Gammelgården’s Annual Fiddle Festival is one
of our most popular events.
This event
literally means a “fiddle gathering”. Join our
parade of musicians as they lead to way to an
afternoon of exciting music. The program
Stephan Edlund
features the ASI Spelmans Lag, the Nykelharp
Leif & Linda Erickson Lag of the Twin Cities and the Hillebola
Donna Johnson
Hotdish. A true fiddle festival means group
Laura Norlander
participation so bring your own instrument
Mary & Lance Rossell and you will be welcome to add your own

Tacos, Star Trek and Swedish Meatballs???
3rd Annual Running of the Meatballs &
2nd Annual Star Watch with WCCO ‘s Mike Lynch
Saturday September 7 During Scandia TACO Daze!
How exactly do you combine taco’s, Star Trek and Swedish
meatballs??? Can’t wait to see the Parade Float! Star Trek is
the theme of Scandia’s annual festival TACO DAZE during
which Gammelgården Museum has their “Running of the
Meatballs” event before the Scandia Star Trek-themed parade
which is followed this year by Mike Lynch’s Star Gazing Party
at the museum. Now that’s a day that is out of this world!
Drive or bike your way into Scandia for this fun-filled
community event. Gammelgården Museum will be open with
guides available for tours. The Scandia Butik will be sure to
have a selection of new fall merchandise for you to peruse.
Don’t forget the Barn Anew! Artist Exhibit upstairs in the
Passage Room. This exhibit is open to the public and will be
on display only through September so this is a great
opportunity to view St Croix Valley’s local artistic talent. The
Museum will be selling Meatball Sandwiches at Elim Church on the patio. Look for our roving Meatball
Ticket sellers—you can’t miss them in their blue aprons and bouncing meatball head-gear! …..What?? You
don’t know about the Running of the Meatballs??? Anyone 18 years or older can purchase a ticket with a
number which coincides to a numbered “meatball”. (Really, brown painted golf balls.) Tickets are $5.00
apiece or $20.00 for 5 and can be purchased in the gift shop or up at the top of the hill where the Running of
the Meatballs will take place or from a roaming Meatball Ticket Seller. At
approximately 2:30pm, Oak Hill Road will be closed and the Meatball Course
will be set up. Crowds begin to gather in anticipation …. Especially when the
giant hopper full of “meatballs” is rolled into place. The official judges are at
the bottom of the hill and precisely at 2:45, the balls are released and roll
wildly down the hill into the shute. The first 10 balls down the hill line up
neatly into a slot and the winners are determined. First place meatball wins
$500! Prizes for the first 10 winning meatballs listed on website:
www.gammelgardenmuseum.org.
Be sure to stay to Gaze at the Stars with WCCO’s Meteorologist and
Astronomer, Mike Lynch after 8:00 pm. This is Mike’s second star gazing visit
to Gammelgården Museum. He will be setting up his telescopes between 7:00
and 8:00 on the grounds of the museum—an interesting sight in itself! His
Star Gazing Party begins about 8:30 so once you are full of Tacos and Swedish
Meatball sandwiches, cozy up in your lawn chair or on a blanket under the
beautiful summer sky as Mike takes you to the far reaches of space!
BARN ANEW! Bloo Moo Hoop-Dee-Doo Recap
The purpose of this event was to have a great time while raising funds to continue the renovations of the
Ladugård and up-grade the displays. The goal was most certainly met as you can see from some of the
pictures on the previous page or on our FACEBOOK page. Over $6500 was raised through a combination of
dinner tickets, Silent Auction, Dessert Basket Auction plus Matching Grant and Gifts from Supporters. The
Barn Anew! Committee will be shopping for life-size models of cows, horses and maybe a goat or lamb.
Animal sounds are already in the lower level of the barn! Have you been there lately? Our Ladugård now
sounds …. And still SMELLS ... like a working barn. Other improvements and repairs are now possible thanks
to this wonderful FUNd-Raiser. Special thank-you’s go out to Duck for the Oyster who led the square
dancing, LeeAnn VandeKamp, our Dessert Basket Auctioneer, Alan Bakke our superb MC, Ross and Marta
Nelson for their musical donation and Holly at Scandia Café and crew for the fabulous dinner!

