As we approach the holiday season, The Bulletin would like to hear from anyone who could occasionally offer a few hours a month to cover for regular deliverers who take a holiday. If you would be prepared to be part of the ‘relief’ team, please On Tuesday morning I went outside around 6am to find a baby tawny owl sat on our back doorstep, as it obviously didn't have its adult feathers I knew it couldn't fly but it appeared uninjured. I rang Wildlife Welfare who agreed to take it. I met the manager half way to Scarborough with the owl. He explained that if it had been left alone there is no way the baby owl could get back into the nest and more than likely it would be taken by a fox or cat, it had in all likelihood fallen from the nest and appeared a healthy two-week-old tawny owl, possibly female. email: [email protected] or ring Yvonne on: 01377 202140 Two mornings later a second owl is sat at the back door! This time the Wildlife Welfare manager came out to see if he could locate from where the baby owls had fallen. There is no obvious nest over our garden and their origin is still unknown. The siblings have been reunited and will be reared by the very knowledgeable Animal House Wildlife Welfare at Scarborough. Article Contributions The Bulletin team were delighted to receive the article about the baby tawny owls. If you have a story to tell, please consider sending it to The Bulletin. We do like to keep a good balance between interesting reading, event information and advertising. We often hear owls down here in Southgate but have never actually seen the tawnys only the barn owls. If any of our readers would like to write a regular column on a topic of general interest, please get in touch. We would be delighted to hear from some of the younger people in Hutton Cranswick, in addition to the varied items we receive from school. The photo shows the lovely picture of the siblings reunited at Animal House. It still remains a mystery as to where they have actually fallen from! Sharon In the first instance, please email: The photo shows the tawny owl siblings when they were reunited at Animal House. [email protected] … and to show that the youngsters can be perceptive … Any readers who would like to follow the owls’ progress can do so on Facebook. One day a little girl was sitting and watching her mother do the dishes at the kitchen sink. She suddenly noticed that her mother had several strands of white hair sticking out in contrast on her brunette head. She looked at her mother and inquisitively asked, 'Why are some of your hairs white, Mum?' Thank you to Sharon for sending us this interesting story. Her mother replied, 'Well, every time that you do something wrong and make me cry or unhappy, one of my hairs turns white.' Animal House Wildlife Welfare (Scarborough) is Registered Charity 1059674 specialising in the rehoming and rehabilitation of unwanted or injured birds of prey. Tel: 07581219803. Email: [email protected] The little girl thought about this revelation for a while and then said, 'Mummy, how come ALL of grandma's hairs are white?' 5 THE BENEFICE OF HUTTON CRANSWICK WITH SKERNE, WATTON AND BESWICK AND THE BENEFICE OF NAFFERTON WITH WANSFORD MINISTRY TEAM Revd Brian Lees Revd Hilary Boon Mrs Gwyneth Southall Mrs Caroline Lees Miss Trish Barker Mr Martin Adams Mr Marc Voase Mrs Sue Nichol Priest in Charge 01377 270806 Associate Priest 01377 202084 Reader 01377 253572 Reader 01377 270806 Reader 01377 270091 Reader-in-Training 01377 270120 Recognised Parish Assistant Recognised Parish Assistant CHURCHWARDENS St Peter's, Hutton Cranswick Mr Andrew Pickles Mr Martin Adams 01377 270474 01377 270120 From the Parish Registers St Leonard's, Skerne Mrs Margaret Brennand Mr Nick Minns 01377 251257 01377 255600 St Mary's, Watton Mr Tony Pexton Mrs Joanne Blacker 01377 270281 01377 270228 St Margaret's, Beswick Mr John Duggleby 01377 270229 All Saints, Nafferton Mr Michael Anderson 01377 254410 St Mary's, Wansford Mr John Seaton 01377 255592 Holy Baptism At All Saints’, Nafferton Poppy Yeadon on 3rd May 2015 ***** Funerals At All Saints’, Nafferton Harry Slater, aged 94, on 24th April 2015 Joan Shawcross, on 15th May 2015 Anyone wishing to arrange: a wedding - please contact Revd Brian Lees a baptism - please contact Revd Hilary Boon The last Night of the Proms Hutton Cranswick Sports & Recreation Association Centre Saturday 18 July In aid of St Peter’s Church 6 Services for June 2015 June 7th 1st Sunday after Trinity 8.00 Holy Communion Beswick 8.30 Holy Communion by extension Wansford 9.15 Holy Communion Skerne 10.00 Family Service Nafferton 10.45 Family Service