Antakya Trip
7 a.m., meeting and departure. Arrival at Iskenderun and tea time by the sea. After that, we’ll
set off to Antakya, one of the three biggest cities of Roman Empire, eastern capital of the
empire and the second Christian city of the history after Jerusalem. Antakya, which is located on
the valley between Amanus Mountains and Mount Habib Neccar, right next to Amik Valley,
has an enormously rich history when compared to its position today. Antakya was built in 4 BC
by Syrian King Seleukos I. and culturally affected by Romans, Arabs, Byzantines,
Seljukians and Ottomans. The historical heritage of the city is greatly preserved. Home to
many people from different religions, the city has successfully kept its unique structure due to
small rate of immigration. Our trip will start at Antakya Archaeology Museum, where we’ll see
unique mosaics attesting to the prosperous and glorious times in the history of Antakya. We’ll
have lunch at Harbiye. Known as Daphne in the ancient times, Harbiye lies 10km south of
Antakya and it is famous for its great falls. Under Roman Empire, wealthy residents of Antalya
built villas in famous summer resort Daphne, which was known for its waterfalls and pools. The
mosaics from the foundations of the villas were mostly smuggled to overseas but the remaining
artifacts are exhibited at Antakya Archaeology Museum. Later, we’ll visit St. Pierre Church
built in a cave at the foothills of Mount Habib Neccar. This cave is known to be one of the
meeting places of the first Christians. St. Pierre, one of Jesus Christ’s apostles, visited
Antakya in 29-30 AD and used this cave while preaching to convert people to Christianity. This is
the first place where the term “Christians” was used for the people who believed in Jesus
Christ’s religion. We’ll get ready for return trip around 6 p.m. and arrive at Adana around 8 p.m.
