GLENVIEW ! 847-998-5040 http://ho.glenview34.org HO - NWEA Testing May 20 - 29 FROM THE PRINCIPALS DESK… Dear Hoffman Family, Who are the people at our school keeping the classrooms clean, repairing the building, maintaining the grounds, preparing lunch, taking your child’s temperature, coordinating attendance, receiving phone calls and channeling them in the proper direction, organizing registration, and performing all of the other services so absolutely necessary to the operation of Hoffman School? They are known as the support staff. These wonderful people are aptly named because they provide support that classroom teachers and students need. With their help, the process of learning can be accomplished not only more efficiently, but also in an atmosphere that is warm, pleasant, challenging, and conducive to education. Not since the demise of the one-room school has it been possible or practical to expect teachers to prepare lessons, teach classes, grade papers, record student progress, communicate with parents, clean the classroom, patch the roof, fix the equipment, prepare lunch, and answer the telephone. In order to provide students with a quality education, teachers and administrators need a complement of support personnel to perform these necessary services. Our students must have clean classrooms in safe, well-maintained buildings, surrounded by people who are trained to provide the kinds of services that will make their education experience a success. As dedicated members of the educational team, the school support staff does just that! Without them it would be extremely difficult to give our students the kind of education they deserve. A very special thanks to the following support staff whose efforts contribute significantly to the warm, positive, and productive climate that we all value and enjoy at Hoffman School. The following guidelines have been shared with your child and serves as a standard so that Hoffman School continues to be a place where learning can occur with the least amount of distractions. We politely ask you to support these guidelines in your conversations at home: 1. Shorts – no cutoffs or torn or ripped clothing. When students are standing up with their arms down at their side, shorts should be longer than their fingertips. 2. Tank tops – really should not be worn. If they are worn, there should be a shirt worn under or over it. 3. No clothing which exposes your midriff. 4. No hats may be worn inside school. 5. Your clothing must not distract you or others from the learning process. Clothing with alcoholic, smoking, drugrelated, vulgar, or violent expressions/messages/pictures will not be tolerated. Students wearing clothes of this nature will contact their parent with Mr. Walther to bring an alternative article of clothing to school. 6. Given the age group of our children, wearing make-up in school is not appropriate. A child wearing make-up will be asked to wash his/her face. (This also includes temporary hair colorings). 7. No toys may be brought to school. 8. No flip-flops may be worn at school. Thank you for your continued adherence to these standards. __________________________________________________________________________ REMINDER REGISTRATION DEADLINE WAS MAY 15 Registration for Glenview School District 34 students is completed online. This is a fun celebration for our 5th grade children as they “graduate” from Hoffman and move to Middle School! The 5th grade picnic starts with a parade of classes and a speech by Mr. Walther. Next, a few Hoffman “alums” currently in High School will speak to our children. Then, let the games begin! Lunch will be served in the Johns Park Field House after the games. This is a great opportunity for Moms and Dads to help out! Please email Marcy Pettersen@ [email protected] if you can volunteer your time to this great event. Volunteer Opportunities: 8:30-11:30am Volunteers needed to run games and help take down games (we will give you all the necessary instructions). We will also need escorts to make sure that the kids are heading to the correct activity, as we are sticking to a precise schedule. 10:45am -12:15pm Lunch set up, serve lunch and clean up. How can I take the pressure off my children and let them have some fun without their good behavior suffering? A: It may be time to reevaluate your view of discipline. Remember, setting and enforcing rules isn’t about preventing children from having fun – it’s about teaching them to behave appropriately and respect limits. Because effective discipline is so critical to their overall well-being, it’s important that you not throw your rules out the window just because the kids are on break from school. Instead, why not modify some of your house rules to make them more compatible with the family’s summer schedule? Although the essential rules (for example, no hitting, no cursing) should always apply, here are two areas that can probably withstand a little summertime tweaking: - Bedtime. You shouldn’t do away