JOB DESCRIPTION Research Associate Vacancy Ref: A1232 Job Title: Research Associate Department/College: Present Grade: 6P Sociology Directly responsible to: Dr Imogen Tyler Supervisory responsibility for: N/A Other contacts Internal: other academic staff Sociology External: A national level stigma research network to be established as part of the post-holders role with Dr Imogen Tyler Purpose Under the direction of Dr Tyler, to undertake administration and research to meet the specified aims of the Philip Leverhulme Prize/ Research Project on Rethinking the Sociology of Stigma https://socialabjection.wordpress.com/2014/10/25/rethinking-the-sociology-of-stigma-in-thetransition-to-postwelfare-states/ While this post is specifically to support Dr Tyler’s research, it is also postdoctoral level position that represents significant opportunities for career progression in a world-leading Sociology Department, including mentoring from Dr Tyler, and development of own research interests and academic publication profile. Major Duties: 1. To develop further the literature review on stigma (across sociology, psychology, disability studies, political economy, welfare, social policy, social theory and related fields), 2. To conduct research on stigma in the context of neoliberal/post-welfare state formations (focusing on the UK). 3. To create a wordpress site for the research project and assist with updating Imogen’s research pages 4. To help create the stigma research network and assist with organising research meetings of the network (at least one in first year) including administration involved with this 5. To participate in project meetings with Dr Imogen Tyler (weekly) as well as connecting with the other researchers within the field. 6. To participate in relevant networks more broadly 7. Creation and leading/administration of social media accounts and other forms of public dissemination 8. Preparation and presentation of talks 9. To undertake field work (interviews) – to be determined 10. To undertake any necessary methods training (possibly in visual methods, film-making) 11. To write and or contribute to writing accessible publications (such as for online blogs and zines) 12. To author academic articles (some with Dr Imogen Tyler) 13. To engage external stakeholders (charitable bodies, activist organisations, media orgs., think tanks – ie. SARF- etc) 14. To participate in the writing of follow-on research grant proposals that build on the results of the Rethinking the Sociology of Stigma project. 15. To undertake in a timely fashion routine administrative tasks associated with the project, as requested by Dr Imogen Tyler. 16. To work within the strategic direction of the University as a whole and the University’s code of ethics and practice guidelines. 17. To participate in and contribute more broadly to the work of the Sociology Department.
