From the Principal’s Desk
Dear Parents,
Welcome back to the start of Term 2, I hope everyone
is well rested and looking forward to a fun and purpose
filled Term. I know that it is another bumper packed and
busy term that lies ahead of all of us. This holiday saw
16 of our High School students, Ms Alice Hello and myself head off to Avignon (France) on our first ever
French Language and Culture Exchange programme
with Jean Vilar High School. What an amazing experience for everyone as our French students had the opportunity to take what they had learnt in class and use it in a real life situation. My
sincere thanks go to the entire team for ensuring that we upheld the name of
ISHB and made the most of this wonderful opportunity. In addition, we await
news from Praleena Mudley (IBDP2 student) on her CAS (Creativity, Action, Service) experience with Operation Smile in Madagascar - she returns this weekend.
The term also kicked off with the entire class of PYP4 and 5 students (and staff)
heading off on camp to Stellenbosch. From all accounts so far they are all having
a great time and thoroughly enjoying themselves. My sincere thanks to the staff
who have accompanied the students on this 3 day leadership camp.
Next week, as part of our commitment to continued staff professional development, 5 HS staff members will be traveling to Dubai for specific face to face subject training in IB Diploma Subjects. The following staff will be away; Mrs Sue
Souter (IB Biology), Ms Ashley Elkington (IB Mathematical Studies), Mrs Leslie
Field (IB English Language and Literature), Ms Kerri-Lyn Brown (IB Mathematics
HL) and myself (IB History). We are looking forward to a wonderful professional
development experience.
Staff Updates
This term we welcomed Mr Bruce Coomer to the Primary School for Music, PE
and ESL and welcomed back to ISHB Ms Francoise Goosen who returned to
EY2. Ms Krystle Kabbabe (our Venezuelan Spanish teacher) will finally join us on
11 May, when we will say good bye to Mr Jason Milbank who has been substituting in her capacity until the appropriate visa's were granted for Ms Kabbabe. At
the end of the term we will say goodbye to Mrs Christine Dreyfus (PS French)
who will return to France, and to Mrs Catherine Slabber (PYP5) who will be taking up a post in Dubai later this year. In addition, Ms Alice Hello (HS French) will
depart in Term 3 to relocate to the United Kingdom. We have started advertising
these positions and I will communicate replacements as soon as I am able to do
so. We are also re-advertising the HS Vice Principal position again and will hopefully announce a suitable candidate during the course of this term.
Kind regards,
Grant Ruskovich

Winter Sports
As we enter our winter sports season, by far our busiest sports season, we have lots to look forward
to, with regular match fixtures and weekly practices.
As we are kicking things off this coming Monday (20 April), we urge you to get all the correct equipment for the sports. For hockey, netball and soccer, all players will have to wear appropriate sports
shoes. Especially for netball, as there will be a strict, "No school shoes" policy on the new courts.
Therefore, children who are not dressed appropriately will not be able to play. Soccer boots are not a
necessity and children will be able to participate wearing trainers. All children who are signed up for
hockey are expected to have a hockey stick, and shin pads are recommended.
Sportmans Warehouse or Mr Price Sport is your best bet to acquire equipment at a reasonable price.
School PE uniform is to be worn at all practices; children who are not dressed in the correct uniform
will not be taking part. We look forward to another successful winter season at ISHB.

Request!
Dear Parents and Students,
I am an IB Art student, and am currently working on
a large scaleinstallation piece, for which I need
glass jars. I am therefore kindly asking for your support: If you have any spare, clean glass jars at
home that you are willing to donate please drop
them off at Reception
by Thursday, 23 May. The size of the glass jar does
not matter –anything goes!
Thanking you in advance,
Tatjana Thunert

Jean Vilar French Exchange
During the April holidays, 16 of the French students
embarked on an exchange to Avignon in the South of
France. We spent 10 days with our exchange students from the Jean Villar High School who were part
of the EU program at their school. While we were
there, we visited the towns of Avignon, Marseille,
Nimes and Arles. We went white water rafting in the
Gorge du Verdon where the majority of our shoes got
wet, which wasn‟t too pleasant but the overall experience was great. We were also guests of honor at the
annual Language Day at the local Primary School.
After Avignon we departed to Paris for a day and a
half where we visited very beautiful historical sights
such as the Eiffel Tower, The Louvre, the Arc de Triumph, Notre Dam, Sacre Coeur and best of all Starbucks! This trip wouldn‟t have been possible without
all the effort that Madame Hello and Mr.Ruskovich
put in, and thanks for putting up with us!!
We look forward to welcoming our Friends from
France in September.

