Grieving over his divorce,
Theodore finds the perfect lover
in Samantha, who shows him
unflagging attention, intuiting his every feeling and need.
The only problem is Samantha isn’t human. She’s a computer
operating-system of advanced artificial intelligence, capable of
feelings, consciousness, and personal growth. Some computerscientists predict that within forty years, computers in fact
will surpass human intelligence. The film raises such questions
as: Do consciousness, feelings and love necessarily require a
corporeal body? Can one love a mind alone? Would loving an
artificial mind be necessarily delusional or perverse?

father. Their infertility brings
crisis and conflict to the
family and painful choices
are presented. What is love and what is fear? Duty and loyalty and

Terry Gilliam of Monty Python
directs this dreamlike “comedy”
based on the archetypal story
of the Holy Grail, with awardwinning performances from
Robin Williams, Jeff Bridges, Mercedes Ruehl, and Amanda
Plummer. A radio “shock jock” crosses paths with the man whose
life he inadvertently shatters, then redeems himself in this film about
violent trauma, severe mental illness, healing, and love. Discussion
will explore the dynamics of narcissism, psychosis, and reenactment
as defensive and healing processes vs. addiction, further violence,
or suicide. Dr. Gold chose this film to honor Williams, who tragically
succumbed to mental illness and suicide this past year.
LEARNING OBJECTIVES:
Discuss the psychological dynamics of narcissism, addiction, psychotic delusion,
and catatonia as defenses against murder or suicide.
Identify the dreamlike transformations that create a delusional system in response
to massive psychological trauma. As such, the participant will discuss how Gilliam
creates in Perry’s hallucinations and delusions a literal “knight mare.”
Integrate the roles of bipolar disorder, insecure attachment, narcissistic personality
structure, addiction and psychological trauma as factors that lead to adaptation
or tragedy in a famous and successful performing artist, both in the character of
Jack in the film, and Robin Williams in his actual life.

from New York, attempting
to create a new life for herself
on the West Coast, using
tattered dreams, fantasies
and illusions from the past to
weave an uncertain future.
LEARNING OBJECTIVES:
Identify defense mechanisms Jasmine uses to indicate what affects this character
is warding off.
Describe examples of “turning passive to active” and describe what you think
these actions might have been defending against.
Contrast Jasmine’s defense mechanisms with the defenses and affects that her
sister demonstrates.
Seen through the lens of psychoanalysis, The Leon Levin Film Series provides insight into human psychology. Films are chosen which are
psychologically perceptive and stir the emotions and curiosity of the viewers. CEs and CMEs are available for mental health professionals.
