HISTORY OF THE
PGA OF AMERICA
The PGA of America is the world’s largest sports
organization. The PGA and its 28,000 men and women
Professionals teach and grow the game every day, making
golf more appealing to the millions who play it while
working to attract many more who have expressed interest
in trying the game or returning to it.
As we count down to our Centennial in 2016, the PGA
continues to lead the multi-billion dollar golf industry. The
PGA also conducts some of golf ’s premier championships,
including the PGA Championship, Ryder Cup, Senior
PGA Championship presented by KitchenAid, and
the PGA Grand Slam of Golf. In addition, the PGA is
partnering with the LPGA and KPMG, a leading audit, tax
and advisory firm, to conduct the KPMG Women’s PGA
Championship, beginning in 2015.
The PGA’s origin can be traced to January 17, 1916, when
a group of New York-area golf professionals, accompanied
by several prominent amateur golfers, attended a luncheon
at the Taplow Club in the former Wanamaker Store in
New York City.
The host was department store magnate Rodman
Wanamaker. Among those in attendance were prominent
golfers Walter Hagen and Francis Ouimet, and acclaimed
golf course designer A.W. Tillinghast. The purpose of
the gathering was to discuss forming a national golf
organization, which would promote interest in the game
and help elevate the vocation of the golf professional.
featured the most top-100 rated players from the Official
World Golf Rankings.
Walter Hagen and Jack Nicklaus share the record for most
PGA Championship titles, with five each. Tiger Woods has
won the PGA Championship four times.
In 2014, at Valhalla Golf Club in Louisville, Ky., Rory
McIlroy capped a remarkable month of excellence
by rallying to win his second PGA Championship,
making him the fifth player in history to earn four major
championships by age 25.
The Ryder Cup, which first matched American PGA
Professionals and their counterparts from Great Britain,
began in 1927 with a 9 1/2 to 2 1/2 United States victory
at Worcester (Mass.) Country Club. Since then, the Ryder
Cup has developed into one of the pre-eminent events in
all of sports.
In 1979, the Ryder Cup underwent what is arguably its
boldest renovation, with players from continental Europe
added, in order to increase the level of competition. The
U.S. was in the midst of an 18-year streak of retaining the
Ryder Cup that began in 1957, and would eventually come
to an end in 1985.
Wanamaker, who viewed the public’s growing enthusiasm
for golf as the beginning of a national trend, promoted the
idea of an association to help accelerate the growth of the
game.
On April 10, 1916, the PGA of America was formed in
New York City, with 78 founding members. The PGA
established two primary objectives, which today still drive
its efforts: Serve our members and grow the game.
The first PGA Championship was held October 9-14,
1916, at Siwanoy Country Club in Bronxville, N.Y. Jim
Barnes defeated Jock Hutchison, 1-up, in the finals.
Wanamaker donated a purse of $2,580 and the trophy that
still bears his name. Today, the Wanamaker Trophy remains
one of the most coveted pieces of hardware in sports.
The PGA Championship is one of golf ’s four major
championships and has produced a highlight reel of golf ’s
special moments. Since 1994, the PGA Championship has
In near darkness at Valhalla Golf Club, Rory McIlroy shined the
brightest by winning the 2014 PGA Championship and raising
the Wanamaker Trophy for the second time in three years.

In 2014, Europe dominated at Gleneagles’ PGA
Centenary Course in Perthshire, Scotland, to win the
Ryder Cup for the sixth time in the seven matches
played in this century.
The Senior PGA Championship began in 1937 at
Augusta (Ga.) National Golf Club at the invitation of
course founder Bobby Jones. Today, the Championship,
presented by KitchenAid, is the most historic
and prestigious event in senior golf. Champions
include Gene Sarazen, Arnold Palmer, Jack Nicklaus,
Gary Player, Lee Trevino, Hale Irwin, and Colin
Montgomerie, the 2014 Senior PGA Champion.
In an effort to acquire world-class sites to host its
premier events, the PGA acquired Valhalla Golf Club in
Louisville, Ky. The complete agreement was solidified
following the 2000 PGA Championship. Valhalla has
conducted three PGA Championships, the 2008 Ryder
Cup, two Senior PGA Championships, and the 2002
PGA Professional National Championship.
HISTORY OF THE PGA OF AMERICA
In 1996, the PGA opened two 18-hole golf courses at PGA
Golf Club in Port St. Lucie, Fla. A third course was opened
for play in December 1999.
The PGA of America conducts more than 20 tournaments
for its members and apprentices, including the PGA
Professional National Championship, the showcase event
for PGA Club Professionals. The top 20 finishers at the
PGA Professional National Championship advance to
compete in the PGA Championship.
Through its national headquarters in Palm Beach Gardens,
Fla., and a network of 41 Section Offices, the Association
maintains a total commitment to its Professionals, helping
the membership meet the demands of today’s marketplace
and addressing issues that are vital to the golf industry.
PGA President Derek Sprague, Vice President Paul Levy
and Secretary Suzy Whaley (the first woman to be elected
as a National Officer) work with PGA CEO Pete Bevacqua
to serve PGA members and grow the game of golf.
PGA Professionals lead the efforts to grow the game of golf, whether through personal instruction or in successful initiatives such
as PGA Junior League Golf and the Drive, Chip & Putt Championship.

