Gangtok, Apr 11: Get

After taking the neighboring country Nepal by
storm, ‘Zindagi Rocks’, a
rom-com adventure film is
all set to woo the audience of Sikkim, Darjeeling
and kalimpong as it hits
the theaters next month.

Khagragarh blast: NIA
arrests a suspect in Malda
Malda, Apr 11: A five member team from the National
Investigation Agency (NIA)
on Friday night apprehended one Bin Amin Seikh (32)
from Ansaritola village under
Baliadanga GP of Kaliachak
area in Malda district near the
Indo-Bangladesh border in
connection with the October
2 2014 Khagragarh blast
case.
Amin was taken to Kolkata last night. The blast last
year had occurred in a house
in the Khagragarh locality of
Burdwan, killing two suspected terrorists of Jamaatul-Mujahideen of Bangladesh on the spot and had
left a third man severely injured. The police had seized
55 improvised explosive devices, RDX, wrist watch dials and SIM cards from the
spot on the day of explosion.
Amin, arrested last night
hails from Bhagabangola in
Murshidabad district and
had taken refuge at the
house of one Mahbool Rahaman at Ansaritola village
to escape arrest, said police
sources.
The NIA officials on April
2 had nabbed one Mehboob
Seikh on charges of providing refuge to Amin who used
to frequent his house in Kaliachak. On questioning, Mehboob had mentioned Amin
to be one of those involved
in the Khagragarh blast case.
The local police were informed by the NIA of Amin’s
visit and had been instructed to keep the suspect under constant vigil which finally led to Amin’s arrest last
night by the NIA team. (HS)
Man arrested with
firearm
Malda,Apr 11: English Bazar police of Malda district apprehended a man with a handgun from the local railway hospital area late
Friday night. The man has been identified as one Anis Khan (30),
a resident of Sattari village under the EB police station.
Dipak Karmakar, the EB police station officer-in-charge
said, “Some police officials patrolling the railway hospital
area spotted the man in suspicious condition and detained
him. Later a country made pistol and a few rounds of bullets
were recovered from him.” (HS)
Duo injured
in road mishap
Malda, Apr 11: Two bikers were severely injured when they
were hit by two weight-laden lorries from behind, at the
Mathurapur area of Manikchowk under the Malda district
today morning.
The incident occurred at around 8:30 am when the two
bikers came in between the wheels of two ten-wheeled lorries. According to police, the lorries were over-carrying sand,
due to which the drivers lost control resulting into the accident. The injured duo has been admitted to Malda Medical
College and Hospital in critical condition and is undergoing
treatment. (HS)

Lok Adalat
settles 6 cases

Gangtok,Apr 11: National Lok
Adalat relating to Labour and
Family matters was held today
throughout the country.
Under the initiative, Sikkim State Legal Services Authority constituted nine Lok
Adalat Benches at District
Court Level and Taluk (SubDivision) levels out of which
Labour and Family cases
were taken up in Court of
Judge Lok Adalat, East at
Gangtok, Court of District &
Sessions Judge, West at Gyalshing and Court of District
& Sessions Judge, North at
Mangan. A total of 11 cases
were received out of which 6
cases were successfully settled. A sum of Rs 3, 85,000,
was also awarded by the Lok
Adalat Benches.
As per information Sikkim
SLSA would be organizing
National Lok Adalat on various subjects every month.
St Joseph hosts seminar
on ‘Interrogating Development:
Regional and Sub-Regional Trends’
Gangtok, Apr 11: Two days
long seminar on “Interrogating Development: Regional
and Sub-Regional Trends”
was held at St. Joseph’s College of Darjeeling recently.
The seminar was organized to interrogate the idea
of development and to find
out a critical stance of its regional and sub-regional manifestations.
Senior scholars of international repute like Prof. Virginious Xaxa, Deputy Director,
Tata Institute of Social Sciences, Gauhati and Prof.
Sharit K Bhowmik, Tata Institute of Social Sciences,
Mumbai and National Fellow,
ICSSR, New Delhi graced the
the two days conference on
March 29-30.
The conference was funded by the ICSSR.
The other dignitaries who
presented speech in each
academic session and
chaired the technical sessions were Prof. Sibranjan
Mishra, Visva Bharati, Prof.
Abhijit Mitra, Burdwan University, Dr. Dilip Sarkar, Prof.
Sanchari Mukherjee and Dr.
Swatahsiddha Sarkar, North
Bengal University. The seminar witnessed twenty four
research papers followed by
discussion thereafter.
In the inaugural speech
of Dr. C. B. Rai, former principal of St. Joseph’s College
stressed on the contribution
of Jesuits in the field of education in Darjeeling hills and
the significance of the philosophy of Rev. Father Arrupe at the level of collegiate
education.
While introducing the
conference theme convenor
Dr. Anjan Chakrabarti, Head,
Department of Economics
held the view that strategies
and policies for economic
development often get contested and become contentious since most of our national and regional economic strategies focus on economic competitiveness that
too in a knowledge driven
global economy.
Prof. Sharit Kumar Bhowmik in his keynote address
pointed out that not only the
wage differential between
organized and unorganized
sector is on rise, but the phenomenon is also the same
among the same class of labourers in different unorganized sectors. He also
brought his research findings on the present and future of the tea-gardens and
tea-gardens labourers of Darjeeling and Dooars region.
Prof. Virginis Xaxa, Tata Institute of Social Science,
Gauhati, in his special lecture
raised the crucial question
that the attempt to address
inequity, inequality through
so called development ultimately breeds further
inequity,inequality.
Dr. Swatahsiddha Sarkar
while presenting his argument strongly argued that
though development and
politics are inseparable issues, development over and
over again makes its presence in a depoliticised form.
To him, identity aspirations
and agenda for development
often become mutually exclusive however the reality denies such corroboration.
St. Joseph’s college has
decided to bring out an edited volume incorporating
these presentations made
during the conference days,
which will not only help the
researchers of this region but
also prove to be an important policy document for various policy makers and planners working at both government and non-government
agencies of this region and
beyond.

