs of providing these facilities is recovered by levying a fee-for-use
against those members using them. In providing docking facilities, the Club incurs costs related
to the property we occupy, insurance, slip construction and general maintenance repairs. The
total of these costs are shared equally by those members who rent slips.
As a result of this funding method, the Great Slave Yacht Club cannot issue refunds of the
docking fees unless the Club has another member waiting to make use of the slip.
Any requests for refunds must be made in writing to the Club’s Board of Directors.
Notwithstanding the foregoing, a refund will be issued in the event that the Great Slave Yacht
Club is unable, for whatever reason, to provide a member with a docking facility.
Members wishing to sublet their slip for a season and retain a slip for the next season shall first
pay the full cost of the slip and then make their intentions known to the Board. The Board will
then assign the slip in accordance with the Policy on Assignment of Slips and refund a total of
70% of the funds collected from the new lessee to the original slip holder. Slips can only be
sublet for one year, exceptional circumstances may be considered by the board.
Under no circumstances shall a slip holder sublet his/her slip to another boater without the
approval of the board.
