Hupačasath First Nation is seeking a Parks and Recreation assistant — Part-time seasonal (May to
September). This role provides assistance to the manager doing parks site visits to various campsites to
carry out contracted maintenance services on behalf of the Province of BC in accordance with the
Provinces schedules and Parks services criteria. This position assists with the upkeep of the grounds for
the office building and band rental housing units. This role also helps complete reports and schedules
required to report to the Province of BC on the park sites condition rating.
Duties:
TRAIL MAINTENANCE
The successful person will provide assist with providing Trail maintenance to sites as directed in the sites
schedule:
•
Provide user safety.
•
Protect the environment.
•
Provide user access and convenience.
•
Protect investments.

Trail Maintenance Priorities
•
Safety considerations should always be the first priority. Unsafe conditions should be
corrected or normal use restricted.
•
Environmental and trail damage should be corrected and actions taken to prevent further
damage.
•
User convenience should be considered.

Preseason Trail Maintenance
Signs—all signs will be checked prior to the season of operation to ensure they are in place and
visible and any additional signs required Conduct minor repairs and stain/paint trail signs as
required.
Deadfall—on a priority basis cut out windfall/deadfall over the trail, remove wood a minimum of
0.5 meter from the tread centre and dispose downhill when possible.

Brushing—on a priority basis remove ail juvenile trees and woody brush for 0.5 metre on either
side of tread centre within 3 centimeters of ground level. Scatter the cut material out of sight of
the trail.
•
Erosion control—clean-out and repair any existing water bars and ditches as necessary to drain
water away from the trail and prevent erosion.
•
Route marking—mark obscure routes with flagging or delineating tags as required.
•
Litter clean-up—remove litter and garbage at the trailhead and along the trail.
•
Limbing—remove tree limbs to allow 2.5 meters of overhead clearance above the trail, with
1.0¬1.5 meters total clearance width. Scatter cut limbs a minimum of 1.0 meter from the trail
edge, out of sight where possible. Ensure limbing cuts are clean, without scarring the main trunk
of the tree.

Trail tread maintenance
•
Drain/harden mud holes and boggy areas.
•
Complete washout and/or slump repair.
•
Grub rocks, roots, stumps as necessary to allow grooming during operating season. Undertake
surface repair as required.

Routine Trail Maintenance
Routine trail maintenance should include:
Vegetation
•
Brush clearing, including removal of hazardous branches.
•
Windfall removal_
•
Hazard tree identification (report to recreation officer).
•
Viewpoint maintenance.
•
Close off unwanted trails and shortcuts, and restore vegetation.
•
Assessment of the following drainage structures for potential blockage:
•
Culverts.
•
Cross drains.
•
Water-bars.
•
Grade dips.
•
Drainage ditches.
•
Inspection and monitoring of the following structures for signs of wear or disrepair:
•
Bridges.
•
Cribbing & retaining walls.
•
Barriers and handrails.
•
Shelters.
•
Signs
•
Sign repair.
•
Sign replacement.
•
Cairn repair.
•
Barricade or closure device repair.

•
Trail marker replacement or additions.
Trail tread
Draining/hardening of mud holes and boggy areas.
Washout repair.
Slump repair.
Grubbing rocks, roots, stumps.
Turnpike section repair.
Surface repair and removal of loose rocks.
Surface replenishment (similar or minimal maintenance material).
Repair or eliminate known trail hazards when possible. Report natural hazards as they become
known during maintenance visits, such as river/creek crossings, slides/washouts and hazard
trees to the local forest district office. Make all reasonable efforts to ensure users do not enter
the trail head, if, in your opinion, the trail is unsafe due to existing or potential hazards.

MAINTENANCE AND MANAGEMENT OF HUTS AND CABINS
Maintenance of huts and cabins associated with agreement area will include:
Thoroughly sweeping all inside and outside floors.
Ensure all exterior and interior areas are litter free.
Inspect stove and chimneys for damage or wear.
Ensure pertinent information about the operation of the cabin and associated trails, including
fees for cabin or trail use, are clearly posted for the public.
Management of huts and cabins associated with agreement area shall be:
Used for non-profit recreational use and remain open to the public.
Available for other compatible recreational use in the area.
Shall not be restricted for public use nor shall undue influence be extended to join a club.

General Maintenance
This role will also provide assistance to the maintenance department assisting with maintenance of the
rental units and the Band office grounds and equipment

Yard Maintenance for Elders (mowing lawns, brush clearing, moss removal, etc.)
Community Maintenance (mowing of lawns and picking up garbage associated with our rental
units, community hall, park area, etc.)
Building cleaning and maintenance projects like staining, sealing wood, repairs
Qualifications

At least 19 years of age
Driver license is required
Qualify for summer student funding
Undergraduate degree or technical diploma in Natural Resource Management, Outdoor
Recreation Management or related field (related field may include: Biology, Geology, Geography,
Resource Management, Recreational Planning, Outdoor Recreation, Forestry, Fisheries, etc.); or,
Completed first year (minimum) related degree or diploma (as above); and 6 months related
experience (related experience can include: Park system (operations), conservation, outdoor
recreation, forestry, any earth sciences, recreation planning, public safety / enforcement etc.);
Have secondary school graduation or equivalent and 2 years related Grade 12 and a minimum of
three years related experience.
