Parent Newsletter - April, May, June 2015
April, May and June 2015 Newsletter Volume 3, Issue 4 E-Learning, Monday, April 27 & Wednesday, April 29 As most recall, this past winter was particularly harsh and resulted in a number of school closings and delays. Huntington County Community School Corporation has decided to try using E-Learning as a way to make-up two of the twelve hours of instruction lost to snow days. Instead of going 2 more extended days, we have elected to use E-Learning for those last 2 hours to count toward the 3 days that we are making up. So what is E-Learning? E-Learning is the use of technology to enable people to learn anytime and anywhere. Huntington North High School’s E-Learning days will offer a blended learning environment for students. Teachers will create standards based lessons with resources and the assignments will be available through Canvas, a learning management system. Students will have the opportunity to do relevant, practical work as makeup days prior to Indiana State testing. The school work will relate to the material being covered in class. Having the technical and organizational skills necessary to do independent, online learning is important for our students. What will E-Learning look like for our students? There will be a schedule for students to follow and they will be expected to complete required activities or assignments within four school days of the E-Learning day. Huntington North High School will use the following schedule: E-Learning Day 1: Monday, April 27 – Periods 1 and 2 E-Learning Day 2: Wednesday, April 29 – Periods 3 and 4 Students will have four days to complete assignments from each of the dates above used for E-Learning. Each night teachers will be available online for questions between 8 pm – 9 pm. While assignments may require the internet (not all will), there are several options for families without internet access. For some assignments the required files can be downloaded in advance, the day before while at school. For some assignments the student may be able to do the actual thinking/writing process while at home and then quickly upload it when they return to school. (For example, if the assignment is to write a response to a blog, the student could complete it while at home.) Parents may consider other options, such as taking their child to a family member or a friend’s residence who has access or to one of the many places with free public access. Students will not be penalized if they cannot get internet service, but they will be responsible for either doing alternative assignments or completing the work requiring the internet while at school. If you have any questions, please contact your student’s teachers or you may call the main office and speak with the administration. Sincerely, Chad Daugherty Principal ATHLETICS ATHLETIC PHYSICALS for 2015-2016 The Huntington North Athletic Department, Parkview Huntington Hospital, and SportONE Ortho Northeast will be holding a Physical Clinic on Thursday, June 4, 2015 at Huntington North. Graduation 2015 June 5 7:00 pm Huntington North High School Gym Congratulations The World Language Department is proud to announce that Jessica Kauffman and Paige Gordon have been accepted into the IU Honors Foreign Language Program to study abroad this summer after complete a rigorous application and interview process. Jessica will be studying in Chile and Paige will be studying in Mexico. This program is for students who have completed at least 3 levels of a foreign language study and plan to study more when they return. They have to be willing to speak the foreign language for their 7-week stay with a host family. The experience is wonderful for their language ability and for their understanding of that culture. Fiddler on the Roof is a musical with music by Jerry Bock, lyrics by Sheldon Harnick, and book by Joseph Stein, set in Imperial Russia in 1905. The story centers on Tevye, the father of five daughters, and his attempts to maintain his Jewish religious and cultural traditions, as outside influences encroach upon the family's lives. He must cope both with the strong-willed actions of his three older daughters, who wish to marry for love – each one's choice of a husband moves further away from the customs of his faith – and with the edict of the Tsar that evicts the Jews from their village. The original Broadway production of the show, which opened in 1964, had the first musical theatre run in history to surpass 3,000 performances. Because it is such a popular show, Huntington North decided to present it as the spring musical. The show includes 100+ students as members of the cast, various crews, and orchestra. Show Dates: April 23, 24, 25 @ 7:30 p.m. in the HNHS Auditorium. General admission tickets are $8.00 and are available from the cast members. Tickets will also be sold at the box office prior to the evening's show The freshmen Viking New Tech students enjoyed an Etiquette Luncheon at Huntington University. Joy Kinsey was the guest speaker and the students learned how to conduct themselves in a professional manner while attending a business luncheon. This was made possible through a HCCF Classroom Education Grant and a Teachers Credit Union grant. The 2015 DEKA yearbook is now on sale. The delivery price next year will be $70, but for a limited time it is on sale for $65. This sale runs until April 24, so do not miss out on this once in a lifetime keepsake that captures the memories and happenings at Huntington North during the 2014-15 school year. ORDER NOW!