PGA OF AMERICA AWARDS
VARDON TROPHY
RORY MCILROY
Jupiter, Fla.
The Vardon Trophy, named by the PGA of America in honor of legendary British golfer Harry Vardon,
was preceded by the Harry Radix Trophy, which was initiated in 1934. The Radix Trophy was presented to Ky Laffoon (1934), Paul Runyan (1935) and Ralph Guldahl (1936). Radix was an Illinois
businessman who was a member of the PGA Advisory Committee. The PGA changed the name of the
award to the Vardon Trophy in 1937 to commemorate Harry Vardon, who died the same year. The
Vardon Trophy is a bronze-colored plaque measuring 39” by 27” and features sculpted hands replicating Vardon’s famed overlapping grip on a golf club. From 1947 to 1987, the Vardon Trophy was
awarded to the professional golfer with the lowest scoring average. In 1988, the criteria was adjusted
to award the Vardon Trophy to the touring professional with the lowest adjusted scoring average. It is
based on a minimum of 60 rounds, with no incomplete rounds (i.e. stipulated rounds as defined by the
Rules of Golf, as approved by the USGA and the Royal & Ancient Golf Club of St. Andrews, Scotland),
in events co-sponsored or designated by the PGA Tour. The adjusted score is computed from the average score of the field at each tournament. As a result, a player’s adjusted score may be higher or lower
than his actual score. For example, a player shoots 70 each day at a tournament while the field average
was 73. His 280 total would then be adjusted to 268 since he actually played 12 shots better than the
field did during the tournament. Any player with an incomplete round will be ineligible to win the
Vardon Trophy.

PGA MERCHANDISE SHOW
63RD PGA MERCHANDISE SHOW
JANUARY 20, 2015 (Outdoor Demo Day)
JANUARY 21 – 23, 2015 (Exhibits, Education & Special Events)
Orange County Convention Center | Orlando, Fla.
The PGA Merchandise Show, the world’s largest and most
influential golf business event, grew from humble beginnings
in Dunedin, Florida, in 1954, when a handful of golf
merchandisers assembled in the PGA National Golf Club
parking lot during a series of PGA winter tournaments. In
1963, when the exposition grew, it relocated to the east coast
of Florida. Since 1985, the Show’s permanent home has
become the Orange County Convention Center (OCCC) in
Orlando.
The PGA of America sold an equity share to Reed Exhibitions
in 1998. Through the partnership, the PGA Merchandise
Show has evolved to become an all-encompassing global
platform for the introduction of new products, indoor and
outdoor product testing, wide-ranging education seminars,
industry symposiums, fashion features, player development
programs, professional networking events and more.
In 2014, Golf Channel bolstered its coverage of the Show
with its daily Morning Drive, broadcasting live each day
from the PGA Show floor.
The PGA Merchandise Show annually welcomes some 1,000
top golf companies and brands and more than 40,000 industry
professionals from around the world to the industry’s annual
global summit for the business of golf.

AUGUST 17– 19, 2015
The Venetian | Las Vegas, Nev.

Experience, (formerly the PGA Expo), has served as an
important marketplace for the global golf industry to gather
in the second half of the season on the West Coast.

all-new sophisticated look to showcase the hottest fashion
trends and newest accessory collections from approximately
200 companies.

as a fashion merchandising, product testing and education
event, exclusively for industry professionals and golf lifestyle
apparel retailers.
The PGA Education Conference featured a keynote address
by the National Retail Federation, certification programs,
instruction clinics, seminars and a youth and family player
development workshop.

equipment, technology, training aids and accessories from more
than 60 leading golf brands and emerging companies during the

GOLF CLUB
PGA Golf Club in Port St. Lucie, Fla.
PGA Golf Properties Inc., a wholly owned subsidiary of
the PGA of America, advances the PGA’s objectives to
promote enjoyment and involvement in the game, by providing
accessible world-class Championship golf courses, learning
centers, research, education, licensing and advisory services.
Since the forming of PGA Golf Properties, the PGA has
acquired, developed and licensed world-renowned golf
properties, including PGA Village in Port St. Lucie, Fla. —
home to PGA Golf Club, PGA Center for Golf Learning and
Performance, PGA Museum of Golf, PGA Education Center
and the private PGA Country Club. PGA Golf Properties
also owns and operates Valhalla Golf Club in Louisville, Ky.,
which will host the 96th PGA Championship in 2014.
These properties benefit PGA members, allow the Association
to host many of its own Championships, and serve as model
facilities within the industry.
The world’s first Audubon Sustainable Golf Facility, PGA
Village serves as the winter home to PGA Professionals, with
72 holes of Championship golf by architects Pete Dye, Tom
Fazio and Jim Fazio. There is also a six-hole Short Course
designed for families and beginners. The facility renovated
its Tom Fazio courses in 2006, renaming the North and South
Courses as the Ryder and Wanamaker Courses, respectively.
The Dye Course completed a restoration project by its
namesake in 2007. The PGA Country Club course received
beautification upgrades in 2013. The PGA Center for Golf
Learning and Performance is a 35-acre golf park that offers
practice areas for every conceivable golf shot. The prototype
facility is ranked among the “Top 50 Golf Ranges” by Golf
Range Magazine, as it features more than 100 practice stations,
putting greens and chipping areas. Visitors, including national
and junior national golf teams from Germany and Denmark,
travel to the Center to enhance their game. Home to PGA of
America Golf Schools, the facility also features world-class
technology, golf fitness and a PGA Club Performance facility
for expert club fitting and repair.
Ranked as one of “America’s 100 Greatest Golf Courses”
by Golf Digest, Valhalla Golf Club has hosted historic golf
events, including the 1996 and 2000 PGA Championship; 2008
Ryder Cup and 2011 Senior PGA Championship presented by
KitchenAid. One of only five venues to host each of these
marquee events, Valhalla was also the setting for the 2002
PGA Professional National Championship. In 2011, the PGA
partnered with architect Jack Nicklaus on a golf course
modernization program that enhanced the golf experience for
Valhalla members and will challenge the world’s finest players
during the 96th PGA Championship
