Technical Data Sheet on Phenyltrimethicone Appearance of Phenyl Trimethicone Structural formula of Phenyl Trimethicone Phenyl trimethicone is a polymer substance, liquid silicone widely used in cosmetic industry. In different formulations (not only cosmetic) this silicone serves as an antifoaming agent which inhibits the formation of foam even if shaking. On their optical properties (refractive index) is a substance similar to hair. Thanks to this phenyl trimethicone when applied to the hair instantly increases their brilliance, gives a glossy and well-groomed appearance. This property is widely applicable in sprays for shine. Besides phenyl trimethicone improves the hair texture and makes it silky by touch (this effect is particularly noticeable on chemically damaged hair). This component additionally provides heat protection properties to cosmetic products for hair. Phenyl trimethicone is an excellent conditioning component not only for hair, but also for skin. As the component in cosmetic products it spreads easily over the skin and hair and forms non-greasy and nonsticky film that prevents the loss of moisture from the surface. Therefore, it is used in creams and lotions for skin, shampoos and hair conditioners (including non-washable conditioners and thermal protection products for hair. We should also note that the film of phenyl trimethicone protects the hair and skin from moisture loss the same as from moisture penetration. This ensures a waterproof effect of some products, such as sun protection products for hair and skin. It is combined with UV-filters (even dissolves them) and increase sun protection properties of products (SPF). The film of phenyl trimethicone, as already mentioned, is impermeable to water, but permeable to gases, so the skin under such film breathes. Phenyl trimethicone is included often in composition of antiperspirants wax-, oil- and alcohol based, where it is used to prevent the formation of white spots. Phenyl trimethicone in local application is considered to be the safe ingredient and approved for use in cosmetic industry. Only in very rare cases, this component can cause the allergy. Phenyl trimethicone is water insoluble, but washed out completely with shampoos containing Lauryl Sulfate, Laureth Sulfate or Cocamidopropil Betaine. Phenyl trimethicone Description: polyphenylmethylsiloxane which improves the effect of many cosmetic products. INCI: Phenyl trimethicone Appearance: clear liquid Manufacturing country: Hungary Recommended concentration: 1 - 10% (often up to 50%) Terms of use: added to cooled cream. Solubility: water insoluble. Soluble in 95% alcohol at ambient temperature. Compatible with oils. Storage conditions: at ambient temperature or in cool place. Brief description Application in face and body care products Phenyl trimethicone is used in hair care products, emulsions and decorative cosmetics. Provides non-oily skin softening, creates waterproof coating, increases the SPF of sun protection products. Allows skin to breathe. Makes hair shiny and soft, protects from heat (hair dryers). As a component of lipstick makes lips glossy. Inhibits perspiration. - used as waterproof component (sun lotions) - used as active component in sun protection creams, increases SPF - used to reduce the tackiness and stickiness in creams and lotions for the skin (shaving creams and lotions) - facilitates a uniform distribution of active ingredients on the skin surface - prevents whitening effect of deodorant whitish spots on the skin and clothes - perspiration inhibitor (reduces perspiration) Characteristics - easily emulsified - good compatible with different cosmetic ingredients - facilitates mixing silicones and organic components, which are poorly mixable with each other. - facilitates introducing in compositions cyclomethicone and dimethicone to improve the stability of the product and additional softening. - provides softening, easily applied on skin surface, no oil effect - does not prevent the natural skin secretion through the soft invisible film - has good anti-sticking and anti-clumping performance. - color and smell free Recommended concentration for use To provide noticeable shine use 1% phenyl trimethicone in hair serum or spray. Antiperspirants: 5-10% Hair sprays: 0,5-20% Sun protection lotions: 2-8% Hair serums: 1-20% Creams and lotions: 2-5% Lipsticks: 1-3% Application as a component of decorative cosmetics - high brilliance and gloss effect (phenyl trimethicone has most glossy effect in comparison with other silicones) - provides glossy effect to lipsticks and lip glosses - as a component for powdered cosmetics Application in shampoos, serums, conditioners - makes hair shine and soft, facilitates hair styling - evenly distributed over the surface of the hair, coats hair core and smooth hair scales - reduce harmful effect of high temperature during hair drying and styling - used as the component of hair sprays, conditioners, other hair care products to provide shine effect to hair.
