The UIC School of Public Health invites all students, alumni, faculty, staff and friends to
celebrate National Public Health Week 2015! Join us for a week of dynamic
programs that demonstrate the breadth of public health issues impacting our
communities.
PHSA Social Media Contest
Ready for those selfies to start paying off? How? It's easy! The Public Health Student
Association is encouraging you to Instagram or Facebook a photo that represents
Public Health and what it means to you. Use the #UICNPHW2015 and you could be
randomly selected to win a Fitbit! Keep in mind that in order for photos to be seen, your
Instagram and Facebook accounts should be set to “public” during NPHW.

10th Annual Student Research and Practice Awards Day
Join us to recognize and celebrate student research at the 10th Annual SPH Research
and Practice Awards Day. Undergraduate, Master’s, and Doctoral students will
compete for awards in the following categories: Research, Practice, Global Health,
Maternal and Child Health, and Translational Science. Participants are judged on
abstract submission, poster design, and oral presentation. Posters will be on display in
the gymnasium, and many students will be in attendance to answer questions about
their work. Scholarships and awards endowed by alumni and friends will be presented
during an afternoon Awards Ceremony following the poster viewing.

World Health Day: Program Launch of “living global health”
– Luncheon and Discussion
"living global health” is an accessible social conversation about the realities of our
health, globally, through our own personal stories and reflections. Beginning April 7,
2015 (World Health Day), we are providing a platform to share our stories. We will be
prompting the world to respond to a series of questions, Real Voices, that are directed
at a global audience, as individuals. Through this initiative we will gather real voices
from individuals everywhere in order to raise awareness and begin a truly global
conversation through social media about health equity. Come for lunch and join the
conversation!

Film Screening: Prison Terminal
Join us for a free screening of the 2014 Academy Award Nominated documentary
Prison Terminal: The Last Days of Private Jack Hall. This powerful film chronicles the
damaging impact incarceration has on families, including the ultimate dilemma faced by
the incarcerated - death behind bars. Edgar Barens, the film’s director and faculty
member at UIC’s Jane Addams College of Social Work, will be present for a discussion
post screening. Snacks will be served.

UIC Minority Health Conference
The UIC School of Public Health’s Office of Diversity and Inclusion is again co-hosting
the Minority Health Conference. The conference, titled “Building Action-Orientated
Community Partnerships in Public Health,” aims to develop and support scholarship
and innovative interventions surrounding health inequities that plague minority
communities. Dr. Amani Nuru-Jeter, a social epidemiologist from the University of
California-Berkeley School of Public Health, will deliver the keynote address, which will
be followed by a plethora of workshops that represent the various communities most
affected by health inequities and a multidisciplinary lunch panel.

Annual Alumni Celebration
Tickets are now on sale for the 2015 Annual Alumni Celebration! Come join the UIC
School of Public Health community for a night of celebrating the accomplishments of
fellow alumni, catching up with old friends and making new connections. With nearly
200 guests at last year’s celebration, we’re returning to Galleria Marchetti for another
fun-filled evening! The evening will include a networking reception, silent auction, 3course plated dinner (kosher option available), and awards ceremony. Silent auction

Ruth French Lecture Featuring Dr. Kelly McGonigal
Come out for the Ruth French Lecture during National Public Health Week! Presented by
Stanford health psychologist Kelly McGonigal, PhD, whose TED Talk has been viewed mo
than 7 million times. Dr. McGonigal will reveal the neuroscience behind behavior change.
You’ll get new ideas for helping clients and patients adopt healthy new habits that stick.

About the Ruth French Lecture
The Ruth French Lecture is endowed in the UIC College of Applied Health Sciences. In
2015, the lecture is generously co-hosted by UIC's College of Dentistry, College of