with Baptism Hutton Cranswick 6.00 Evensong Watton 6.30 Evensong Hutton Cranswick June14th 2nd Sunday after Trinity 8.00 Holy Communion Beswick 8.30 Morning Prayer Wansford 9.00 Holy Communion Watton 9.15 Holy Communion by extension Skerne 10.00 Holy Communion Nafferton 10.45 Holy Communion Hutton Cranswick 6.30 Evensong Hutton Cranswick June 21st 3rd Sunday after Trinity 8.00 Holy Communion Beswick 9.15 Holy Communion Skerne 10.00 Morning Praise Wansford (Joint service with All Saints’, Nafferton) 10.45 Family Communion Hutton Cranswick 6.00 Evensong Watton 6.30 Evensong Hutton Cranswick June 25th 7.00 LINK (at Cranswick Methodist Chapel) June 28th 4th Sunday after Trinity 8.30 Holy Communion Wansford 9.00 Holy Communion Watton 9.15 Holy Communion by extension Skerne 10.00 Holy Communion Nafferton 10.45 Family Service with Baptism Hutton Cranswick 10.45 Family Service Beswick 6.30 Deanery Confirmation Service Hutton Cranswick Dear friends, technology is a wonderful thing until it goes wrong; then it becomes frustrating, if not a liability. It’s also important to know how to use it correctly. This morning I tried to print a document without selecting it. (I am the bane of my husband’s life!) This set me thinking! Texts and emails are brilliant as we can contact lots of people at once, but they can’t convey the tone of voice and so can cause offence where none was intended. It’s also easy to forget that not everyone has email and so some may be left out of the loop when sending messages. Not good if it’s important that all receive the message. Another issue with emails is that many people can access ‘work’ emails at home, so instead of spending time with friends and family away from the work place, emails are 7 being checked. Work becomes 24/7, instead of the hours intended, impacting upon our personal time and thus family and/or friends’ time. All relationships need work for them to thrive. If we don’t spend time with people, how are we to know what they think, whether they like the same things as we do, whether we can have a conversation with them? It’s all part of the ‘getting to know you’ process. This is one way to make friends, and if we are truly fortunate, we may still be friends into our old age. If we value our relationship with God, we need to put in some time and effort. We need time to read his words, talk with him in prayer and listen to him, if our relationship is to deepen and grow. Why is this important? At the moment our farmers are particularly busy looking after their animals and crops, trying to ensure a good yield. If they did nothing, their stock would become ill and some die and their fields would be full of weeds. A good yield with animals and crops provides profit for the farmer and food for us. In the same way, if we are to yield a ‘good crop’, we must spend time with our Creator so we know what he wants us to do and how to do it. God always gives us the skills needed for a task and he is always with us, by our side or carrying us. We are not alone. A ‘good crop’ is what Jesus meant when he gave the Great Commission to his disciples. “Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.” Furthermore, developing our faith will lead us to become a better person: one who puts others first, is not quick to anger or pass judgement, lives life according to the teachings of Jesus. In a mother’s womb were two babies. One asked the other: “Do you believe in life after delivery?” The other replied, “Why, of course. There has to be something after delivery. Maybe we are here to prepare ourselves for what we will be later.” “Nonsense” said the first. “There is no life after delivery. What kind of life would that be?” The second said, “I don’t know, but there will be more light than here. Maybe we will walk with our legs and eat from our mouths. Maybe we will have other senses that we can’t understand now.” The first replied, “That is absurd. Walking is impossible. And eating with our mouths? Ridiculous! The umbilical cord supplies nutrition and everything we need. But the umbilical cord is so short. Life after delivery is to be logically excluded.” The second insisted, “Well I think there is something and maybe it’s different than it is here. Maybe we won’t need this physical cord anymore.” The first replied, “Nonsense. And moreover if there is life, then why has no one has ever come back from there? Delivery is the end of life, and in the after-delivery there is nothing but darkness and silence and oblivion. It takes us nowhere.” “Well, I don’t know,” said the second, “but certainly we will meet Mother and she will take care of us.” The first