BACK TO SCHOOL at Gammelgården Museum!
Swedish Language Classes Resume Mondays September 16 through November 11
New Ljuskroner Class and Exhibit November 30, December 1
Traditional Swedish Sausage Class November 2,3
Gammelgården Museum is proud to bring you a
new exhibit and coinciding class on the Swedish
Holiday Ljuskroner. The origin of Ljuskroner is
unknown but is thought to have preceded the
Christmas Tree. They were widely used as Christmas Decor by Swedish Immigrants in Kansas
where, of course, pine trees were non-existent.
The Ljuskroner, because of its use of candles, is
linked to the Swedish Lucia tradition. Many families in Sweden bring out their Ljuskroner on December 13 to begin the Christmas Season. The candle holders are rewrapped in tissue paper and placed in the center of the dinner table where they remain until January 12, King Knut's Day.
Swedish Language Classes for Intermediate (5:30) Progressing (6:30) & Beginning (7:30) begin Monday
evening Sept 16. Cost is $80.00 for the Fall Session.
Swedish Sausage (Korv) Making Classes Saturday, Nov 2 (10:00—12:00) or Sunday, Nov 3 (1:00—3:00).
Learn to make traditional Swedish Sausage and bring your Korv home with you! Cost is $25.00 and
includes lunch.
NEW Ljuskroner Class Nov 30 and Dec 1 at 1:00pm. Learn about the tradition and make your own
Ljuskroner to begin YOUR family’s Ljuskroner Tradition. The Ljuskrona kit cost will be $35.00 and
include refreshments. Limit to each class is 12 ljuskroner kits, however, this will be a fantastic family
participation class—one family can work together to make their own Ljuskroner. Cost of kit is $35.00,
each additional adult is $10.00, each additional child under 12 is $5.00.
The Incredible Scandia Butik
Autumn arrives in a burst of color at the Butik with a beautiful array of new table linens, vibrant
embellished scarves and accessories. Along with your favorite traditional Swedish treasures, explore
merchandise created by St Croix Valley residents! Included are books by authors with local ties including
Peter Vodenko, Pat Bettendorf, Christa Kinde, Lois Walfrid Johnson, Carol Seefeldt; doll clothes made by Barbara Ostlund and handmade exciting new items on order to make your holidays special and bright. And
amusing Lutfisk merchandise? I am personally excited for a couple of items that will give my father-in-law
the giggles on Lutfisk day! No pictures to show you yet but let me assure you that a stop in the Butik is
lways worth your time.
Harriet Johnson, manager of the Butik says “We are always pleased that visitors come from far away almost every day we have travelers from Sweden! We welcomed folks from Australia and, as we are always
happy to, we shipped their purchases to them. Frequently we welcome locals who are making their initial
visit after having driven by the museum time and again and finally make the stop. And always we treasure
faithful repeat customers!”

Eleanor Edman, Gammelgården
Museum Advokat, recently gifted
Gammelgården Museum with this
ceramic pot, originally made in
Sweden over 220 years ago and now
h o n o r a b ly d i s p la ye d i n t h e
Välkommen Hus. How did such an
unassuming, utilitarian and simple
everyday item survive to 2013? Why would it have been transported by hand across the sea as part of one
of her ancestors few possessions to come to America? How was it even carried onto the ship as it does not
have handles? What did it contain on the journey? What is the significance of the flower stamp on the side
of the pot? The fascinating thing about artifacts is the questions they inspire. This pot especially; because it
was most likely not a treasured heirloom piece of china but just a pot to house pickles or herring or root
vegetables; gives us great pause to really delve into the lives of its owners. Let’s work our way backward
through the life of this ceramic pot. It ended up in the possession of Eleanor’s cousins and was gifted to her
father, Eric, because “Your family treasures old items.” Without a family member who is known to treasure
artifacts, many of these items are simply destroyed as useless. This lucky pot spent many years safely
tucked under a chair at Eleanor’s home to keep it from being damaged before she so graciously donated it to
our museum. Eleanor’s ancestors come from Ostergotland, south of Stockholm near Finspang where there
was an iron factory. Eleanor knows through her family’s stories, that the “Edman Brothers” of Sweden were
known to be strong and sturdy folks. That is a great clue as to why it was no problem to simply load up
that heavy pot with provisions, pick it up and carry it on board the ship. It is her supposition that the pot
contained possibly food for the journey and was used as food storage for acidic foods such as pickled
preserved herring. The flower stamp is very interesting and looks to be an early logo from the Gustavberg
Pottery Company. Porcelain factories such as Gustavberg, once thrived in Sweden. The remaining buildings
are now museums. It is amazing to think of the number of hands touching this ceramic pot … its original
potter from 1789, its original owner, the family members who filled it with herring, potatoes, lingonberries,
pickles, the immigrant who carried it on the ship, Eleanor herself and finally Gammelgården Museum!