with a set bedtime, but it’s okay to push it back a little. Go ahead and give the kids an extra half-hour or 45 minutes, but be consistent about enforcing it. That way, they’ll be prepared for the regular school-year bedtime next fall. - Chores. Having your children do most of their chores on the weekend makes sense during the school year, but not necessarily over the summer break. If they balk at the idea of a Saturday spent mopping and dusting, let them complete their tasks throughout the week. Be sure to draw up a chore chart, though, to prevent misunderstandings and meltdowns. MAKE YOUR SATURDAYS COUNT “Well, Hello there! My name is Tom,” said the elderly man as he took the aisle seat. “I’m Rich,” said the man seated next to the window working on his laptop. He had so much to get done on the flight to Orlando. He hoped this old man wouldn’t talk all the way there. “Planning on working during the flight?” asked Tom. “Yeah, I want to catch up on a few things before we land,” said Rich. “You do know it’s Saturday,” said Tom. “What does that have to do with anything,” asked Rich. “Work is work.” “I was like that in my younger days. Worked for a big company. Traveled a lot. Missed most of my son’s Little League games,” said Tom with a sigh. “But when I was 55, I realized that the average person lives to be about 75. If you multiply 75 by 52, the number of weeks there are in a year, you get 3,900. That’s 3,900 Saturdays you can spend with your family doing things that matter. It occurred to me that I only had about a thousand of those days left.” “So what did you do?” asked Rich. “I went to a toy store and bought all the marbles they had. I had to go to several stores just to get 1,000 --- one for each Saturday until my 75th birthday. I had marbles in jars all over my study!” “What did you do with the marbles?” “Every Saturday, I’ve removed one marble from a jar to remind me to make the day count. And each year, I’ve made a stepping-stone for my garden with the marbles that I’ve spent. It’s amazing how quickly you go from thinking you have so much time to realizing you have so little. As a matter of fact, this is my last one,” Tom said as he held up a blue marble for Rich to admire. “What will you do now? Asked Rich. “Each day we have is a precious gift. I’m going to make sure that I live each day to the fullest. The question is, what will you do now?” Rich looked at the marble in the palm of Tom’s hand. “I think it’s time to figure out how many marbles I need to buy.” _______________________________________________________________________________________________ TIP Summer is almost here----almost. This means that school is still in session! Before your child falls too far into “vacation mode,” have a serious discussion with her. Let her know that you expect her to continue to follow school rules, take her homework seriously, listen in class and treat her teacher and classmates with respect. By finishing strong in the spring, she’ll be more likely to start strong next fall. Memo From Your Child To: Parents 1. Don't spoil me. I know quite well that I ought not to have all I ask for -‐ I'm only testing you. 2. Don't be afraid to be firm with me. I prefer it. It makes me feel more secure. 3. Don't let me form bad habits. I have to rely on you to detect them in the early stages. 4. Don't make me feel smaller than I am. It only makes me behave stupidly "big". 5. Don't correct me in front of people if you can help it. I'll take much more notice if you talk quietly with me in private. 6. Don't make me feel that my mistakes are sin. It upsets my sense of value. 7. Don't protect me from consequences. I need to learn the painful way sometimes. 8. Don't be upset when I say, "I hate you." It isn't you I hate, but your power to thwart me. 9. Don't nag. If you do, I have to protect myself by appearing deaf. 10. Don't take too much notice of my small ailments. Sometimes, they get me the attention I need. 11. Don't make rash promises. Remember I feel badly let down when promises are broken. 12. Don't be inconsistent. That completely confuses me and makes me lose faith in you. 13. Don't put me off when I ask questions. If you do, you will find that I stop asking and seek my information elsewhere. 14. Don't ever suggest that you are perfect or infallible. It gives me too great a shock when I discover that you are neither. 15. Don't forget I love experimenting. I could not get on without it, so please put up with me. 16. Don't forget how quickly I am growing up. It must be very difficult for you to keep pace with me, but please try. 17. Don't forget that I can't thrive without lots of understanding love, but I don't need to tell you, do I? 18. Don’t tell me my fears are silly. They are terribly real and you can do much to reassure me if you try to understand. 19. Don’t ever think it is beneath your dignity to apologize to me. An honest apology makes me feel surprisingly warm towards you. 20. Please keep yourself fit and healthy. I need you!