replied “Mother? You actually believe in Mother? That’s laughable. If Mother exists then where is She now?” The second said, “She is all around us. We are surrounded by her. We are of Her. It is in Her that we live. Without Her this world would not and could not exist.” Said the first: “Well I don’t see Her, so it is only logical that She doesn’t exist.” To which the second replied, “Sometimes, when you’re in silence and you focus and you really listen, you can perceive Her presence, and you can hear Her loving voice, calling down from above.” May 2015 WI Meeting Jenny welcomed 35 members and the folksy version of Jerusalem was sung. Gwynneth informed members of forthcoming events: A Puffin Cruise; Trip to Thirsk and visit to the mouseman, with Nafferton WI; Afternoon tea at Leven celebrating 100 years of WI; and Centennial fair at Harrogate on 5th Sept. The speaker for the evening was Adam Palmer, a director of Yorkshire Rape Seed Oil, who gave us a very interesting talk. We were all delighted to sample the different oils and dressings produced by the company. The competition, a photo of a rape field, was very popular and was won by Rhiannon Brown. Being responsible for the distribution of the Bulletin, our much valued village newsletter (newsletter? – twenty-eight pages?) I hope all of our deliverers understand the value of their hard work. Let’s face it, without them all the hours that go into the production, the newsworthiness of the contributions and the interest and returns that our advertisers benefit from, would all count for nothing. Not for us the crafty dumping of quantities of copies or going out when you feel like it. Our deliverers are community minded and committed (in fact I often think they should be, turning out in all weathers!) to making sure that our ever expanding locality is kept up to speed with everything connected with Hutton Cranswick. But this time I want to focus on one lady who has only recently given up her round of eighty-one houses. Even then she didn’t let us down, but passed the task on to her sister, Valerie, and brother-in-law. Barbara Ness was born in the village and, apart from the years spent farming at Tophill Low with husband of sixtyfour years, Gordon, she has never lived anywhere else. She can’t remember the precise number of years she has been involved with helping the Bulletin, but I would guess it was shortly after its conception forty years ago (which as many of you know has recently been celebrated with an exhibition and lovely get together at the WI Hall) and I have been informed by Sheila, a resident of long standing, that Barbara never missed a delivery. Barbara and Valerie, who were two of a family of twelve now live in close proximity on Londesborough Road on land that was once their garden, their father being the village blacksmith. I think that’s rather special and epitomises the closeness of the older residents of our community, illustrating once again that however often people may move on for one reason or another, frequently they return to our lovely village. So a big thank you, Barbara, for all that effort – I can’t even begin to calculate how many editions you must have posted – from the entire Bulletin team, and we wish you and Gordon, not to mention rescue Jack Russell, Oscar, and your ancient cockatiel, many more happy readings of the Bulletin being delivered to you for a change. P.S. If I’m a bit short Barbara, do you fancy doing any holiday cover???!!! To everyone for their support at the coffee morning in aid of the SRA. In particular thanks to Manor Farm Shop for donation of cream, to Hutton Cranswick Garden Centre for donation of milk and to Spar Shop for donation of jam and butter and to all our lovely helpers. Many thanks Sally and Tara x OLD VILLAGE PHOTOS? As part of a display at the Village Show on 27th June, we would be very grateful for the loan of any old photographs you may have of the village and villagers, particularly if they are associated with the old village shows, gala days, feasts or fetes. Please contact Yvonne Mills if you can help Tel: 01377 202140; Email: [email protected] A request from a resident … Car parking outside the WI Hall is becoming a problem with people parking on both sides of the road. Large vehicles such as lorries, tractors and the emergency service vehicles are, frequently, not able to pass down Main Street without causing damage to cars. It would be appreciated if people using the WI Hall could consider parking on one side of the road, thus leaving a safe gap for traffic to pass though. The WI Hall is there for everybody in the community to use but please can some consideration be shown for the people that live on Main Street, and their cars, as we all know how expensive they are to repair. Please Park Res Many thanks. 