Beijing, Apr 11: A nun set
herself on fire while crying
out for the Dalai Lama to return to Tibet in the latest in
dozens of self-immolations
in recent years by Tibetans
protesting Beijing's controls
over the region, overseas
rights groups said.
Yeshi Khando, 47, of Ngangang Nunnery circled
Kardze Monastery in Sichuan province and then
self-immolated on Wednesday near the police station
while shouting slogans including "Tibet needs freedom," London-based Free
Tibet said in a statement Friday. She also called out "Let
His Holiness Return to Tibet" as she was on fire, the
group said, a reference to the
Tibetan Buddhist spiritual
leader who has lived for decades in exile in India.
The Washington, D.C.based International Campaign for Tibet also reported
the immolation, but used a
slightly different spelling for
the nun's name.
The groups said security
personnel and police used
extinguishers to put out the
flames and took Yeshi Khando away, and that local sources believed she died.
A woman reached at the
Ganzi county government
denied that any self-immolation happened on Wednesday and hung up. Calls to
the county police office rang
unanswered. Yeshi Khando's
nunnery could not be contacted.
Tibetan monks and nuns
are among the most active
opponents of Chinese rule in
the region and face some of
the harshest restrictions on
their activities. Earlier this
week, Tibet's Communist
Party chief Chen Quanguo
has demanded that Buddhist
monasteries display the national flag as part of efforts
to shore up Chinese patriotism.
Dozens of Tibetan Buddhist monks and laypeople
have set themselves on fire
in protest of Beijing's strict
controls over the region and
their religion and to call for
the return of the Dalai Lama,
according to the overseas
rights groups.
The International Campaign for Tibet says 113 men
and 24 women have self-immolated since March 2011,
the vast majority of whom
have died.
Gorkha organisation to
be set up in Siliguri
Siliguri, Apr 11: A meeting
was held this morning at
Gorkha Kalyan Sangathan in
Bikashnagar, Salugara between the local Gorkha people and several noted Gorkha
literateurs, authors, writers
and activists. With the objective of establishing cohesiveness and solidarity
amongst the Gorkha community residing in Siliguri, the
meeting discussed over the
pressing need of forming an
organization that would help
the local Gorkha populace
scattered across Siliguri to
build a strong cohesiveness
amongst the community.
Nar Bahadur Dahal, a noted local litterateur who also
presided over the meeting
and C.K.Shrestha, a local
writer and the chief guest for
today's meeting were greeted with colourful khada and
tika. The welcome speech
was given by Suren
Pradhan, a social worker of
the area.
During his keynote address, chief guest CK Shrestha, said that it has become
very essential for the Nepali
people living in Siliguri to
stay united and foster brotherhood amongst themselves,
to which he proposed for
setting up of an organisation
christened as the ‘Siliguri
Gorkha Samaj’, an idea which
was actually coined by
Sudha Pashi, a local activist
who wanted to call it ‘Gorkha
Mancha’.
“With the setting up of
the Siliguri Gorkha Samaj, we
Nepalis living in Siliguri can
come to each other’s help,
and stay united as well,” said
Shrestha.
His idea of changing the
original name ‘Gorkha Mancha’ into ‘Siliguri Gorkha Samaj’ was debated by 70-80%
of the people present in the
event.
In response, Suren
Pradhan, who has been
elected the Convener for
three months for the proposed organisation said,
“Within this span of three
months, the committee shall
discuss on the resolutions
and agendas required for setting up of the sangathan.”
The name of the organisation shall be finalised later. It
is a secondary issue, and
shall be given a collective
thought afterwards,” he added.

activist and social worker

organic farming

training and interaction
programme on Sikkim
Organic Mission
was held at Dalapchand Gram
Prasashan Kendra, East Sikkim
on Friday. The
program was presided over by the
Panchayat President, Dalapchand
GPU in presence of H. K.
Gautam, Joint Director, Natural Resource Management/
Food Security and Agriculture Development Department, Nima Doma Bhutia,
DDA, Tshering Chopel Bhutia, Mission Officer, Service
provider ICCOA, Official of
Agriculture and Horticulture
Department, Panchayat
Members and farmers of the
GPU.
While addressing the
programme Joint Director
H.K Gautam explained in detail about the aims and objectives of the state government mission programme on
Organic farming and certification. He also explained
about the soil testing report,
soil health card and plant
health management. Tshering Chopel Bhutia highlighted the benefit of organic manure and organic pesticides,
and its ultimate benefit to increase the productivity of
land in sustainable manner.
The Panchayat President informed about the present status of organic farming in the
area and utilization of organ-
ic manure.
The demonstration on
preparation and use of bioagent/botanical extract including maintenance and exercise on farm diary was also
displayed by service provider ICCOA for the benefit of
the farmers. An interactive
session was arranged between farmers and resource
persons where the farmers
showed keen interest and
actively participated in the
discussion.
Similarly, Day long GPU
level training on organic farming and certification was held
today at Chota Samdong
Arubotey Panchayat Bhavan for the farmers.
More than 80 participants
from different wards of GPU
attended the training. Panchayat President Poon Maya
Subba and the Deputy Director J.B. Subba attended the
program.
