Job Description: Bookkeeper
The Church of the Heavenly Rest, a non-profit religious organization located at 2 East 90th Street, seeks a
professional to assume the role of bookkeeper.
Overview:
• This is a part time position of no more than 24 hours a week; the duties are that of a bookkeeper.
• Work with the Chief Administrative Officer (CAO) to ensure the smooth functioning of the financial control
and reporting needs of the parish.
• Provide support to the Financial Affairs Committee, the Stewardship Committee, the Audit Committee, The
Budget Committee, and the Treasurer.
Job Responsibilities:
• Execute the financial functions of the parish, including, but not limited to, working on budgeting, maintaining
financial controls, and executing regular financial transactions.
• Maintain the General Ledger, process accounts payable, cut checks, make deposits, maintain pledge records.
• Support the Capital Campaign Steering Committee by recording pledges made and pledge receipts.
• Prepare monthly financial reports for the Rector, CAO, Vestry and Congregation.
• Prepare Quarterly Statements for parishioners, reflecting annual pledge and receipts, capital campaign
pledge and receipts, and any other contributions to the Church.
• Alert the CAO to any unusual financial transactions.
• Prepare Stewardship reports required by the Stewardship Committee.
• Track cash flow needs and alert the CAO of any potential short falls.
• Collaborate with Director of Capital Projects and Outside Partnerships to ensure timely payment of bills and
collection of payables.
• Coordinate annual financial audit with Audit Committee and outside auditors.
• Assist the CAO in updating The Church of the Heavenly Rest accounting policy and procedure manual.
Skills and Abilities:
• Experience and ability with accounting procedures and organizational financial controls.
• Sound data entry skills. Pro-active and highly organized.
• Strong working knowledge of Excel and QuickBooks.
• Experience with developing organizational policies and procedures.
• Ability to work well with a diverse group of people.
• Considered a plus: experience working with a church; working with Church Windows software; familiarity
with Paychex payroll systems.
