It’s also a way for members to focus on the selfreflective aspects of the practice rather than “the perfect pose”. At IMF, our certified yoga staff provides an inviting atmosphere that offers novice and seasoned members a place to build self-confidence, thereby reinforcing and acknowledging the potential for self-transformation. Moreover, members are encouraged to view the body as a vehicle for self transformation that can help students experience or feel what they may be avoiding. In asanas (yoga postures), we can freely stay (or flow) in the non-painful discomfort, breathe and transform. We relate the discomfort in asanas to the discomfort in life, so as to encourage students to stay with difficult feelings as a way to explore breakthroughs, cultivate balance and strength and apply this experience to the healing process. Pranayama and meditation are also important tools in alternative settings; explore using them to go more deeply and safely into hidden feelings and stop the cycles of obsessive thinking. group x During the holidays when time is limited, more than ever members should resist the urge to skip their workout and instead commit to setting aside productive group exercise class time that will allow the opportunity to train with focused efficiency. Even during the holiday season, IMF members have a HUGE selection of GX, Cycling, Yoga and Aqua classes taught by experienced and certified staff, whose main purpose and focus is to assist members in achieving their health and wellness goals throughout the year. By simply adding two more glasses of water a day, a couple more classes, and yes 2 more hours of rest a week, you’re off to a good start in establishing healthy habits by the end of the year. New Year’s Day, you can get your workout in and still celebrate and have your piece of cake too. senior spotlight John Burke, age 72 Hobbies: Art My goal: Getting my physical and mental health back My exercise program has helped me: Walk better and feel better I love this club because: The staff and environment is great! I have been in a lot of clubs from Santa Barbara to Redding and THIS club is the best! John’s Story: Three years ago I had reconstructive back surgery and I lost all mobility and strength in my left leg. I was confined to a wheelchair for awhile. I had an extensive rehabilitation process and have come SO far. When I started at In Motion, I joined the Water Wellness class first and did the pool only for awhile. Then I added the fitness floor component and was able to really increase my endurance and strength. My goal then became to improve balance so that I could walk better so I also joined the beginning Wellness Challenge class and I love it! I now come 5 days a week and think that the combination of Senior Wellness and Wellness Challenge has been the most successful therapy for regaining my mobility, strength, and quality of life! We had a call after the Thanksgiving break: One of our clients 1 1/2yrs old fell into her family’s pool. She did the right thing and turned around and grabbed the wall! She was safe before Dad jumped in to save her! It is always a good feeling to know you help save a life. Swim lessons do save lives and are not just for kids! Kids in motion Happy Holidays from everyone here at Kids In Motion! Tis the season of giving, loving, and (inevitably) shopping! Here at Kids In Motion we will be holding our annual Drop & Shop. Pricing is $18 for the first child and $15 for each subsequent child. To sign up for the Drop & Shop feel free to contact us at Kids In Motion! Happy Holidays! cycling Sprinting is a common movement done in indoor cycling classes. Last month, short sprints were discussed & this month long sprints. A long sprint is defined as an all-out effort of 30 seconds with 4 minutes of recovery to follow. Remember that heavy resistance + acceleration is what makes a sprint, not just speeding up. You should feel exhausted after a long sprint & you will want a long recovery afterwards in preparation for the next one. Long sprints have several benefits. First they make you stronger by working fast twitch muscle fiber if you loaded the flywheel appropriately. Secondly, they increase your lung capacity, known as Max V02 which improves your cardiovascular fitness level. Thirdly, you tap into all 3 of your fuel sources for exercise: Creatine Phosphate gets used up first, then Lactic Acid and at the very end Fatty Acids. Fat is also utilized in the after-burn for recovery. The key however is building up your ability to do long sprints & that takes time. Gradually increase your sprint time until you can perform all-out for 30 seconds. Sprints only need be done 1-2x/week. THANKS leasa The many women and men who attend the Mon., Wed., and Fri. Forever Fit classes feel extremely fortunate to have Leasa Torgerson as their instructor. All too often, good deserving people go unnoticed for their genuine efforts. Therefore, in appreciation of Leasa’s efforts in teaching her wonderful classes, the entire group (spearheaded by class member, Brenda Andersen) presented Leasa with a $250 gift card to buy some items she may want or need for her newly purchased (first) new home.