One Act Plays 2015
The last two weeks of Term 1 were, for the ISHB Community pretty
hectic. However, once again the students came to the fore, and
after 7 weeks of rehearsals managed to pull off a fabulous fun, entertaining evening of One Act Plays. It is the fourth time that we
have held the plays in the Mainstream Amphitheatre, and even
though initially the weather looked a little inclement, the moon rose,
and the stars above and on stage, shone!
The theme for this year was SPOOF, and the directors chose plays
well-suited to their casts. Opening the evening was CHAPMAN‟S
Dinner Date - Take Two, a fun take on blind dating. Directed by
Benjamin Rideout and Nina Janse van Rensberg, it was a fabulous
way to begin the competition, with quirky characters and fabulous
characterisations. DISA followed with a challenging spoof on Law
and Order - in this case a Fairy Tale Unit. The large cast of 14 was
well directed by Aedan Dilley and ably assisted by Bonnie Ahmet.
The clever script and well-timed puns delighted the audience together with the fun costumes and great attention to detail in the
characterisations.
After interval, DUNGEONS took to the boards and wowed the audience with their imaginative rendition of 10 Ways to Survive a Zombie Apocalypse. So impressed were the judges with the direction by
Erin Gemmell, the fantastic Zombie make-up by Morgan Flowerday,
the effective use of sound effects, music and lighting, and the great
characters, that they walked away with Most Promising Junior
(Romancia Shaduka), Best Director, Best Technical Production and
Best Production! Well done Erin and DUNGEONS!
However, perhaps the most “intellectual” of the plays of the evening
was from SENTINEL. An Actor’s Nightmare was not only directed
but also starred Daniel Bartlett - an actor who stumbles upon a
stage and has to perform in four plays he knows very little about.
His tour de force performance well earned him the accolade of Best
Actor and his co-actress, Daniella Paioni the Best Actress award.
Our judges, all ISHB alumni, Amy Wood, Stuart Brown and Alanna
Wells did us all proud in their articulate and spot on observations.
The packed out auditorium was a perfect venue and as I looked
around during the course of the evening, I was delighted to see so
many smiles on so many faces.
Huge thanks needs to go to all of the cast and crew who helped to
make the evening so slick and to Lesley Field and Kelly Brooker
who encouraged and helped with rehearsals. A very special thank
you to our wonderful Head of Creativity, Nina Goetz, who picked up
so many responsibilities with such aplomb!

Hout Bay Real Madrid Social School
I am very pleased to have the opportunity to introduce you to
the Hout Bay Real Madrid Foundation. The Real Madrid
Foundation believes that sport fosters social integration and
the promotion of ethical values such as solidarity, participation, team spirit, respect for one‟s opponent and nondiscrimination. This is, first and foremost, a comprehensive
social development and integration programme aimed at improving character, leadership and life skills, including elements of literacy and numeracy and promoting healthy and
productive lifestyle choices among the children and youth of
Hout Bay. There is a significant opportunity to support other
community football structures in Hout Bay, but it is not the objective of Real Madrid to create a competitive team.
Thanks to IES and the International School of Hout Bay we
have the opportunity to offer students aged between 8 and 14 years old, registered with schools in
Hout Bay, the opportunity to become part of this exciting project. Students and their parents who are
offered the opportunity to participate in this project will be expected to uphold the ideals of the project and commit to the educational programme. They will be provided with the facilities, athletic kits
and educational materials needed to participate fully in the programme which will begin this term
and run throughout the year.
Both the athletic programme and the Academic and Life Skills programme will run concurrently at
the International School of Hout Bay. The Athletic programme will be managed and designed by Mr.
Nicholas Ndaba and Mr. Ricardo Phillips, they are both highly experienced and well-regarded football coaches and committed to youth development in Hout Bay. They will be supported by Bongani
Mhamhe, Thulani Mkoyo, Johannes Henkel and Panduleni Shaduka. The Academic and Life Skills
programme will be managed and designed by myself, supported by other experts in the fields of
leadership, literacy and numeracy and in full support of the efforts of the YLACK team, a local NGO,
one of whom is our very own Lifa Mongwe. The whole programme will be externally monitored by
the Real Madrid Foundation, to whom biannual reports will be submitted.
We look forward to a long and wonderful
journey.
Kindest regards,
Mr. Daniel Landi