11 po n sib ly! Could this be termed a ‘Fun Weekend’? · · · · · · · Our research into the 40 years of Bulletin production tells us that a Fun Weekend was held from 16–19 July in 1981. With three active pubs in the village at that time, they certainly did seem to have ‘fun’. Not only was a Miss Hutton Cranswick chosen from the young ladies, there was, also, a Miss Hutton Cranswick (in Drag)! New roofs and roof repairs Extensions New kitchens supplied and fitted New bathrooms supplied and fitted Plastering and dry lining Conversions and renovations All aspects of building work The Cross Keys held a Domino Match and supper for their customers. The Pack Horse held a Fancy Dress party: ‘The event turned out to be much larger than anticipated and a pleasant evening of fun and laughter was enjoyed by all who attended.’ The White Horse organised a Pool & Darts Competition and provided supper. Trophies were presented for each event. Various displays and stalls were held and the respective organisations wish to thank customers who patronised them and also to the people who very kindly donated bottles for the bottle stall. A special word of thanks must be passed to the Cubs who did a marvellous job of clearing rubbish from the Green.’ Let’s hope we can write as positively about current village events. We will take this opportunity to say a big ‘Thank you’ to all the people who spend so much time and energy organising activities for us to enjoy and so encourage the great sense of community that is a valued aspect of life in Hutton Cranswick. The children have been busy tidying the school grounds and preparing the raised beds and vegetable patch ready for planting. The school has received four large wooden planters organised through Cranswick Garden Centre, along with lots of plants, including pansies and geraniums, these have now been planted up and have brightened the outdoor area significantly. On Friday 15th May, the children were asked to bring in a cutting or plant, we were overwhelmed by the response and we received over 100 plants, including clematis, lavender, rosemary and many colourful bedding plants. In the afternoon each child chose the spot where they wanted their plant to be planted and they wrote their names on a plant label to show where their plant is planted. The grounds of the the school are now looking abundant with plants and the pupils, parents and staff are looking forward to them all coming to fruition in the coming weeks and months. 17 Unit 23 Cranswick Industrial Estate, Cranswick YO25 9PF Get Gorgeous ! The tour will begin from the Sports and Recreation Association centre in Rotsea Lane at 1.30pm. On this occasion, the judges, Sheila Johnson and Jane Macaulay, will visit the special category entries: Hutton Cranswick Playgroup; James White (Butchers); Paul Harrison Cars (Autopoint); and Southlands Residential Care Home. Village in Bloom appreciates the support from these village organisations. The village competitions for summer will be organised by Margaret Jenkins. The focus for the garden competition will be container planting: The prettiest summer hanging basket, wall basket or container. An independent judge will tour the village looking for pretty container creations during the week beginning 15 June. If you would like the judge to see a planter display that is not easily visible from the road, please contact Margaret on: 01377 271191. The theme for the photographic competition will be: The most beautiful flower in my garden. Be ready to snap individual flowers as they burst into bloom. Photographs should be mounted, if possible, and no larger than 8 x 6. Please ensure that Margaret receives your entry at 2 Pinfold Close, Hutton, YO25 9YU, no later than 22 June. Thinking of flowers in bloom – we are delighted to learn that Hutton Cranswick School Garden Club has become active again. There are some attractive planters around the school and the grounds are already looking tidier and more colourful. If their plants flower in time, perhaps, we’ll have a selection of photographs from the children! Comments from spring Centenary Wood At the time of going to print, the official spring report has not been available on the Yorkshire in Bloom website. However, we have received some very positive comments directly from the judges. If you haven’t visited Centenary Wood this spring, then you’ve missed a treat. From the first snowdrops appearing, there has been a succession of colour carpeting the woodland: aconites, celandines and now, of course, the bluebells and forget-me-knots. In their introduction they say ‘Hutton Cranswick is a joy to visit.’ They compliment the village on the excellent standard of residential gardens. They commended the group on the imaginative use of recycled materials to create Crawford the Crane and the replica train at the station. ‘Centenary Wood looked magnificent in the afternoon sunshine … Avice and Sonia are to be congratulated on their achievements … they are passionate about their piece of paradise.’ ‘Throughout the village the plant barrels and containers are well maintained and beautifully planted … we were particularly taken with the dog cart on the main road which was nicely planted with beautifully blended colours.’ Yorkshire Wildlife Trust are encouraging everyone to ‘Go Wild’ in June so why not take time out to enjoy our local wood. Listen for the blackbirds, the robins and the chiffchaffs. A resident spoke as regards the proposed Local Plan and the Inspector’s Report which is due in June. There are many things missing from the Local Plan, although some these things are small items the changes are absolutely huge for Hutton Cranswick and the ER. The main change is that the that council has said is that they consider that Hull and the ER to be one housing area which has immense implications Villages will need 625 further houses, but not stated where they are. Most of those will be in the most sustainable villages, most of where they have been indicated have been extensions of existing sites. They are not intending to review any sites which are already allocated. The allocations which in place at the moment are not for the Local Plan period they are for the next five years. Looking a the monitoring reviews The ER expect everyone of the 149 houses currently allocated for Hutton Cranswick to be built within the next five years and a similar number will have to be allocated again to cover the rest of the plan period. 7 Planning Matters: To submit Notice of Decision made by the ERYC and consider a response to any correspondence received: A B To submit a letter from Arqiva’s Smart Meter Network – Proposed development at Hutton Cranswick Industrial Estate Noted ERLP Modifications Consultation - open Monday 30 March 2015 – closes 5.00pm Monday 11 May 2015 Signed..............................................................................................................................Date............................ 24 Page | 193 Modification consultation letter/Strategy Document Schedule of Modifications/Revised Policies Map, inset for Hutton Cranswick/Representation Form and Guidance Notes (emailed to cllr 08/04/2015) and email from resident as regards the ERLP: The council considered 8 Planning Applications: To agree a response to the following planning applications & tree applications received, planning applications are available for viewing prior to the meeting: A B C D E 15/00544/PLF - Erection of single storey extensions to front and side with relocation of access at The Laurels Burn Butts Lane, Cranswick for Mr Keith Smith – Full Planning Permission - No objections 15/00712/VAR - Removal of condition 6 from planning permission 14/01652/OUT Outline - Erection of a pair of semi-detached dwellings and one detached dwelling (Access, Appearance, Layout and Scale to be considered) without provision for affordable housing Land West Of 13 The Green, Cranswick for Mr Alan Nicholson – Variation of Conditions No objections 15/0833/PLF – Erection of 2 storey extension to side, single storey extension to rear and construction of boundary all with 1.75m high brick pillars and timber infill fence panels at 1 Willow Court, Cranswick for Mr C Elliott – Full Planning Permission: No objections 15/01063/TCA - HUTTON CONSERVATION AREA - Fell Pear tree due to close proximity to property. The letter goes on to say that the vast majority of hedges which adjoin the highway are the responsibility of the landowner who should undertake routine maintenance. If this fails then a report via the online form to be used. c) General maintenance, such as the narrowing of roads and verge erosion or lack of suitable verge or footpath should be reported to Highways in the first instance using the online reporting form d) Whenever an encroachment is suspected on the public highway, the relevant Highway Authority has a duty to carry out a status check to determine the exact limits of the highway thereby establishing whether an encroachment has occurred. Again any concerns should in the first instance be directed to the Highways department.
