Untitled - Innovative Sweden Jakarta 2014
I am very proud to welcome you to the 2015 Indonesia-Sweden Infrastructure Forum. The aim
of this knowledge exchange seminar is to tackle two global and universal challenges related
to urban infrastructure: traffic safety and sustainable and smart urban development.
Together with Business Sweden, we have invited two of our country’s most knowledgeable
experts within these two areas to share some of the Swedish experiences.
Andreas Gyllenhammar is the Chief Sustainability Officer at Sweco, who holds a PhD in
Environmental Analysis. He has a vision, “In the smart city everything communicates, not just
people”. He is also part of the Global Working Group on Smart City standards and in this forum
Andreas will share ideas on how information and communication technologies can contribute
to greener and more energy efficient cities.
Matts-Åke Belin is the Traffic Safety Strategist at the Swedish Transport Administration.
He will tell us more about Vision Zero, the Swedish approach to road safety. It can be
summarised in one sentence: no loss of life is acceptable and transportation policy needs
to be based on the simple fact that we are human and make mistakes. This initiative,
questioned while launched in Sweden almost 20 years ago, is now influencing the traffic
safety policies in numerous countries around the world.
In addition, our Swedish partner companies will present their innovations and solutions for
safer roads as well as smarter and greener cities.
Together with our key Indonesian counterparts and speakers from the Ministry of Transport,
the Ministry of Public Works, Jakarta City Government as well as CSID UI and ITB Smart
City, we hope this forum will lead to further collaboration between Indonesian and Swedish
stakeholders.
We will need to work together to meet the growing needs for safer, more connected and
greener infrastructure solutions. I look forward to fruitful discussions and even stronger
relations between our two countries in meeting the challenges of making our cities a
better place to live.

“How smart can contribute to green: integration of sustainability in the
smart city concept”
More and more attention is given to smart city development in Indonesia. The
recent launch of Indonesia’s Smart City Index has amplified the importance of
integrating ICT in making city a better place to live in. Undoubtedly, ICT has
the capability to accelerate urban development toward a sustainable society.
“In the smart city, everything communicates – not just people,” said Andreas
Gyllenhammar who is one of Sweden’s most highly qualified sustainability
consultants, a strategist and business developer at Sweco – a leading Swedish
consulting company in sustainable engineering and design. Gyllenhammar is
also part of the global working group of smart city standards.
He will speak about how urban infrastructure projects, both existing and
planned, can be optimized with ICT. New technologies that can play a
significant role in making our cities greener, for example by enabling a
more effective and efficient energy use in transport, building and lighting.

Topic Speech by Matts-Åke Belin - Traffic Safety Strategist, Swedish
Transport Administration (Trafikverket)
“Vision Zero” - saving lives and reducing deaths with sustainable and
safe transportation policies”
For transportation leaders, zero is ‘the’ number. Sweden launched the Vision
Zero initiative in 1997 and since then the number of traffic fatalities in Sweden
is down from 7 to fewer than 3 per 100,000 people.
Matts-Åke Belin has been one of the key architects of this initiative and is
currently responsible for the development of the Vision Zero Academy –
a new international platform for safety innovations. Outside Sweden, Vision
Zero has been adopted several cities in the USA, incl. New York City, and
currently discussions are ongoing to implement it in India.
Why the roundabouts are better than intersections? How to build roads and
infrastructure that meet capacity and environmental challenges without
compromising traffic safety? Which one is more important, engineering or
enforcement? In his speech, Belin will share with us his viewpoints.
